GENERAL NEWS
WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL - VIRTUALLY
Dear CMIT South Families: It is my hope that the family is safe and well. This summer has not been without its challenges. As always, the CMIT South MS/HS staff has risen to and met each challenge. Despite delays, we celebrated our inaugural senior class with a Diploma ceremony on August 7, 2020. It was great to see the senior families once again. It is with pride that I share our graduation rate of 99% with one student not graduating with the class. As we set about preparing for the 2020-21 school year, and in keeping with our mission of attaining educational excellence by providing a rigorous and technology-integrated education for K-12 students with an emphasis on mathematics, science and information technologies, our academic schedule this year focuses on maximizing the instructional time to ensure that scholars benefit most from live virtual lesson during remote and hybrid learnings. Our fall reopening plans details all that may be different and new for this new year. You will find the PGCPS reopening plan on our website – www.cmitsouth.org . As always, I look forward to another productive learning year despite COVID-19. We will keep our focus on the academic and emotional success of all in our school community. I look forward to continuous partnership this school year. Please continue to be well and stay safe.

CMIT South 2020-21 Academic Calendar
CMIT South follows PGCPS calendar. Parents are encouraged to register for text or email alerts for school closings and emergencies by filling out the online form on PGCPS website: https://www.pgcps.org/how-to-subscribe-to-alerts/ Students and parents are asked not to schedule any vacations or trips to coincide with school days for the 2020-21 school year. Maryland state law requires that all students between the ages of 5-16 attend school regularly. Absences from and tardies to virtual or hybrid school is disruptive to the learning process. Studies have shown that students who attend school on a regular basis earn better grades and learn more than those who are frequently absent. Students will earn incentives for Perfect Attendance. Please note that last days for students and teachers are subject to change due to inclement weather make-up days and students may be required to attend school later than indicated. Please do not plan any family vacations until after June 18, 2021. Parents and students are asked to visit PGCPS website for 2020-21 calendar updates: https://www.pgcps.org/communications/cards/2020-2021-School-Year-Calendar-as-a-Grid/ The state of Maryland recognizes the following as lawful (excused) absences from school: -Death in the immediate family -Illness of the student -Quarantine -Court summons -Principal-approved activity -Mental or physical incapacity -Violent storms -Observance of a religious holiday -State of emergency

Immunizations Still Required During Distance Learning
Although PGCPS will offer distance learning for the first semester, students must meet state immunization requirements within 20 calendar days of enrollment (Sept. 21). Immunizations during the pandemic are essential in maintaining overall health, especially during flu season. Starting next month, PGCPS will host free immunization clinics at multiple school sites to assist families with meeting immunization requirements. These services are offered in collaboration with the Prince George’s County Health Department and the Maryland Partnership for Prevention. Immunizations will be offered by appointment only in order to adhere to social distancing guidelines; masks will be required. Temperatures will be taken upon arrival. We will also offer dental services and flu shots for your convenience. Stay tuned for more details on the online registration process, specific dates, times and locations. For more information, visit the PGCPS Immunization webpage - https://www.pgcps.org/immunizations/.

GRADE CHANGE AND APPEAL
The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) issued requirements for local school districts regarding the grade change window for Quarter 3 (Q3) and Quarter 4 (Q4) for the 2019-2020 school year. As a result, Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) has revised our grade appeal window as follows: Parents/students have until January 1, 2021, to complete and submit make-up work for Q3 and Q4 grade changes. Approved Q3 grade changes will change letter grades for elementary and middle and numeric grades for high school. Approved Q4 grade changes will change I (Incomplete) grade to P (Pass). In order to change the 4th quarter grade from an I to a P: 1. A student would need to complete any outstanding make-up work before January 1, 2021. 2. A parent/student would need to submit a Grade Appeal Form along with any completed make-up work. 3. The principal’s team of designees at the school where the grade was recorded would need to review and process the grade change following the grade change process outlined in Administrative Procedure 5116.
