6TH GRADE PARENT CHECK-INS
|
Although we are operating virtually, we manage to find way to continue to engage our families. This week, Principal Adewoye and Assistant Principal Green met with parents of 6th grade students from all 6th grade colleges. This was an opportunity to hear from parents on their experience at CMIT South thus far and what can be done better. Parents shared accolades and suggestions for improvement. Thank you to all parents who came out to share during these meetings. We look forward to your continued partnership.
This week we also had our first PTO meeting of the new school year. Over 90 families were represented virtually. We welcome our new PTO Board Members for SY21. We are still in need of a President and Vice Presidents. Please email pto@cmitsouth.org if you are interested in serving.

English 12 Update
|
Hi English 12 Parents,
I wanted to take this opportunity to touch base with you now that we have reached the interim point of 1st quarter. So far this year in English 12 we have finished our first unit, where the students focused on their personal narratives that can be used for their college applications. Students spent time studying exemplar narratives, conferencing with me and their peers, and revising their writing throughout the writing process. They are currently working on short research projects to build background for our main text of the quarter, the memoir "Born a Crime" by Trevor Noah. This text tells the story of Noah's childhood growing up in South Africa during Apartheid. It does include sensitive topics that could possibly serve as triggers to readers such as violence and foul language, so if that is a concern for you or your child, please contact me. Here is the Amazon.com listing for this book.
I also wanted to take this opportunity to let you know about one of the support systems that I have built into my weekly schedule for your students. Of course, students are always welcome to hang back during the class breaks if they need to speak with me but I also hold a weekly office hour on Wednesdays from 11:00am - 12:00pm. As of right now, it doesn't seem as if I need to add more time as students are not filling up all of the slots, but if that need arises, I will certainly add more times. Additionally, any time we are working on extended essay assignments, I will add additional conference times/dates to the schedule so that students have ample opportunities to receive help with their writing as I did with the personal narratives.
Thank you for all that you are doing to support your students in my English class this year! I know senior year can often be a tough time to stay motivated and this year particularly - so it’s great to know that my students have wonderful support networks at home! Please feel free to email me if you ever have any questions or concerns.
Ms. Hackett
