The 2020 CLF BHM Poster & Essay Finalist Have Been Selected!
|
Dear CLF Schools,
We would like to thank all our participants for their Poster and Essay contributions for this year's 2020 Black History Month. Attached, please find the finalists chosen to represent CLF schools at the upcoming Feb. 25th BHM Reception. All those listed here are FINALISTS and there is no "1st, 2nd, or 3rd...etc." as we equate these excellent representations of the contest to the same exceptional "Finalists" that exhibits the precision and quality in either Poster or Essay contributions.
In addition, we will provide a CERTIFICATE OF PARTICIPATION for all student participants, regardless of being chosen among the finalists. The only exception to that will be the few disqualified for suspected plagiarism. We will notify the school individually so as to not cast a shadow on this otherwise STEAMzing content from our CLF school students.
To our leaders, we are so very proud and grateful for the motivation behind the students that truly took this contest to heart and taught us all more about Black History Month with their efforts and finished product.

Food in Biology
|
Yes, here in Biology we like to play with food. In the last couple of weeks students have been completing different labs using food!
First, we started with extracting strawberry DNA. The lab was quick, easy, and probably the first time students have seen DNA outside of a textbook. (Sorry I do not have a picture)
Next, we modeled DNA using candy. Yes, the sugar-phosphate backbone was represented with sugar-based Twizzlers. The bases were represented with the Sour Patch and followed the pairing rules learned in class.
Most recently, we modeled cell division with Oreos. Students worked in groups to show the different stages of Mitosis with Oreos (cells) and sprinkles (DNA).
Hopefully, they shared some of this knowledge with their families, if not - check out some of the work they did (before they ate it).

Yearbooks for Valentine's Day
|
What makes a great Valentine's Day gift?
A High School Yearbook!
This is Our Moment! It is time to begin ordering your 2019-2020 CMIT South High School Yearbook! The yearbook staff is working harder than ever to make sure that this year’s yearbook is truly a representation of all that is CMIT South HS. We can’t wait to share it with you!
The yearbook is already 140 pages long! The class's goal is to have every high school student on at least one page of the yearbook - so far we have an estimated 65% of the students already pictured. Each senior will have a large, half page all to themselves!
Please support the hard work of the Yearbook Class by purchasing a yearbook today!
See the attached purchasing instructions.

|
Terp Scholars enroll in one three-credit course that is at the cutting-edge of theory, thought, and technology. Courses feature field trips or guest speakers designed to broaden understanding of the field through career discovery. Outside of class, students should expect to spend several hours a day on course-related assignments.
Classes meet every day, Monday-Friday, with meeting times varying according to the specific course. Both credit and grade earned post to the UMD transcript and become part of the student record. The course may not be taken pass-fail or audit.
Courses are offered in a broad range of academic disciplines from UMD’s Colleges and Schools. Students should expect to purchase books, class packets, or classroom supplies. Each course description features a link to the sample syllabus that lists specific requirements for that course.
On the application, you’ll be asked to make a second choice in the event the first selection has filled. Course selection is processed on a first-come, first serve basis when the complete application packet has been received.

LAW LINKS SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
|
For over 27 years, the Prince George’s County Bar Association (PGCBA) has sponsored the Law Links Summer Internship Program. The Law Links Program provides select Prince George’s County Public School students with summer employment opportunities in law firms and law-related agencies. Students have the opportunity to learn about the professional world, the legal system, and law office operations. The Program offers students personal interaction through their work experience, law-related activities, and the Law and Leadership Institute. The Law Links Program seeks to assist the students in reaching their post-high school goals, to encourage higher education as part of those goals, and to encourage other professional organizations to adopt similar programs in the ensuing years. This is a paid summer internship for students entering the 11th and 12th grade.
Once selected, we assign each student to a participating law firm or law-related agency. The student is expected to work 30 to 40 hours each week throughout the Program. Included in the 30 to 40 hour week is the Law and Leadership Institute, a class that the student attends each week at the courthouse. This year, the Program will run for a seven week period, from June 22, 2020 to August 14, 2020.
The application deadline has been extended and students may apply through April 5, 2020. Application form and directions for submission is attached. Should you have any questions regarding the Law Links Program, please contact/call (301) 952-3767 or napearson@co.pg.md.us.
