Principal's Corner
|
Happy Friday CMIT South! We have made it through another week of teaching and learning and we are glad about it. As we continue to manifest our schools mission, we are excited to announce some upcoming opportunities for both you and your scholars. We also need your help! There are a few reminders that we need to communicate to ensure everyone is on the same page regarding CMIT South policies and procedures:
Parent Teacher Conference:
October 11, 2021 is our Virtual Parent-Teacher Conference Day. Teachers are scheduling virtual conferences beginning at 7:45 with the last slot starting at 2:45pm. Please take a moment to sign up for a slot to meet your scholar's teacher via the links below. Please note that there are two spreadsheets - middle school and high school. Slots are 15 minutes a piece, allowing for a quick conversation on student progress. If you believe you might need more than 15 minutes to meet with a teacher, please schedule a meeting for another date. Once you sign up, a zoom link will be emailed to you.
Middle School Sign Up Sheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1tY2nDktyXIfPAwdVCLVY8zX1PnFgOxrOfruee3sSSkA/edit?usp=sharing
High School Sign Up Sheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1PAPr_2hL8BCdMLvKBrPjpHIYnUVvv6WWNOZOx00KG1o/edit?usp=sharing
Quarantine Instructional Plan:
Students who are required to quarantined will access to their work via Canvas. Teachers will provide weekly office hour Check-ins during our Zero Period (7:45-820) based on the identified schedule. Please find the complete CMIT South Quarantine Instructional Plan linked below: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1v6xxkYS7vn0LlzxAy06aZ23Cb9ZVptxA/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=105095217016794802662&rtpof=true&sd=true
Reverse Evacuation Drill:
This morning we conducted a reverse evacuation drill. A reverse evacuation is needed when students are outside of the building and there is a threat present. The goal is to get students back into the building as quickly sand safely as possible. Per usual, our students did an amazing job! Moving forward, if you arrive to drop your students off and we are in the middle of the drill (inclusive of the siren) please hold your scholars inside your vehicle until the siren ends. This drill should last no more than 3 minutes.
Dismissal Procedures:
We understand and share in the frustration with the traffic flow during dismissal. As those on the frontline, we want dismissal to occur as safely and efficiently as possible. A large part falls on our parent community. Please be kind and compliant to the staff members and volunteers directing traffic. Please refrain from parking in the alley exiting the property. It is causing too close of contact with students and moving cars. There are “No Parking” signs present. Please do not park on Fallard Drive and instruct your scholars to meet you down the street. That is also aiding in the traffic build up and students crossing the streets unsafely. There are “No Parking” signs present. Violators will be ticketed. We are continuously working for greater partnership and consistency with law enforcement to help the flow of traffic. Thank you in advance for your patience and compliance with our dismissal procedures.
Uniform Policy:
Please have conversations with your scholars regarding the CMIT Uniform policy. Teachers will conduct dress code checks every morning during 1st period. Common infractions include inappropriate shoes, non-solid black gym bottoms, non CMIT hoodies and jackets. Students will be given an opportunity to immediately correct the violation. Students who are out of compliance should receive the following consequence:
o Infraction 1: Point Deduction
o Infraction 2: Point Deduction and Phone Call Home
o Infraction 3+: Point Deduction and Email to Grade Level Administrator (Parent Conference, Loss of Privileges, Detention, ISS...)
Cell Phone Policy:
Please have conversations with your scholars regarding the CMIT South cellphone policy. Cell phones should be completely turned off AND out of site throughout the school day. This is inclusive of lunch. Students who violate the cell phone policy will receive the following consequence:
o Infraction 1: SIS Point Deductions
o Infraction 2: SIS Point Deduction and Phone Call Home
o Infraction 3+: Point Deduction and Email to Grade Level Administrator (Parent Conference, Loss of Privileges, Detention, ISS...)
Dress Down Day(s):
Our first school wide dress down day will take place on Wednesday, October 13, 2021. This is for students who have zero dress code violations between 10/6-10/13. Sports teams are allowed to dress down the day after a win. More opportunities will be announced soon!

NEWMAN'S RELA REMINDERS: WEEK OF 10/4/21
|
Dear Parents & Students of 83 Princeton & 84 Johns Hopkins:
Welcome back to CMIT South!
I am excited about the new school year, and we have started off great in our Reading, English, Language Arts (RELA) class. Most of our assignments are on Canvas. However, we also utilize other sites such as Flocabulary.com, IXL.com, and NewsEla.com. These assignments also will be listed on Canvas, so students are aware of what they need to make up if they are absent.
As a reminder, when students are absent, they have the number of days they were gone to make up the work once they return to school. After they complete their assignments, they need to send me an email, so I can update their grades in SchoolMax. My email address is: hnewman@cmitsouth.org
Please review the attached Middle School Book of the Quarter list for the 21-22 schoolyear. The Quarter 1 Book: A Mango Shaped Space by Wendy Mass was due September 30, 2021. Students will start reading the book and will complete reading logs for Independent Practice (homework), next week. All reading logs will be posted on Canvas by Monday of each week and will be due on Friday of the same week. Students will earn a completion grade for a maximum of 100 points for this assignment. Please let me know if you have further questions.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
ALL CELL PHONES MUST REMAIN OFF AND IN THE STUDENT'S BOOKBAG DURING THE ENTIRE DAY.
Best,
Mrs. Hakisha Newman, M.Ed., M.A.

FREE AND REDUCED-PRICE MEAL APPLICATIONS DUE OCTOBER 31ST
|
IMPORTANT Food and Nutrition Services Updates
Free and Reduced-Price Meals applications due Oct. 31.
School meals are free for all Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) students this school year, but families still need to submit the Free and Reduced-Price Meals (FARMS) application to remain eligible.
FARMS responses determine most of the school system’s annual funding, which helps to cover staff and school resources. A 1 percent change in responses can put as much as $4 million in annual revenue at risk.
Help PGCPS continue to receive funding for free meals and student services by completing the FARMS application no later than Sunday, October 31.
Please use the link below to complete the application. Paper applications are also available in the front office.
