CMIT is Blooming into Mental Health -May is National Mental Health Awareness Month
May is recognized as National Mental Health Awareness Month!!!! Mental Health is defined as: Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood. Each year millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental illness. During May, several organizations join the national movement to raise awareness about mental health. Each year we fight stigma, provide support, educate the public, and advocate for policies that support people with mental illness and their families. This year, Mental Health Awareness Month will amplify the message, “Together for Mental Health.” According to National Today, observing Mental Health Awareness Month means taking care of yourself, taking care of your loved ones, and talking about mental health. The more you talk about it, the more normal the conversation becomes. This can be a challenge due to the stigma mental health carries, but it is important to offer support and encourage your loved ones, and to seek treatment for yourself. Stigma often exists because of negative stereotypes or myths. For example, some people might believe that treatment does not help. However, mental health conditions such as anxiety are very treatable, but only 36% of people go to get help. Others believe that anxiety just happens, or that it is very uncommon. This, again, is untrue. Anxiety disorder is the most common mental health disorder in the US, and it is caused by several factors such as brain activity to genetics, to life events. So, reach out if you need help, or be there for someone who needs help. If you are in a mental health crisis, there are numerous resources available. Please contact any resource listed below or contact me for further assistance: National Suicide Prevention Lifeline – Call 1-800-273-8255 Veterans Crisis Line – Call 1-800-273-8255, press 1 National Alliance on Mental Illness – Text “NAMI” to 741741 Mental Health America – Text “MHA” to 741741 or call 1-800-273-8255 (Available 24/7) For Spanish speakers, call 1-888-628-9454 For Deaf or hard of hearing, dial 771, then 1-800-273-8255 *Check out our interactive Mental Health Awareness bulletin board in front of the cafeteria created by myself and our students with arts and crafts, positive mental health tips from the students and staff, and resources for various mental health-related topics.*

Government Class Update
Greetings, I am very proud of all my scholars and their dedicated work this year as we embarked on the journey of learning about the American Political System. Now that the MCAP is behind us, we will begin a project based learning model where scholars will be engaging in long-term projects in the classroom with my assistance. The first of these projects is a mock trial that will take us until June 6, 2022 to complete. Scholars should know that during this time the amount of grades entered into schoolmax will be about 2 per week which is different from what we are used to throughout the school year. This means that scholars must be engaged in class, and be sure to follow the guidelines of the project to ensure their grades do not suffer. Grades will be entered in a timely manner, so please be sure to check school max on a regular basis. If there are any questions or concerns please be sure to reach out via email at bodaniel@cmitsouth.org.
