CMIT South 2020-21 Academic Calendar
|
CMIT South follows PGCPS calendar. Parents are encouraged to register for text or email alerts for school closings and emergencies by filling out the online form on PGCPS website: https://www.pgcps.org/how-to-subscribe-to-alerts/
Students and parents are asked not to schedule any vacations or trips to coincide with school days for the 2020-21 school year. Maryland state law requires that all students between the ages of 5-16 attend school regularly. Absences from and tardies to virtual or hybrid school is disruptive to the learning process. Studies have shown that students who attend school on a regular basis earn better grades and learn more than those who are frequently absent. Students will earn incentives for Perfect Attendance.
Please note that last days for students and teachers are subject to change due to inclement weather make-up days and students may be required to attend school later than indicated. Please do not plan any family vacations until after June 18, 2021.
Parents and students are asked to visit PGCPS website for 2020-21 calendar updates: https://www.pgcps.org/communications/cards/2020-2021-School-Year-Calendar-as-a-Grid/
The state of Maryland recognizes the following as lawful (excused) absences from school:
-Death in the immediate family
-Illness of the student
-Quarantine
-Court summons
-Principal-approved activity
-Mental or physical incapacity
-Violent storms
-Observance of a religious holiday
-State of emergency

Immunizations Still Required During Distance Learning
|
Although PGCPS will offer distance learning for the first semester, students must meet state immunization requirements within 20 calendar days of enrollment (Sept. 21). Immunizations during the pandemic are essential in maintaining overall health, especially during flu season.
Starting next month, PGCPS will host free immunization clinics at multiple school sites to assist families with meeting immunization requirements. These services are offered in collaboration with the Prince George’s County Health Department and the Maryland Partnership for Prevention.
Immunizations will be offered by appointment only in order to adhere to social distancing guidelines; masks will be required. Temperatures will be taken upon arrival. We will also offer dental services and flu shots for your convenience.
Stay tuned for more details on the online registration process, specific dates, times and locations.
For more information, visit the PGCPS Immunization webpage - https://www.pgcps.org/immunizations/.

Your schedule on SchoolMAX
|
Please make sure that you are actually logging in to SchoolMAX to see your schedule and that you are not using a screenshot. To make sure that we maintain balanced classes some schedules and electives have been adjusted over the course of this week. Your schedule in SchoolMAX is what you actually need to follow. We have set your schedule with your specific graduation requirements in mind. You are required to join all of the class sessions that are on your schedule. If you see something in SchoolMAX that is incorrect or you would like to be considered for a schedule change, please make sure you complete the Google form that Ms. Epps sent out for schedule changes. That form is due on Labor Day, so please do not miss that deadline. Next week if you are not on the roster, your teacher will likely not admit you into class, so make sure you are going to the correct classes so you will not be marked absent either.
Lastly, please make sure that if your schedule was updated, you go back and join the correct Edmodo code for your sections. Even if you kept the same teacher, you want to make sure you are in the correct section so the zoom links and assignments are all correct!
Thank you so much for a great first week! Let's stay positive and patient

College Application & Naviance for Senior
|
To our CMIT South HS Seniors,
We are aware that our seniors have begun their college application process and commend you for preparing yourselves so early for this major transition!
A Naviance tutorial will be provided for you before the end of the month. Naviance is the platform you will utilize to request transcripts, recommendation letters, and other pertinent information. Ms. Gabriel, your school counselor, and your teachers will primarily use Naviance to assist you with this process.
Please do not input any teacher/counselor references on Common App or Coalition for recommendation letters. Everything will be done through Naviance!
You may only do so for scholarship applications. Lastly, please ensure that you have kindly asked your teacher or counselor to write you a recommendation letter before you place their name in your application. When you do so, please send your resume, a brief summary about yourself, post secondary plans, and your Braggs sheet (the sheet will be uploaded for your submittal before the end of the month).
Good Luck to all!
Ms.Gabriel

Welcome to Mr. Wassam's Class
|
Hi families!
While I have interacted with students and sent families a welcome letter, I wanted to extend another warm welcome to my new students and their families. Welcome to the new school year, welcome to my new virtual classroom, and welcome to an exciting learning opportunity for us all.
I have shared my Syllabus and new Science Site on Edmodo, and they can be found in my email signature. I am looking forward to a productive year with everyone. I want to reiterate my goals for the year, which I previously shared during class. My goal is that all my students are better when they leave my class at the end of the year in the following: better at science (obviously), better learners, and better humans.
This week, we've set norms, expectations, rules and discussed rewards and consequences. Hopefully they've shared some class information with you all and are eager to begin learning new things in science.
I am here to answer any questions should anything arise! Please send me an email at nwassam@cmitsouth.org. I hope to be a useful resource not just for students but also their families!

9th Grade Student Government
|
Welcome to a new school year CMIT-South families!
If you are a 9th grade student (Class of 2024), or the family member of a 9th grade student then this post is for you! (If not, move along. These aren't the droids you're looking for).
Great! Here is what Student Government is (SGA).
Student Government Association allows students to learn about problems they are faced with in the school setting and create a plan to change these problems. The students will learn about roles and responsibilities of elected members of SGA, and will be allowed to run for office if they so choose. The members of SGA will brainstorm fundraising ideas in order to pay for events such as their prom and graduation later in their academic career. SGA will also participate in subcommittees in which students will focus on specific needs within the school community to implement a positive change.
Anyone who is interested should email me (Mr. Wassam) or Ms. O'Daniel. We will share more information on when we will meet, how to join, and how to run for an elected position. Not all students who join SGA need to run for office, but the Class of 2024 needs a President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary along with others willing to help engage the school community and make it better!
Email nwassam@cmitsouth.org, or bodaniel@cmitsouth.org to let us know you are interested!
Mr. Wassam
