Character Education Lesson Review
This week the students have been empowered how to communicate effectively MAJOR OBJECTIVES: * Define communication * Discuss verbal and non-verbal communication * Define misunderstanding(s) * Discuss how misunderstandings develop * Discuss how misunderstandings can be avoided VOCABULARY: * Communication .. the act of expressing oneself in such a way that one is readily and clearly understood * Nonverbal .......... .body language and facial expression * Paraphrase ........ restating of a message to clarify its meaning * Contradictory ...... in opposition to or at odds with * Message .......... an act of communication * Response ......... answer * Ambiguous ......... uncertain or obscure * Misunderstanding .. a failure to interpret a message correctly * Verbal .................. spoken * Effective ... having the intended result * Interpersonal ..... person to person POINTS to MAKE: * There are 2 major forms of communication; VERBAL and NONVERBAL. * Verbal communication refers to the specific words that we use and our voice inflections (tone of our voice). * Nonverbal communication refers to body language (mannerisms, facial expressions, body positions, body and hand gestures, etc.). * Effective communication exists between two persons when the receiver interprets the message in the same way the sender intended it. * Avoiding misunderstanding by sending the same message on verbal and nonverbal channels. * Asking questions can dramatically improve your understanding of what someone means when they tell you something by clarifying things that may either be poorly communicated or difficult to communicate. * Being specific (for clarity of true understanding) * Paraphrasing the message back to the speaker or restating in your own words what you think the sender means. SOCIAL SKILLS: SESSION GOALS: To empower: students with basic social skills pertaining to close personal relationships, interactions with someone you are attracted to, and planning social activities. MAJOR OBJECTIVES: * Discuss what attributes attract individuals to one another * Discuss the significance of physical appearance in relationships * Apply general social skills to interactions with someone you are attracted to * Identify new and different social activities * Discuss ways to approach others with ideas for social activities * Discuss ways of responding when .......... VOCABULARY: * Attributes ... distinctive qualities or characteristics * Interaction .. to act with another POINTS TO MAKE: * People tend to have a certain amount of nervousness when talking to someone they are attempting to impress. * We all talk to everyone differently according to how we perceive them. * The common dominator that should be discussed whenever you're talking to parents, teachers, peers, friends someone you're attracted to, law enforcement is .................................................. * You talk to them with RESPECT! The objective is to talk to people the way you want them to talk to you. * An awful lot of conflicts (occur) experienced are due to lack of communication and respect. Many will stand up for themselves in situations that are deemed offensive but-fore the disconnect with communication lacking assertiveness and compassion, respect is neglected. * Humble responses are best when one does not attempt to not upset, regardless, and most of the time, one-on-one conversations are better than group discussions. Group discussions are more than likely damaging when one express a dislike towards another. * In order to resolve a conflict, one must be in a position to extend COMPROMISE, NEGOTIATE and remain HUMBLE, especially when attempting to resolve disputes with one another. SUMMARY: * People may be attracted to someone for a variety of reasons (non-physical as well as physical). * People's ideas of attractiveness differ. * Many people are able to comfortably talk with others but feel awkward when trying to start a conversation with someone they are attracted to. * The same principles and skills that apply to good conversation and communication apply to good conversation and communication in close personal relationships .......... * We should be specific, positive, and direct when initiating social activities .... Sincerely, Dr. Sullivan-Williams (aka Dr. BB) Senior Certified Life-Skills/Character Education Instructor
