CMIT-S Parent Information Night
Allison Brown, a family therapist from the Center for Healthy Families came to speak to CMIT-S parents on Monday evening to share techniques on improving communication with their children. The presentation was interactive, and allowed parents to role-play while trying out these techniques. She discussed the importance of empathy and validating feelings. Reminded parents that you do not always need to ask questions, instead try a "hmm, uh huh, and I see." Allison had parents reflect back to what it was like to be a teenager, the good and the not so good. It was a fun, informative night for everyone who attended. Thank you for coming out!

Student Service Learning Opportunities
Whitemarsh Park, 100 White Marsh Park Dr, Bowie, MD 20715

May 21st, 2016, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

www.cityofbowie.org/weedwarriors

The City of Bowies Green Team is in need of volunteers to help remove English ivy from Whitemarsh Park. As an invasive, non-native plant, English ivy spreads quickly and easily, and is very destructive to native ecosystems. This is an outdoor activity that requires cutting the ivy vines at eye-level and foot-level, then pulling them back about two feet from the base of the tree to bag them. To participate, please register by contacting Kristin Larson (klarson@cityofbowie.org, 301-809-3044). This is a great Student Service Learning opportunity. Children age 14 and younger must be under the direct supervision of a parent/guardian or Troop Leader at all times, and no volunteers under age 16 can use tools but may participate by pulling and bagging vines. Tiffany Wright (Watershed Manager for the City of Bowie) or Kristin Larson (Sustainability Planner for the City of Bowie) will sign off on service learning hours for students at the event.

Social Media Apps
Parents,

I wanted to share with you a handout created by the PGCPS Department of Counseling Services that addresses common apps students are using. It provides you with a brief description of the app and why is can be dangerous for students. I am working on having a presentation to address social media further, but for now, I thought this would be a helpful resource for parents. Also, you can check out commonsensemedia.org and safesmartsocial.com for more information and tips for keeping your students safe online.
