GENERAL NEWS
PGCPS Scholar of the Week: CMIT South HS's Kennedy Watkins
When CMIT South junior Kennedy Watkins was born, doctors predicted there would be major physical and cognitive limitations on his life. A Brachial Plexus Palsy diagnosis meant his mobility would be restricted. It was also predicted he may never function mentally beyond six years old. The doctors were wrong. Since his diagnosis and nine surgeries later, Kennedy has accomplished things once thought impossible— like rising as a dynamic power forward on his school’s basketball team, despite not being able to use his right arm and maintaining a 3.1 GPA in his rigorous STEM-focused high school program. Making these accomplishments even more sweet, Kennedy recently played an integral role in helping CMIT South make history twice in one week by earning the school’s first boys basketball playoff win then bringing home the Willard Division County championship, a first in school history. The high school basketball program at CMIT South is just three years old. “From birth, Kennedy has met milestones and exceeded everything they told us he couldn’t do,” said mom Angela Kennedy-Watkins, who notes that her son has been athletic and competitive from a young age despite having to overcome balance issues. CMIT South Varsity Basketball Coach and Art Department Chair Reynaldo Quinn has known Kennedy since middle school as his art teacher before recently taking on the role as coach. Quinn says Kennedy’s effort is unmatched both in the classroom and on the court. He credits the student as one reason he decided to coach the team. “Kennedy is a true warrior. He plays at a high level with one arm and is a superstar despite his condition,” Quinn said. “He never complains and has a work ethic and maturity level better than any junior in this school. People are in awe when they see him play, even at away games. He is inspiring.” Kennedy plans to pursue a career in sports management at Temple University, University of Maryland, University of Cincinnati or Xavier University.

CMIT-South Men of Distinction's (MOD) "Entrepreneur Walk and Professional Image Consulting" was a Success!
In the beginning of this year, the mentors and parents of CMIT-South's Men of Distinction Leadership Program (MOD) discussed the professionalism and business savvy of our participating young men. The fruits of that collaboration birthed our first event of the 2019 year: The MOD's Entrepreneur Walk and Professional Image Consulting session. Our Entrepreneurs/Special guests at the event were the following: Havin Baucom, II - Image/Wardrobe Consultant and White House Liaison (www.havinbau.com) Michael Turman - Mentoring Assistant Bobby Hand, Jr. - Skin Care and Cosmetics Consultant and Owner of BrookieGirl Bath & Body Care (www.BrookieGirl.com) Tavares Martin - Owner of SMSW Fitness (www.smswfitness.com) Mr. Roorda - Our very own CMIT-South Educator that also owns a DJ Business (Chris Roorda Disc Jockeys) In honor of Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday and legacy, the students started off the event by watching his 1967 speech at Glenville High School, "What is Your Life's Blueprint?" Next, Mr. Baucom gave the students an image consulting session on both wardrobe etiquette and professional appearance. Lastly, after eating a delicious brunch, our panel of entrepreneurs spoke words of wisdom and encouragement into our young men about having the courage to pave their own way. The event was a huge success and thanks to the CMIT-South PTO, our mentoring panel, Mr. C. Miller, Mr. Tucker, and all other participating members and staff for your continued support. Stay-tuned for more information on our next exciting event taking place on March 11, 2019 where the young men will attend a Congressional voting session at The Capital.

DANGEROUS APP: MOMO CHALLENGE - PLEASE READ
Dear Parents and Guardians, Prince George’s County Public Schools is committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for all students. To this end, we want to make you aware of a potentially dangerous internet trend targeting young children called the “Momo challenge.” When using Whatsapp and YouTube and some other online resources, a scary avatar named Momo interrupts videos and challenges children to complete a series of bizarre and potentially dangerous tasks and upload evidence they were completed. On the final day of the challenge, children are encouraged to win the game by committing suicide. Children are threatened throughout the challenge with harm or sharing their personal information online if they do not complete the tasks. We are partnering with families to raise awareness of this online threat. Please discuss the challenge with your child and use online safety practices that include not accepting invitations from strangers or taking part in anonymous challenges. We encourage you to allow electronic device usage in shared family spaces. Please monitor your child’s social media accounts and online activities, and install parental controls and filters. Please see the attachment for additional information regarding this App. Thank you for your continued support of CMIT SOUTH MS/HS
