Staff Spotlight!
This week's STAFF SPOTLIGHT is Mrs. Graves! Thank you, Mr. Barrett, for answering a few questions for us! 1. What grades/subjects do you teach? Mrs. G.: 9th-Algebra 1 and Algebra 1 Lab; 11th - Civil Engineering and Architecture (CEA in PLTW) 2. What college did you go to? What degree(s) do you have? Mrs. G.: NC State University- Bachelor's of Environmental Design in Architecture 3. Where are you originally from? Mrs. G.: North Carolina (woot woot) 4. What hobbies do you have outside of school? Mrs. G.: Audio production, Tutoring, Educational Consultation, Painting, Acting, Dancing, Singing, Cosmetology, writing poetry, reading, watching TV when I can find the time, Driving (taking my daughter and I to all of our activities). 5. What advice would you give to students to survive the rest of the school year? Mrs. G.: You don't have to like the work, you just have to do it. Moving forward in life there are a lot of things you will have to do that you won't necessarily enjoy, working out is one of those things for me, but when you buckle down and just get it done you will be better for doing so. The end is in sight, make sure you finish strong! 6. Tell us other interesting facts that we would never know about you! Mrs. G.: I won a school pageant in high school to be Miss Dudley HS and my talent was reciting poetry that I self authored. I love food and enjoy weird food combinations. I stopped relaxing my hair because I found out that a relaxer can eat through a soda can.

UMOJA Defense class ~ Honor of Women's Month!
What better way to end our Umoja Women's Month Celebration than learning to defend ourselves as young ladies! Today we received a top-notch defense class lead by one of Prince's George's County's Finest Swat Team officer, Mr. Shawn Reaves of Reality Based Training. He started our training with running around the gym, jumping jacks and push-ups. Shawn explained the first thing about self-defense is being in shape! Shawn shared with Umoja that he has a daughter 'Simone' 16 years old and he has taught her the same tactics learned today to protect herself. Words of Wisdom from Mr. Shawn as girls go away to college, or the workforce, you must know how to protect yourself. Some takeaways: Never have your hands in your pocket The first place to hit your attacker is in the nose & the eyes 80% of the attacks is with someone you know Hammer Fist You cannot control what an attacker is going to do Defense front kick Knife to throat You have to have a line in the sand The mindset has to change when defending yourself Great time! The girls were engaged and learn 101 how to defend themselves. This may have to be a part II! Girl power at it's BEST! Thanks, Mr. Shawn

Please take a look at our testing schedule for this Spring and plan accordingly. It is extremely important that your child is in school every day and on time when their grade or class is scheduled to test.  Remember that MCAP English Language Arts and Mathematics begins on Monday, April 8th___ and continues through Tuesday, May 28th, according to the schedule noted above.             WE NEED YOUR HELP TO MAKE SURE YOUR STUDENT DOES HIS OR HER BEST JOB.  PLEASE…MAKE SURE… Your child arrives at school on time.  .        2. Your child eats a substantial breakfast in the morning that will give him/her the necessary energy and alertness for participation in the testing.        3.Your child gets a good night’s sleep the night before each testing day.         4. Your child is in school every testing day.   Children absent on a testing day will participate in make-up testing.         5. Please encourage your child to do his/her best! Work Submission and Grades - Mr. Wassam
Hi CMIT-South families, I hope everyone is doing well. I just wanted to update everyone on our class and a few reminders. First, grades have been published and I will send emails out shortly concerning students' performance in my class. Second, I have edited a pinned post on Edmodo to say the following: "Just a reminder: No google docs will be graded. Only PDF and Word or PowerPoint will be opened and graded. In 4th Quarter - NO late work will be accepted. Please see me if you have any questions!" Finally, here are the updates for my classes. Physics: We are beginning our chapters on light, light properties, and mirrors. We just finished our chapters on waves and sound. The next test will be on waves, sound, and light. They all relate so it is a good assessment about the material. The next project will focus on creating something using our known properties of light and waves. Biology: We are still working within the genetics sphere. We have finished DNA/RNA/Proteins and had a quiz to wrap up that unit of chapters. Our next project is due this coming Friday, April 5th. It has been shared with students and directions are in the folders section on Edmodo. Our next test will be on human genetics and genetic engineering within the next few weeks. As always, if you have any questions feel free to email me at nwassam@cmitsouth.org. Have a great weekend!
