Hello CLF Creatives & Entrepreneurs
Many of you have experienced CultureFEST before, but this year it's going to be a little different. CultureFEST 2019 will highlight our students, parents, and teachers who enjoy creating! That’s right, we want our community to share/sell their arts and crafts at CultureFEST!
This is a unique opportunity to showcase our communities’ artistic talents! Please encourage your students to sign up for a FREE vendor booth or showcase your own artworks. Our educators are the foundation of STEAM, they help to create well-rounded students and for that service, we will provide our teachers with FREE vendor booths at CultureFEST 2019!
For our CLF Parents, we are offering booth spaces for the low price of $50 and $100 for any local businesses interested in participating! CultureFEST is an excellent opportunity to introduce your art, crafts, products, or business to all six (6) school communities! Your booth rental is treated as a charitable contribution towards CultureFEST 2020. Exhibit and invite your business network to CultureFEST!
We have expanded the festival to provide more opportunities for our visual artist, but we haven’t forgotten about our performing artist! The CultureFEST main stage is the perfect place to perform if you are a dancer, rapper, singer, poet, musician, etc. The performing arts have been a staple at CultureFEST since the very beginning. Our community comes to CultureFEST to see our students and teachers perform! Share this with your young performers and peers. Let's shine a bright light on all of our CLF artists!

Calling All Parents!
|
Hi all (again)!
I hope you are all doing well and enjoying my newsletter takeover. This is a request directly to parents on behalf of the SGA. If you do not know who I am, my name is Mr. Wassam and I am:
1) A high school science teacher
2) A teacher liaison
3) The SGA Executive Advisor
This post is for #3 on that list. I want to introduce parents to the class sponsors for the 2019-2020 school year and further ask for parent support.
Class of 2020 (Seniors) - Ms. Graves
Class of 2021 (Juniors) - Ms. Cameron
Class of 2022 (Sophomores) - Ms. Nicholas
Class of 2023 (Freshmen) - Mrs. Ellis
Each class has a staff advisor, but also needs parent support as well. Without the support from parents, little can be accomplished. To be more specific, each class needs a parent representative to voice concerns, comments, or questions to the PTO on behalf of the class. Parent representatives are also integral in planning events and ensuring the class stays on track to meet graduation fundraising and event goals.
Please contact me at nwassam@cmitsouth.org, or Ms. Andrews (PTO) at candrews.cmitspto1920@gmail.com if you are interested.

Breaking Down the S.T.E.A.M. Door
|
Young ladies of CMIT South Middle School and High School are invited to attend our "Breaking Down the S.T.E.A.M. Door" event sponsored by Ready, Set, Help and 3M.
This event is planned for girls in the age range of 12 to 16 years old, on October 26th at 9:00 am - 2:00 pm in Washington, D.C.
The event attendees will rotate through sessions with hands-on exercises led by women who work in each of the S.T.E.A.M. fields. Women are underrepresented in S.T.E.A.M. career fields, but we are women in the industry working to change that! The goal of this event is to introduce the girls to women who have broken down the door of traditional S.T.E.A.M. job roles, and encourage the girls to consider careers in these fields.
CMIT South previously partnered with Ready, Set, Help and hosted a similar S.T.E.M. event during October 2017. It was a great learning experience for everyone who attended the 1-day workshop!
Attached is an overview of our Ready, Set, Help organization, along with a flyer for the event.

No Baseball Club
|
Hello CMIT-South families and scholars,
The title of the post may be a surprise - but here is the reasoning...
I understand it was on the club form sent out to students but is no longer going to be offered as a formal club.
Instead - there will be optional baseball workouts. We are still in soccer season and basketball season is right around the corner. I will work with the coaches and athletic department to get a schedule for when (middle or high school) students can come to a baseball workout.
Workouts will either be in the field (to work on skills) or in the weight room (to build strength and endurance). All students are invited to skills workouts - but only high school students will be allowed in the weight room. All genders are welcome as well - softball uses similar skills as baseball.
I will post a schedule when I finalize dates and times. Sorry for the ambiguity but I want all of our sports to succeed and we need to balance the resources, time, and space available to us.
Let me know if you have any comments, questions, or concerns at nwassam@cmitsouth.org

CLASS of 2020 Fundraiser
|
Seniors... We are still collecting snacks to sell after school, and it is time to restock the store! Please bring in your snacks and take them to Ms. Graves's room upstairs, room 206, or you may drop them off with Ms. Hackett. We are looking for Candy, Chips, Capri Suns, Water, Juice, Honey Buns, etc. The sooner you bring them in the sooner can keep this gravy train running.
We are also looking for students who are willing to help us sell immediately after school. If you are interested in selling please see any of your board members to let them know. This is NOT eligible for service hours as it directly benefits you and your class.
Chris Brown - President
Rachel McCain - Secretary
Jasmine Browner - Treasurer
This is the final push to lower the cost of your prom tickets, and will quite possibly be the only, or one of few fundraisers that we will have this school year. Let's all chip in to make it an even greater success than it was last year!

MISA 2019 Scores are on the Way!
|
The Maryland Integrated Science Assessment Individual Student Reports were given out during 7th period on Friday, October 4th. These reports reflect scores from MISA 2019 spring administration for students in grade 5 and 8. Just like Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program, the MISA report will provide you with your child's score, indicate their performance level, as well as indicate the specific dimensions of science knowledge. This report is important to help parents and educators know if students are learning the necessary skills to stay on track. This report can also provide parents with the knowledge of their child's strengths and needs.
So, again please be on the lookout if your child was in Prince George's County this past spring in grade 5 or 8.
Georgia Jones,
Testing Coordinator

Mr. Wassam Science Updates!
|
Hi all!
Me again, but this time for science! I have broken this post into two parts - the first for AP Environmental and the second for Biology. Some information is the same but please read all of the information in your scholar's section.
ESAP (Environmental Science AP):
- The mini-STEM project is due NEXT WEEK 10/11/19 and students are NOT to bring in anything on paper or poster. It will be submitted and presented electronically - please see Edmodo for more details.
- We have just finished our first unit of the year! Students should have completed a Progress Check on the AP Classroom Site through College Board.
- We are beginning a new unit on Ecology. The plan is to finish this unit in 2 weeks time as we are inching closer to the AP test date.
- In addition to this, please talk with your students and decide if you want to register for the AP test. The registration deadline is fast approaching.
- Students will continue to have readings on which to take notes at home and prepare for class discussions and lab assignments
- Students are asked to bring back a signed release form for my professional development - I need to film a class to reflect on my teaching, not students. However, I still need a release form as their image or voice may be in the video. Thank you for the support!
Biology:
- The mini-STEM project is due NEXT WEEK 10/11/19 and students are NOT to bring in anything on paper or poster. It will be submitted and presented electronically - please see Edmodo for more details.
- We are almost finished with the first unit of the year. In lieu of a test - the STEM project will be the Unit One Assessment.
- Our next unit will focus on the microscopic parts of Biology. We will begin studying atoms, molecules, and my favorite - water! With this comes the beginning of the biochemistry of life and chemical reactions.
All - last couple of reminders:
- There is no school for students on 10/18/19 (a Friyay!)
- Quarter one ends on 11/5/19 (4.5 weeks from now)
- Parent Teacher Conferences are on 11/11/19
If you have any comments, questions, or concerns then please reach out via email: nwassam@cmitsouth.org
