Pi Day is Coming
CMIT South is preparing for our annual Pi day event. Pi day is on 03/14/2016. Pi (Greek letter “”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159. Pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point. Your student will participate in Pi day activities on this day in their math classes. We are in need of Pie donations for this event. Pie can be donated beginning March 9, 2016 during arrival and dismissal times. During arrival times, please bring all Pie donation to the front desk. Pie donations during dismissal and enrichment times should be dropped off in the cafeteria.
Due to department of health regulations, we will not be accepting home made pies.

The City of Bowies Green Team is in need of volunteers to help remove English ivy from Whitemarsh Park. As an invasive, non-native plant, English ivy spreads quickly and easily, and is very destructive to native ecosystems. This is an outdoor activity that requires cutting the ivy vines at eye-level and foot-level, then pulling them back about two feet from the base of the tree to bag them. To participate, please register by contacting Kristin Larson (klarson@cityofbowie.org, 301-809-3044). This is a great Student Service Learning opportunity. Children age 14 and younger must be under the direct supervision of a parent/guardian or Troop Leader at all times, and no volunteers under age 16 can use tools but may participate by pulling and bagging vines. Tiffany Wright (Watershed Manager for the City of Bowie) or Kristin Larson (Sustainability Planner for the City of Bowie) will sign off on service learning hours for students at the event.

ACADEMY NEWS
MSA Science: 8th Grade Testing
Dear Parents,

In the coming weeks, all students in grade eight in the state of Maryland will participate in the Maryland School Assessment Program in Science (MSA Science). The Federal No Child Left Behind Act requires Maryland to test science content at least once in the elementary and once in the middle school grades. The test will be given online. CMIT 8th graders will be testing Tuesday, March 8th and Wednesday March 9th.

The test will include both selected response and constructed response items. This year the online version of the test will include a Technology Enhanced Item. This innovative item will more closely represent the next generation of online assessments.

It is extremely important that your child is in school and on time each day of testing. Make-up testing is required for all students. Students may not be permitted to test if tardy on their assigned testing day.

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO MAKE SURE YOUR STUDENT DOES HIS OR HER BEST JOB. PLEASE…MAKE SURE…

--Your child arrives to school on time.

--Your child eats a substantial breakfast in the morning that will give him/her the necessary energy and alertness for participation in testing.

--Your child gets a good night’s sleep the night before each testing day.

--Your child is in school every testing day. Children absent on a testing day will participate in make-up testing.

You encourage your child to do his/her best!

Thank you for your help. We know our students will do their best!

FIELD TRIPS
The 8th Grade College Trip
The 8th Grade College Trip is being planned for Friday, April 22-Saturday April 23. Departure time is tentatively scheduled for 5 a.m. Friday morning with arrival time back at school at approximately 9 p.m. Saturday evening. Once the trip is approved, permission slips will be sent home.

The cost is expected to be $200-250/participant and that covers transportation, parking, hotel fee, college tour fees, and most of the meals.

Students will visit 3 colleges, potentially UNC, NC State, and Duke. We need many parents to attend.

Since this is planned to be an overnight trip, chaperones must have full fingerprinting/background check by PGCPS. Note that fingerprinting or background checks by other school districts or other security clearances are not accepted by PGCPS. Check out PGCPS website for the cost and location: http://www1.pgcps.org/fingerprinting/

Contact Ms. Warehime if you like to help with planning and coordinating the trip: kwarehime[AT]cmitsouth[DOT]org. Special thanks go to Ms. Warehime, Ms. Futrell, and parent volunteers Ms. Jackson and Ms. Campbell for their efforts to make this trip happen.

Attendance Check
Parents/Guardians:

The following is applicable for EXCUSED absence, tardiness, and early dismissal:

When sending attendance letters, handwritten or via email, ensure you include name of your child, university/college, the date(s) and reason they were not in school, your printed name and signature.

Depending on the circumstance (absent, tardy, early dismissal), a note must be provided upon return of your child to school to avoid being marked as unexcused. If a note is being sent via email, you may send it to:

-----> secretary@cmitsouth.org <-----

If you or your child(ren) will hand deliver a note, you must submit it to the front desk to be photocopied. The copy will be given to your child to show each teacher while the original will be filed for attendance recording purposes.

Also remember to review the PGCPS list of excused and unexcused absences found in the Students Rights and Responsibilities Handbook.

The state of Maryland recognizes the following as lawful (EXCUSED) absences from school:

-Death in the immediate family
-Illness of the student
-Quarantine
-Court summons
-Principal-approved activity
-Mental or physical incapacity
-Violent storms
-Observance of a religious holiday
-State of emergency

FYI: This email address serves as a DROPBOX for attendance recording purposes ONLY, you will not receive a response and must contact your student's teachers directly regarding missed assignments.

CAUTION: Keep Inclement Weather Make-Up Days in Mind When Planning Summer Vacation
Greetings CMIT South Parents/Guardians,

As winter weather has already caused school closings, we here at CMIT South would like to remind you that CMIT follows the PGCPS school year calendar. Parents are encouraged to register text or email alerts for school closings and emergencies by filling out the online form on PGCPS website: https://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/PGCPS/subscriber/new

Students and parents are asked not to schedule any vacations or trips to coincide with school days for the 2015-16 school year. Maryland state law requires that all students between the ages of 5-16 attend school regularly. Absences from and tardies to school is disruptive to the learning process. Studies have shown that students who attend school on a regular basis earn better grades and learn more than those who are frequently absent. Students will also earn incentives for Perfect Attendance.

Please note that June 15-17 & 20, 2016 are assigned as inclement weather make-up days and students may be required to attend school on those days, depending on the weather conditions throughout the Winter. Please do not plan any family vacations until after June 21, 2016.

Parents and students are asked to visit PGCPS website for calendar updates: http://www1.pgcps.org/calendar
