GENERAL NEWS
NEW TRAFFIC PATTERN - ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL
As promised, CMIT South MS/HS will be testing out three drop off and pick up lanes instead of two starting on Monday 09/24/2018. The goal is to hasten the drop off and pick processes while reducing the number of vehicles lined up on Fallard Court and Fallard Drive. With this new traffic patterns (attached), all lanes will be through in the morning during drop off. During pickup in the afternoon, two lanes will be through while the middle lane will be an express lane. There will be cones placed to help outline the lanes. Traffic on both outside lanes can via into the express lane once student is picked up. Students are able to enter their rides on both sides of the lot. In addition, Chesapeake Lighthouse Foundation has secured an officer to help with dismissal. Please help make this process a success by observing the following: -- Do not arrive at the school way ahead of time, arrive at school close to dismissal time. This removes the accumulation of traffic for extended periods of time and the inconveniences to our business neighbors. -- While in line waiting to get into the lot pull as far over to the right as you can so the people who work or are making deliveries in this area can still get by. We are sharing the roads with them and attempting to get everyone where they need to go. -- Pull all the way up in lane as you wait for your child, this allows more vehicles off the street. -- Do not block the road in front of the school or businesses, both while trying to get into the parking lot or by parking in the fire lane out front. This makes it harder for everyone to drive respectfully. Leave room for vehicles to get by or into the various parking lots. -- The transport vans/buses are parking in the alley behind the school and they should be the only ones back there. If you child rides a transport bus have them proceed to the vans/buses as soon as they are able. Students should not be boarding Vans/buses on the street. -- Advise all scholars to remain on CMIT South MS/HS property, do not encourage students to walk off the property. CMIT South MS/HS has no jurisdiction beyond its property cannot monitor students beyond the property. -- Appreciate the efforts of those who are volunteering to help by being respectful and following the traffic pattern.

CULTUREFEST! Nov. 3rd from 10AM-4PM!
Mark Sutherland here with Chesapeake Lighthouse Foundation. I know when we last met, we discussed your company's excitement about our six public schools growing to serve 3,300 STEAM students & 5K parents across MD. We do need involvement from our business leaders, families, staff & students. Here at CLF, the spirit of volunteerism and philanthropy is being nurtured because of how it connects to all other areas of business and community. Directly, the biggest mistake we can make is for a false perception that our home office or public schools are elitists. I’m writing to you to let you know that we need volunteers & we need philanthropic support routinely. You’ve noticed our schools, our high standards, and how, even though our students come from random lottery assignments, they rise to meet and exceed expectations. This is not by some miracle or secret recipe. It’s by creating a culture within our school community designed to succeed. There is no guarantee. Have you noticed our innovative approaches are beyond classroom academics? Did you know the construction, operations, renewals, & replications of our public STEM/STEAM schools are accomplished here at CLF? To date, we’ve serviced over $70 million in debt as a non-profit to provide this community’s STEAM academies. Now, for MORE students to continue to maximize their individual potential, for CLF to be able to maintain quality, we know as a business leader and citizens in the same community’s we serve that you would understand and empathize with this reality: staying on top is harder than the climb. That’s why we’re doing things a little different for this year’s 6th Annual CLF CultureFEST. Please let me know if you are able to participate (as little as $150) to secure a vendor booth. Perhaps even just a THEME BASKET to donate for our silent auction (hobbies like golf, or a dinner & movie date night, perhaps a new baby gift basket, or your cool company brand/promos, tech gear, collectibles, rare items that help us draw a crowd, etc.)! Perhaps this is the year we put your company name next to ours for co-sponsor naming rights ($10K) to our harvest-style CLF CultureFEST? Please, help us reach our philanthropic goals for STEAM education programs. Our shared business benefits are already compounding. Come further with us; expand your company’s footprint with our education community! Let’s celebrate our cultures & show folks on Nov. 3 from 10am-4pm that you support MD's #1 public STEAM schools by supporting our annual festival! Remember we at CLF, like all our STEAM schools, are all 501c3 not-for-profits. Know when you give, its totally a tax-write off, too. Please, we really do need our community’s support to sustain success. $1, 1 hour to volunteer, 1 fwd to the right company. Our festival is the platform, but I’m really just asking you to have fun with us in the spirit of thankfulness for the same community’s we live, work, and serve. Find all details attached for quickest Q&A are my event team. Mr. Johnson (djohnson@clfmd.org) handles vendors, graphics, and philanthropy and Mr. Bicer (cbicer@clfmd.org) here is on live performances/music and coordinating with school staff/event volunteers. I’m happy to answer any Qs related to these areas or event info in general towards making sure our two companies work closer together in the future. If nothing else, come to our family-friendly festival. What's New with Testing...
On September 21st, all students received their PARCC results. Included within that is a letter from Prince George's County and a guide to understand the scores. Any students that are newly transferred to CMIT South will not receive their scores because the scores were sent to their original school. We will work to get those scores but it will take time for the schools to send them back to the testing office and then to us. In other news, Accuplacer testing will take place Thursday, September 27th, for any 11th graders that have a 2.5 or higher. Students who are already enrolled in a Dual Enrollment course or are happy with the score that they receive in the Spring do not have to retest. I only need to test those student who are newly qualified or those who would like to improve their score. In the Spring, 10th graders will qualify and then be able to test. Lastly, PSAT testing for 10th and 11th graders will take place on October 10th.

Students have come to me with excitement wanting to do anything and everything with music. This adds to my goal of making sure the music program is progressing at a steady rate. However, they will have to be dedicated. Students must show discipline, dedication and commitment to be part of the program. If you have questions regarding the program, please feel free to contact me via emial (twashington1@cmitsouth.org). I look forward to working with everyone this year and hearing from you soon!

Overview of Graduation Requirements

At the conclusion of my presentation, student support discussed school policies and expectations with the students. Attached below is the presentation that was shared with the high school students. Please know that presentation includes just an overview of graduation requirements. October 6 Hackathon - for Girls Grades 6-12
October 6 - a full day of coding and problem solving through technology at Bowie State University. Open to girls in grades 6-12 interested in Computer Science. Participants can register for one of six workshops which will be held on that day. Lunch is provided. To register contact vlatson@bowiestate.edu HTML/CSS introduction to web design (beginners) Do you know what is hiding behind almost every webpage on the Internet? HTML and CSS are the basic programming languages for web development and design. They can be used for creating websites, blogs or online documents. HTML helps the machine understand the meaning of the data and CSS assists humans in reading and understanding the data being displayed. If you want the power of understanding the real code of the Internet, this is the place to start. It is a doorway to understanding cybersecurity, web development and coding all in one. Javascript for web design (intermediate) Javascript adds interaction, personalization and motion to web pages. If you already understand the basic structure of HTML and CSS it’s time to take the next step and put some pizzazz into your pages with Javascript. It has become a such a mainstream web development skill that it is difficult to get a job as a web developer without JavaScript skills. Add a powerful tool to your toolkit. Thunakable app development (beginners) Thunkable enables anyone to create beautiful and powerful mobile apps. Build your own apps by dragging and dropping your favorite components and connecting them together with blocks to make a real app quickly and easily. Focus on design, color and style. Every app project you create works on both Android and iOS devices. It's pretty magical. Lego Mindstorm Robots (beginners and intermediate) People power is wonderful, but sometimes part of a problem can be solved by putting a machine to work for you. Discover the codes that control motion and actions in a popular robot and design missions for your automated accessory. Think about all of the ways that automation can be used to help with everyday problems like mail delivery, drone surveillance, emergency rescue operations, outer space exploration and even human companions. Every robot has a mission. What will yours be? Art with Python (intermediate) Python is a great programming language for beginners and experts alike. It’s a star in the world of big data, artificial intelligence and machine learning as well as ordinary games and programs. Using turtle graphics, you can easily experiment with this powerful programming language to create designs and patterns. BlocksCAD3d (beginners) The three-dimensional world is connected to computing in many exciting ways. This block-based tool allows you to create a forest of trees, where each one is unique, or a magical spiral staircase with just a few lines of code. Build complicated designs using basic components and watch your design grow to become a pair of earrings, a house, or an entire army of original robots designed to your specifications. Spend less time getting started, and more time designing. Bring your ideas to life in the world of computer aided design with code.
