REGISTRATION FOR MAKERFEST IS OPEN!
|
Held on the first Saturday in May, this will be the 3rd Annual MakerFEST, CLF's yearly STEAM Festival celebrating our community's inner genius! CLF schools are now eight programs and six institutions across the State of Maryland serving over 3,200 students K-12! MakerFEST invites these students to participate with staff, parents and our wider CLF STEM community partners to feel encouraged to exhibit and enjoy all the day's inventions, artwork, personal projects, experiments, robots, wild creations, noble attempts, fine solutions to typical problems, and makers making so much more!
CLF will also have volunteer opportunities available for anyone who wants to help build the best MakerFEST ever!
To register for an exhibition space visit
https://www.clfadvancedstudies.org/makerfest
For volunteer opportunities visit
https://goo.gl/forms/y1qs5zfo8OPOuRo92
This year, the first Saturday in May happens to coincide with May 4th, often celebrated by fans of the widely popular Star Wars franchise.
We fundamentally feel obligated since astronomy, space exploration fit all too well into the MakerFEST concept, so Community Partnerships is also encouraging all exhibitors to share their project progress with @CLF_CLF on twitter or @ChesapeakeLighthouseFoundation on Facebook with the hashtag #MayTheFourthBuildWithYou.
Until next update, May The Fourth Be With You!

DANGEROUS APP: MOMO CHALLENGE - PLEASE READ
|
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Prince George’s County Public Schools is committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for all students. To this end, we want to make you aware of a potentially dangerous internet trend targeting young children called the “Momo challenge.”
When using Whatsapp and YouTube and some other online resources, a scary avatar named Momo interrupts videos and challenges children to complete a series of bizarre and potentially dangerous tasks and upload evidence they were completed. On the final day of the challenge, children are encouraged to win the game by committing suicide. Children are threatened throughout the challenge with harm or sharing their personal information online if they do not complete the tasks.
We are partnering with families to raise awareness of this online threat. Please discuss the challenge with your child and use online safety practices that include not accepting invitations from strangers or taking part in anonymous challenges. We encourage you to allow electronic device usage in shared family spaces. Please monitor your child’s social media accounts and online activities, and install parental controls and filters.
Please see the attachment for additional information regarding this App.
Thank you for your continued support of CMIT SOUTH MS/HS

Character Development
|
Session Goal:
The entire 6th & 7th grade classes of Character Education, are being empowered with the knowledge of awareness of the various techniques employed by advertisers to manipulate consumer behavior and how to resist the techniques.
Major Objectives:
* Discuss the purpose of advertising
* Identify common advertising techniques
* Identify and analyze various advertisements (alcohol)
* Discuss alternative ways of responding to various ads
Vocabulary:
* Consumer
* Manipulate
* Deceptive
* Target-Market
* Lure
Points to Make:
* Advertisements may take several different forms. The most common forms are TV commercials, radio commercials, magazine ads, newspaper ads, and billboards.
Advertising Techniques:
* Celebrity Endorsement- Has a famous or well-known people (for example, movie stars or athletes) talk about how great the product is or even that they use it themselves. Creates the impression that the product must be good if they use it, and if you want to be like them you should use it too.
* Voice of Authority:
Has experts or authorities such as doctors or scientists (or actors playing the part of experts) talk about the effectiveness of products such as toothpaste or pain medicines. Since they are experts, advertisers count on the fact that consumers are likely to believe what they say about how well the products works.
* Scientific Evidence:
Presents facts and statistics from surveys supporting the effectiveness of particular products. This is often combined with the Voice Of Authority technique in an effect to make the ad even more convincing.
Comparisons Test and Opinion Polls:
Presents the results of consumers opinions polls or 'taste tests' involving direct comparisons of similar (competing) products. These ads are intended to show that more people like brand A than brand B or that product X is stronger, safer, less expensive, etc than other similar products.
Demonstrations: Intended to show how well a product works (usually under the most favorable conditions possible). Some of these demonstrations have been found to be rigged by advertisers to make the product look much better than it really is. Frequently used for household products (such as dishwashing soap, window cleaner, floor cleaners, stain-removers, dishwashers, vacuum cleaners, glue, etc.).
Bandwagon Appeal:
Intended to create the impression that everybody is using a particular product and because everybody is using it you should too.
Romance:
Users very attractive models in a way that implies that using the product will make the person using it more romantically or sexually attractive.
Maturity/Sophistication Appeal:
Intended to show that if you buy a certain product you will be more grown-up, sophisticated, and fashionable.
Fun/Relaxation Appeal:
Intended to sell a product by convincing you that it will help you to have more fun or feel more relaxed.
Popularity Appeal: Intended to convince you to buy a certain product by implying that if you use it you will be more popular.
* The Deal Appeal:
Tries to create a sense of urgency and excitement by implying that this is a deal that is too good to pass up. Generally focuses on price and creates a sense of urgency by saying that the deal will end soon because the sale price is only good for a few days and/or there is only a limited supply of the product.
Summary:
* The purpose of advertising is to sell the product.
*Many advertisers do not merely present the facts but frequently exaggerate the claims of their products in order to persuade people to buy them.
* TV and radio commercials, billboards, magazines, and newspaper ads are common forms of advertising.
* Many advertisers re o effective in manipulating us that often they make us want their products without our being aware of the fact that they have persuaded us.
* There are alternative ways of responding to various ads (for cigarettes and alcoholic beverages) such as keeping in mind that advertisers are trying to manipulate individuals by creating the impression that smoking or drinking will somehow improve their lives.
* In this lesson students have learned how to analyze advertisements, to identify common ad techniques, and to resist advertising pressure.

WE WANT YOUR PICTURES FOR THE MIDDLE SCHOOL YEARBOOK!
|
Get your pictures in this year's middle school yearbook!
We would like to invite all parents, guardians, family members, and students to submit photos for this year's middle school yearbook. If you have great photos of middle school events or of you and your friends just having fun, we would like to see them! Our photographers can't be everywhere this year, so help us get as many photos as possible to create a terrific book everyone will want to have. The more pictures we have, the better chance of seeing yourself and your friends in the yearbook! We want photos of sporting events, school events (Hispanic Heritage, Talent Show, school dances, Black History Celebration, etc.), and casual group photos too (you can keep the selfies though!).
We have two ways to submit photos this year and they can be submitted from now until the end of April, so upload after each event you attend throughout the year. See below and the attachments for instructions on how to use either site.
Option 1: ReplayIt Site
On this site, you can upload any school-related photos off your phone or Facebook to a school-wide photo sharing site. This allows any member of the school community to see pictures of all the things happening at school this year. Directions for setting up a ReplayIt account are attached below.
Option 2: Private Upload
If you'd rather not share your photos to the entire school community site, you can upload them strictly for yearbook use.
Here is how you can submit photos privately:
• Go to: https://images.memoryebooks.com/login
• If it does not automatically log you into the site, enter username: 411443695
• Browse to select the photo(s) you wish to upload.
• Enter information about the photo and provide contact information in case the staff needs additional information.
• Click "Save Details".
It's that easy..submit your photos today! Remember, the last day to submit photos is April 22nd, but don't wait...do it today and keep submitting as the year goes!!
**(We will review all photos and determine final yearbook content. We cannot guarantee that all submissions can be used in the book.)
