The Maryland State Financial Aid Application (MSFAA)
|
The Maryland State Financial Aid Application (MSFAA) is available to applicants who are ineligible to receive federal aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The MSFAA allows qualified children of undocumented immigrants, who qualify for in-state tuition under §15–106.8 of the MD Education Article, to apply and be considered for certain types of State need-based financial aid, such as the: Howard P. Rawlings Educational Excellence Awards Program, the Part Time Grant, the Maryland Community College Promise Scholarship, and the Richard W. Collins III Leadership with Honor Scholarship.
What is the difference between the FAFSA and the Maryland State Financial Aid Application (MSFAA)?
Students should only complete one of the applications (not both), according to the requirements below:
1. You are eligible to complete the FAFSA at https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa if you are a:
U.S. Citizen
Permanent Resident
Eligible non-citizen
T Visa holder
2. You are eligible to complete the MSFAA if you are:
-Undocumented
-Meet the non-resident exemption as described under §15–106.8. of the MD Education Article
What should I do if I’ve already submitted a FAFSA before learning that I should have submitted a MSFAA?
-You must complete the MSFAA through the Maryland College Aid Processing (MDCAPS) portal, as MHEC will not be able to use the FAFSA to determine your eligibility for State financial aid. The MDCAPS portal is found on the MHEC website at www.mhec.maryland.gov.
When is the deadline to submit the MSFAA?
-The MSFAA must be completed by the established deadline for the scholarship or grant program the applicant is applying for.
-To view the MSFAA deadlines for the various state financial aid grant and scholarship programs click https://mhec.state.md.us/preparing/Pages/FinancialAid/descriptions.aspx

GIRL RISING
|
Umoja Girls participated in an interactive discussion with our very own Ms. Danielle Epp, the 9th/10th-grades administrator. The session addressed the 2013 documentary film, Girl Rising, about nine girls from developing countries showing them overcoming great obstacles to obtain an education and change their fates. Ms. Epps did an outstanding job in guiding Umoja through the life of Sokha's story one of the nine girls featured in documentary film.
Umoja shared their stories made connections to the importance of telling your own story and being the author of your own life story. They worked in groups to reflect on stereotypes about girls in their generation and clearly identify who they truly are. The girls ended on a positive note by writing an encouraging word to their Umoja Sister completing this statement, As we begin the second semester I want you to know__________________________________. The notes will be given to their sisters to encourage and inspire their greatness during the second semester.
We are moving our Umoja girls in the spirit of greatness in whatever and wherever their dreams, goals and desires take them. Ms. Epps major kudos and we will continue to create the leaders and spread that Umoja Girl Magic!
