HAPPY THANKSGIVING
|
As we reflect on the many things for which we are thankful, CMIT South MS/HS wants to take this opportunity to share just a few of them with you: We are thankful for our students who come to school every day ready to learn – they give us all a daily reminder of what is important and why we are here. We are thankful for the support of the parents in creating an outstanding partnership for our students. We are thankful for the teachers, assistants, nurse, secretaries, lunchroom staff, support staff, and administrators who really care about student achievement and have the best interests of our students at heart. We are also thankful for our volunteers who enthusiastically contribute so much to our school.
Everyday, we see dedicated and tireless individuals going above and beyond to make sure that great things happen in our school. They do make a difference, and the children, in their own individual ways, benefit from those efforts.
Most importantly, we are thankful for the parents that have kept the faith in us. They continue to share their most valuable possession with us and—in most cases— work hard and advocate to be a partner in their children’s education, safety and well-being. For this, we are ever so thankful.
From CMIT South family to yours, Have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!

Environmental Science Students have Worms
|
Juniors in Environmental Science welcomed ~4200 new members to our class this week. We keep them in a bin on the bookcase and feed them garbage!
Our compost worms are members of two species: red wigglers (Eisenia fetida) and European nightcrawlers (Eisenia hortensis). Both types eat nearly half their own bodyweight each day in plant material and turn it into rich organic soil. They'll chew through anything from pizza boxes to fruits and vegetables.
Eventually our class will use the worm farm to discuss a wide variety of topics: agriculture, soils, nutrient cycles, waste disposal, ecosystem services, population ecology, community ecology, and more. For now we're focusing on counting and measuring individual worms to explore how their population and demographics change over the course of the next few months.
Students also got to adopt and name their own worm and write a short story about how their worm affects the environment.
Some classmates were a little squeamish at first, but almost everybody eventually came around to their new role as worm ranchers!
Students are welcome to drop off small amounts of plant waste with Mr. Davidson to help feed our colony.
Environmentally,
Brian Davidson

WE WANT YOUR PICTURES FOR THE MIDDLE SCHOOL YEARBOOK!
|
Get your pictures in this year's middle school yearbook!
We would like to invite all parents, guardians, family members, and students to submit photos for this year's middle school yearbook. If you have great photos of middle school events or of you and your friends just having fun, we would like to see them! Our photographers can't be everywhere this year, so help us get as many photos as possible to create a terrific book everyone will want to have. The more pictures we have, the better chance of seeing yourself and your friends in the yearbook! We want photos of sporting events, school events (Hispanic Heritage, Talent Show, school dances, Black History Celebration, etc.), and casual group photos too (you can keep the selfies though!).
We have two ways to submit photos this year and they can be submitted from now until the end of April, so upload after each event you attend throughout the year. See below for instructions on how to use either site.
Option 1: ReplayIt Site
On this site, you can upload any school-related photos off your phone or Facebook to a school-wide photo sharing site. This allows any member of the school community to see pictures of all the things happening at school this year. Directions for setting up a ReplayIt account are attached below.
Option 2: Private Upload
If you'd rather not share your photos to the entire school community site, you can upload them strictly for yearbook use.
Here is how you can submit photos privately:
• Go to: https://images.memoryebooks.com/login
• If it does not automatically log you into the site, enter username: 411443695
• Browse to select the photo(s) you wish to upload.
• Enter information about the photo and provide contact information in case the staff needs additional information.
• Click "Save Details".
It's that easy..submit your photos today! Remember, the last day to submit photos is April 22nd, but don't wait...do it today and keep submitting as the year goes!!
**(We will review all photos and determine final yearbook content. We cannot guarantee that all submissions can be used in the book.)

Mr. Wassam's Biology and Physics Updates
|
Hello CMIT-South families!
I hope everyone is having a great week and ready for a well deserved Thanksgiving. I just want to provide everyone with an update on what is going on and upcoming in my science classes.
Biology:
- We are still learning about cells! Cells! Cells!
- Students should begin working on a project within the next few days about cells. All information will be posted on Edmodo - and this will count as an assessment!
- Following this project, we will review cells and have a unit test on cells
- The next unit test will be after Thanksgiving break and topics will include: types of cells (compare and contrast), parts of cells (identifying and matching), functions of organelles (explain importance of the parts), identifying cells (with microscopes or other images)
- After cells, the next unit will focus on cell processes: photosynthesis and respiration
Physics:
- We just finished our last unit on constant acceleration, vectors, and projectile motion
- We are beginning our unit on Newton's Laws, applying his laws, how Newton's Laws affect motion, and rotational motion (gravity and space)
- Students will have extra practice over Thanksgiving break but it will not be mandatory (but is highly recommended)
- The next Physics unit test will be after Thanksgiving break and topics will include: Newton's Laws and their applications, and using the concepts and math to solve novel problems about motion
- The next unit will include: work, power and energy and collisions
As always if you have any questions feel free to email me at nwassam@cmitsouth.org!
