Breakfast with the Principal
|
The parent breakfasts with Mr. Brauer have continued. This week, Ms. Linnenkamp joined the discussion with the parents of Bowie State and Carnegie Mellon. The focus of these discussions centered around servicing our students, changes in policy and what has been implemented around the school for the 2018-2019 school year, such as, changes to physical plant , new curriculum and school-wide goals for the year. All of these changes were made prior to the start of the school year so that our school improves for our learning community. However, not everyone is aware of the changes and the positive impact we are seeing from them already. Therefore, these parent breakfasts serve to disclose that information gap. If you haven't received an invitation yet, don't be alarmed. Mr. Brauer is meeting with parents of individual colleges and is working through the list as quickly as schedules permit.

PSAT 8/9
|
The Practice SAT (PSAT 8/9) for 8th grade students will be given the morning of December 5, 2018. This test comes from College Board and provides indicators in many areas.
PSAT 8/9 is used for:
1. Acceptance into PGCPS Specialty High School Programs (Science and Tech, Aerospace Engineering, etc.)
2. Provides areas of strengths and growths for which to improve in an effort to be prepared for the SATs.
3. PSAT 8/9 is also a predictor of success in High School Honors Courses and AP courses at CMIT High School, and is one piece of data used for placement (amongst others).
CMIT North Middle School prepares students for the PSAT 8/9 through the standard curriculum and does not stop to prepare solely for the test.
Parents are encouraged to utilize the following resources in their spare time to practice and prepare.

Hello!
We only have two weeks left in the first quarter. We will be having our Unit 2 Test on Space on November 2nd. This will be the last grade that goes in before the report card, so please make sure your student studies. They will be using a short study guide and all of their Space notes in their interactive notebook. The assessment will NOT be open book. Content must be memorized.
Any glue stick donations are greatly appreciated to help the students glue any models into their notebooks! Thank you (in advance)!
Our next Unit will focus on fossils, so if you're child doesn't think Space science is their favorite topic, tell them the next topic will ROCK! (literally)
A STEM fair packet has been released and the students need to turn in their proposal by October 29th. We will have a 6th grade parent meeting at the school at 6pm on October 30th to meet and ask me all about the STEM fair and how they can help their students. It is REQUIRED for every CMIT student and is a large portion of their grade for Quarter 2 and Quarter 3.

MAKER'S - COPE from Grade 8 Honors Biology Class
|
The year is 1800 and Microscopes have opened up a whole new dimension in science. It helps the scientists to study the microorganisms, the cells, the crystalline structures and the molecular structures. They are one of the most important diagnostic tools when the doctors examine tissue samples
We live in an amazing world – and that beauty and complexity extends far beyond what humans can see unaided. It’s a pleasure for me to share my time helping them to build their microscope. I have no doubt that their electronic microscope is the beginning of a great STEM career.
Our 3D microscope model resources invite students to share the sense of wonder that scientists have felt for centuries discovering how to see life beyond minute organisms. Grade 8 honor science class worked diligently to create their own microscope and explore the phenomenon of this optical instrument used for viewing very small objects typically magnified several hundred times.
Their paper microscopes have open up a world experiences on how significant their maker’s-cope is compared to the existing microscope in today’s world. The “MAKER’S COPE” is graded for its indestructibility and completeness. The 3D projects were built to revolutionize the way other students are educated.
From plant and animal anatomy to cells and DNA and even down to the level of atoms, there are worlds within worlds of detail to be explored on the microscopic scales.

CELLULAR INSIGHTS FROM GRADE 8 LIFE SCIENCE CLASSES
|
Organoids, spheroids, and the study of cells as 3D models show great potential in many applications including disease modeling and regenerative medicine. 3D cellular models made by the Grade 8 Life science students offer an opportunity to better understand complex biology in a physiologically relevant context.
3D Cell modeling is a fun, easy way to learn about plant and animal cells. Students were asked to create a 3D model that includes all of a cell's organelles using either household or edible materials. Although a guide was disseminated to complete list of plant and animal cell organelles. Students are free to come up with their own project materials to links the educational constituents to mimic the cells.
Models are simplified representations of more complex systems that help scientists structure the knowledge they acquire. As such, they are universal and priceless in scientific research and communication. Because science education strives to make classroom activities more closely reflect science in practice, models have become an integral teaching and learning tool woven throughout the Next Generation Science Standards to phenomenal learning.

Mrs. Crespo's Science Class Updates!
|
Students in Life Science class learned the science principles behind the lesson in "Cell in its Environment". They learned how materials move into and out of cells. In order to fully understand the process of diffusion and osmosis, students had able to observe the diffusion of food color in water, and how osmosis took place in white roses placed in colored water for 24 hours. They also did interactive activity and watched videos on diffusion, osmosis, facilitated diffusion, active transport, endocytosis, and exocytosis.
On the other hand, students in Physical Science class learned the principles in "Changes in Matter". They performed an experiment on "Physical and Chemical Change" in which students had a chance to observe and determine if change were physical or chemical. They also experienced a virtual experiment on Physical and Chemical Change.
Both classes just took chapter test last Friday.

Dear CMIT Parents,
We are having a multicultural fest, as we do every school year and are asking for your help. The cultural fest is a student event where they get to show insights on their culture. While the audience is going around witnessing these different cultures of students, it would be nice to have something to eat and drink.
We as an athletic department are asking if you could kindly donate snacks and drinks for this event. Also, if you have a specific culture you may bring in a home-cooked dish to share in the event.
This will help us raise money within the sports department. If you are interested in supporting all athletes in this event, please click the link below and fill out which school you will be supporting and what you would like to donate.
Thank You !!

FAQs |
|
Q: Is CMIT North MS a public school?
A: Yes We are a public charter school who is staffed by PGCPS teachers and administration, along with CLF staff. We also benefit from additional guidance, management and financial support from Chesapeake Light House Foundation, whose educational concept this school is based on.
Q: Do siblings get preference in applying to CMIT?
A: The process of gaining entry to any charter school in Prince George's County is through a lottery. However, siblings of already attending CMIT students are weighted differently during the lottery process. This different weighting gives preference to siblings.
Q: What makes CMIT different then any other school in the district?
A: Although we are a PGCPS public charter, we are given some autonomy over curriculum. This autonomy allows us to fast track students, who are academically ready, through selected high school courses in math, foreign language and technology. It is that fast tracking that opens up opportunity to more advanced coursework on the college level while still in high school. Additionally, we offer students supports and enrichments to every student, not available at most schools.
Q: Do you offer everything the big middle and high schools offer?
A: Unlike many school in Maryland, we do not have a full spectrum offerings in sports. Instead, our focus is on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics). Therefore, our sports offerings are more limited. We offer, boys and girls soccer, basketball, boy's softball, boy's baseball, boys and girls track/field at the high school. With that said we recently (2017) won the girls county basketball championship and made it to the playoffs in soccer. Our High school recently opened a multi-million dollar, state of the art gym complex. The middle school has also added an indoor gym space. Lastly, we do offer special educational services, but becuase we are a school of choice, the amount of service hours we can provide is limited to 7.5 hours a week. Services hours are delivered by special education teachers but are limited to literacy and math courses.
