DUAL ENROLLMENT @ CMIT SOUTH
|
Advisors from Prince Georges Community College visited CMIT South on May 17, 2018 to advise students and help them with college class selections. Eighty-five 10th grade students at CMIT South sat for the Accuplacer exam in April in anticipation of summer and fall semesters at Prince Georges Community College and Bowie State University.
Thirty-one percent met eligibility to be deemed College and Career Ready with a combine score in Reading Comprehension and Sentence Skills of 79 and 90 respectively.
These students will be taking classes starting this summer fall. We are proud of their achievements and wish them the very best.

13 Reasons Why on Netflix
|
Netflix has released its second season of 13 Reasons Why, a series that emphasizes some of the social and emotional struggles teenagers experience. This series is very graphic and follows the life of a teenager that ends with suicide. This Netflix series is based on a book titled 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher.
This book has been around for awhile.. it was actually a required reading for me in high school. The first season of the series was released in March of 2017 and now the second series is out.
I strongly encourage all parents to watch both seasons prior to allowing your children to watch it. It is incredibly important to have a conversation with your child about what they should do if they ever have thoughts or feelings related to depression, self-injurious behaviors, or suicide. There are many resources available, both at school and outside of school that can provide supports if your child ever experiences these types of thoughts.
Please read the attached document that explains what staff members, parents, and students need to know about the 13 Reasons Why series.
Please contact me with any concerns you may have. If it is an emergency concern, please dial 911 immediately.

From the Desk of Mrs. Holder... May 16, 2018

May 16, 2018
Dear Parents:
This week wraps up another set of Progress Report grades for the year and PARCC testing. First, I would like to congratulate all of the students for finishing strong! They have worked hard all year in order to successfully complete the various standardized tests with high scores. I am confident they have done well and commend them for their effort and continued success.
The End-of-Year projects are now posted on Edmodo. Students should already be actively working on their projects. They are able to select from a few choices in completing this assignment. The choices are a movie, narrative, or a graphic novel. Students may be working alone or in groups. The rubric for these items is also available on Edmodo to ensure they touch on each of the items they have learned throughout the year in the project. Students are aware the submission should be appropriate and the submissions are due at the beginning of June. During class, the students have been given time to work on the projects and we have gone over several technology options for them to use in creating their work of art. Examples of these are Storybird.com, Autodesk Sketchbook, Pixton, PowToons, ZooBurst, WeVideo, Fire Alpaca, i-Movie, Anime Studio, Clip Studio Paint, and so many others. Your child should have a preference by now and has tried several of these during assignments we have completed in class. BE SURE TO ASK THEM ABOUT THEIR PROJECT AND THE DETAILS!
We are currently in Quarter 4 of the school year and the end of the year is rapidly approaching. For the current Book of the Month, the students are reading The Devil’s Arithmetic. It is about the Holocaust and because of the sensitive nature of the book, please discuss this with your child. As extra credit, the students have a sheet that they can fill out about the movie that was created about the book that was posted on Edmodo. The movie is PG-rated but please view this movie with your child because of the nature of the subject as well. Some students may be more sensitive to this topic than others.
As always, thank you for allowing me the privilege to engage with your child through literature this year at CMIT-South. I am always available for suggestions and collaboration from the parents in this process. My contact information is listed at the top of this correspondence, the syllabus, and Edmodo.
Warm regards,
Mrs. Dee Wells-Holder Middle School RELA Department Grade 7 dwellsholder@cmitsouth.org
