Nicotine Free Week- February 23-29
Nicotine Free Week is February 23 -29, 2020. This week was established to rally children and teens across the county against smoking and vaping. Every year, thousands of young people participate in school and community group anti-nicotine and anti-tobacco activities. Nicotine Free Week, formerly Tobacco-Free Kids (TFK) Week, is the county’s premier smoking and vaping prevention event for youth. Nicotine Free Week is a Learn To Live healthy lifestyle program from the Anne Arundel County Department of Health. If you are visiting the school be sure to check out the displays on vaping and smoking. There are many hand-outs/brochures available. The Nicotine Free Week Poster Design Contest is seeking artwork that educates peers about electronic smoking devices or the Maryland and federal Tobacco 21 laws. Each individual with a design submitted to the Anne Arundel County Department of Health will receive a Nicotine Free Week certificate, and all submissions will be displayed on the Nicotine Free Week website. The health room has information on judging criteria and contest rules. Prizes for the top winner in Middle and High school is an Apple AirPod. Check out the Nicotine Free Week webpage at www.NicotineFreeWeek.org. A high school student from CSP won last year. Let's do it again!

It's Report Card Time! - Monday, February 10
Your child will receive his/her report card on Monday, February 10. Please take a moment to review the report with your child to celebrate successes and to have a conversation about future goals. If your child struggled this quarter/semester and earned poor grades, the Children's National Heath System offers the following suggestions: 1. Determine whether this is unusual or showing a trend. If you are seeing a trend, it may be important to consider seeking an expert evaluation on your child’s school performance to determine if there are any emotional, behavioral, or learning concerns that might be affecting your child’s functioning in school. Any of those issues can be addressed if the problem is identified. 2. Calmly ask your child to describe his/her thoughts about the report card. Ask how your child feels about it. Ask your child why he/she thinks he/she got each of the grades. 3. Ask your child’s opinion on what to do next. Remind your child that this is a great learning opportunity to figure out how to help him/her in the future. Come up with solutions together and let him/her know you are there to help. Maybe he/she would like more support with homework, a tutor or help with organizational skills. 4. Remember that the school and your child’s teachers should be part of the team to help promote success. If you need to set up a meeting, make sure you come prepared with your goals and make sure you include your child in setting those goals. If you help the teachers understand your and your child’s goals, they can help you get there. Above all, the most important thing is to remind your child that you are on his/her team to help. Providing support is valuable in helping your child be more motivated. Remember that PowerSchool is a great tool to monitor your child's grades throughout the quarter as well.

Repeat-Free School
Hi CSP Parents, Please see below regarding details on Chesapeake Science Point's NO REPEAT policy. If you have questions and/or concerns regarding this matter, please reach out to your child's school counselor. CSP continues to provide a rigorous and quality education to all students. It has always been our goal to improve upon past practices, find new ways to engage students and make learning something students enjoy. We also believe that high school students need to put forth that same effort in order to become successful adults; therefore, CSP is Repeat Free. If a student receives an E in a required high school course, the class will have to be repeated in an alternate program such as summer school, evening school and twilight school. These programs are available for students to make up credits in courses that they were not successful in the first time; classes at CSP are for students taking them for original credit. If a student does not make up the failed class in one of these alternative programs, there is a chance that we will not be able to schedule the student for the classes required for graduation and the student will have to take classes at CSP for more than four years.

Summer Engineering Program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Are you interested in Engineering? If so, you may be interested in the 2020 PREFACE Program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute! PREFACE is a two-week residential summer program for talented students (who will enter 11th or 12th grade in the Fall of 2020) who have been historically under-served in the areas of science, engineering and the technological fields, and who express a strong, early interest in pursuing careers in these areas. This year’s program will take place Sunday, June 28 through Saturday, July 11 on the Rensselaer campus in Troy, NY. Details: The 2020 program will focus on engineering solutions to create a more sustainable environment. In partnership with Rensselaer, the Troy School District (TSD) Community Greenhouse was initially established to introduce sustainability through agriculture; it has in addition become an important, ongoing site for senior capstone projects in Rensselaer’s Multidisciplinary Design Laboratory (MDL). Four separate capstone teams have proposed possible solutions to a variety of challenges including the harsh northeast climate and limited water and power sources that diminish the effective greenhouse growing season. Working in teams, the 2020 PREFACE students will be tasked to complete their own capstone projects, modelled on the format required of senior Rensselaer engineering students. They will be introduced to greenhouse and the challenges facing it, review the prior capstone proposals, and work with the TSD greenhouse coordinator and the engineering project manager to design, manufacture and test their own prototype solutions to increase the greenhouse growing season and productivity. In addition to the greenhouse engineering design capstone project, students will attend classes in electronics, manufacturing and CAD, and will visit Rensselaer’s engineering departments and learn from faculty members about pursuing a degree, research opportunities, and possible careers in academia and industry in each engineering discipline. Requirements: The PREFACE Program is for students who will be in either the 11th or 12th grade in the fall. Interested candidates should review the information on the PREFACE website and complete the online application. Application Deadline: Completed applications must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. ET on March 27, 2020. Notifications will be made to accepted students in late April. Questions about the program should be directed to preface@rpi.edu.
