Student Arrival and Dismissal
|
Thank you all for your patience as we have experimented this week, trying to find the safest and quickest way to get you in and out of the school parking lot!!! This year we will use all three lanes during dismissal. This allows us to clear the roads quicker and get more cars into the parking lot. It is imperative that you follow the directions of school staff. PLEASE PULL ALL THE WAY TO TOP BEFORE STOPPING. This allows us to get more cars in the parking lot. It is also important to have conversations with your scholars about being ready when you arrive to keep the traffic moving. When students are not paying attention it slows down the process. One suggestion is to call your scholar as you are entering the school so they are upfront and ready.
Our school building opens for students at 8:20 a.m. In order to ensure your child’s safety, we ask you not to release your child from your car onto school property before 8:00 a.m. (Changed). Releasing students on the property before this time is a safety concern and will be followed up on by an administrator.
Student drivers and van riders will be dismissed at 2:50pm. All other students are dismissed at 2:55pm. The location of CMIT South is not ideal and traffic can be very overwhelming for everyone. Please ensure you are following the direction of the PG County Police Officers and CMIT South Staff. Our goal is always to get your children to you as safely and quickly as possible. If patience is not a strength of yours, we have a few recommendations that will help you to avoid the traffic at dismissal:
Register for our Before/After School Enrichment Program
Hire Private Transportation Services
Wait to pick up your scholar between 3:20-3:30
Afterschool Clubs/Sports (dismiss at 4pm)

Locker Usage
|
Locker distribution will. continue next week. It is highly encouraged that students do not share their locker combinations with any other students. Students will go to their lockers at the start of the day and again at the end of the day. All over coats, cell phones, and book bags are expected to be stored in their lockers during the school day. No bookbags will be allowed inside of the classroom. Students are permitted and encouraged to carry their Chromebooks in a sleeve.

Uniform Policy
|
CMIT South MS/HS is a mandatory uniform school. The complete dress code policy, with pictures, can be found at https://cmitsouth.org/uniform-policy/. All students are expected to wear their complete uniforms to school daily. In addition, students are expected to wear PE uniforms on days they have PE and oxford shirts and ties on days we have Picture Day, assemblies, field trips and any other special events. Last year, students were permitted to wear uniform tops without the school logo. That will NOT be acceptable this school year. This includes jackets, sweaters, hoodies, etc. Shoes MUST be 100% black as well. No Crocs or Yeezy's are allowed.
Students are only allowed to wear spirit shirts/hoodies on identified days. Those are not every day uniform wear. We will notify both students and parents when we have spirit wear day or dress down day.
We will resume our uniform checks and follow-up with our progressive discipline policy on Tuesday, September 6th.

Middle School Matters with Mrs. Green
|
Greetings CMIT-South Families,
We have come to the end of another successful week of teaching and learning! Thank you so much parents for your diligence in supporting your scholars during these first few weeks of school. This was an exciting week of teaching and learning for our scholars as they began engaged in curriculum based lessons. We also held our first Grade Level Town Halls! Students in each grade level were given information on schoolwide rules and norms as well as our incentive program.
Our focus for the month of September is uniform policy compliance. Students who do not acquire any uniform policy infractions for the next 3 weeks (9/12-9/30) will be eligible to participate in the monthly incentive which is (drumroll please) a Dress Down Day!!! Parents can help their scholar achieve this goal by checking in with them before they arrive at school to ensure they are 100% compliant with the uniform policy (including 100% black shoes and the appropriate uniform for PE). The dress down day is scheduled for Tuesday, October 4, 2022. Scholars expressed a great deal of excitement about this incentive. We hope to have 100% of middle school scholars eligible to participate. Town Halls will occur monthly for each grade level, this will be an opportunity to celebrate our scholars achievements in the areas of behavior, attendance, academics, and much more!
We are nearly at 100% distribution for chromebooks. The few remaining scholars will receive their chromebooks on Monday. Please ensure your scholar reports to school daily prepared for instruction including a fully charged chromebook. We have limited capacity for chromebook charging on campus.
CMIT-South staff is super excited to welcome our community to our virtual Back-to-School Night on Tuesday, September 13, 2022 4pm - 6pm. More information including Zoom links to join the event is coming soon.
Say CHEESE! Picture Day for middle school students is September 19, 2022. Students should be in full uniform for picture day including their white button-down oxford shirt and blue or khaki pants.
Well once again it has been a great week thank you for your continued partnership. Have a safe and enjoyable weekend. We look forward to welcoming scholars on Monday!

ATLAS Performing Arts Center Student Service Learning Opportunity!!
|
Scholars!
Here's another Student Service Learning opportunity!:
The Atlas Performing Arts Center’s City at Peace program is a youth development program that uses the performing arts to create a space to safely examine these conditions and advance a social justice curriculum.
Interactive Orientation dates are available for all interested young people ages 14-24 on Monday, September 12 at 5 pm OR Saturday, September 24 at 10 am at the Atlas Performing Arts Center (1333 H St, NE, Washington, DC). Our program meets every Monday and Wednesday beginning Monday, September 26.
City at Peace intentionally brings together a culturally diverse group of young people to examine systems of oppression that marginalize them, like power imbalances, and uses them as a lens for young people to unpack racism, adultism, sexism, classism, heterosexism, and more. The outcome of the program is realistic tools created by young people to interrupt harmful behaviors and negative attitudes. It is also an artistic production about their experiences and ideas for change.
Our young people show positive change and leadership abilities inside their peer and family groups within the first few months of the program. Our alumni are strong advocates for themselves as well as for people with smaller voices and diverse backgrounds. We are very proud of the work that our City at Peace youth do.
This program is FREE and youth will earn a considerable amount of community service hours. Major funding is provided by the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities.
