Breaking Down the S.T.E.A.M. Door
|
Young ladies of CMIT South Middle School and High School are invited to attend our "Breaking Down the S.T.E.A.M. Door" event sponsored by Ready, Set, Help and 3M.
This event is planned for girls in the age range of 12 to 16 years old, on October 26th at 9:00 am - 2:00 pm in Washington, D.C.
The event attendees will rotate through sessions with hands-on exercises led by women who work in each of the S.T.E.A.M. fields. Women are underrepresented in S.T.E.A.M. career fields, but we are women in the industry working to change that! The goal of this event is to introduce the girls to women who have broken down the door of traditional S.T.E.A.M. job roles, and encourage the girls to consider careers in these fields.
CMIT South previously partnered with Ready, Set, Help and hosted a similar S.T.E.M. event during October 2017. It was a great learning experience for everyone who attended the 1-day workshop!
Attached is an overview of our Ready, Set, Help organization, along with a flyer for the event.

Umoja Girls- Why Spelman ? Why not?
|
Oh to be a Spelman Girl!
On Thursday, October 17th Umoja & Umoja Too experienced Spelman College from the eye of a true Spelman Girl, Ms. Tara Newton Class of 1996, Social Worker with Alexandria Public Schools!
The girls were provided with the rich history of Spelman and a discussion on the Pros & Cons of attending one of the all-girl HBCUs, The Spelman College located in the heart of Atlanta.
The girls had great questions and the discussion gave all in the room something to think about as it relates to the girl power we all share. A huge take away from Ms. Newton was she loves her HBCU and being a Spelman Girl. Attending Spelman has empowered her in so many ways as a woman of color making it happen every day. Attending Spelman has enriched her life and has aided her with the spirit of "Sisterhood" in every facet of her life. Great presentation Ms. Newton and thank you for sharing your time with the Umoja Girls. You ROCK! ~ Girl Power at it's best.
