FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE
Student Walkers
Many parents are electing to have their children walk from CMIT. If you choose to do so, please follow these protocol: 1. Complete a Walker's Permission Slip and turn into Front Office. (See link) 2. Students must dismiss when Walker's are called over the announcements. 3. Walker's must have transportation arrangements off CMIT property. (Students cannot be picked up anywhere along Front Place).

TRAFFIC PROCEDURES
Thank you to all of our parents and drivers that have been so patient with us as we open the new school year! You help make CMIT North Middle School a safer place for our scholars. Please continue to adhere to the traffic patterns on the attached Traffic Flow Map. We are continuously working with those unaware of the procedures to ensure they are informed and comply. Some key points: 1. Only students of commercial bus and van riders are permitted to exit to the bus lot. 2. Student Walkers must have a signed permission slip on file. 2. All other students are required to be picked up in the rear of the school building. 3. Do not pick up your student on the side of the road, round-a-bouts, or other parking lots. 4. Respect and obey the requests of school personnel directing traffic. Dismissal time is at 2:55pm each afternoon. On Thursday and Friday, student pick up was complete by 3:20. That's 25 minutes for 550 students to get to their lockers, exit the building, and for vehicles to exit the school grounds. Additionally, after school programs will begin October 1st allowing traffic congestion to be reduced. We appreciate your patience. As these procedures become routine the process will become even more efficient.

BREAKING NEWS
Welcome Mr. Field
My name is Justin Field and I am entering my tenth year as a Math Teacher for public schools. I value each student that I come in contact with and consider it a privilege to help students improve and/or refine their math skills. One-on-one attention is a strong skill of mine and has proven to help a vast majority of struggling students. Additionally, my experience and knowledge in technology strengthens lesson planning and class interactions with students to enhance their educational experience. I am a graduate of both Michigan State University and Johns Hopkins University.

6th Grade Science with Ms. Butler
Greetings! I am Ms. Butler and will be teaching 6th grade Earth & Space science. I attended the University of Miami for both my undergraduate and masters' degrees with a focus in marine ecosystems and policy in aquaculture. I believe in getting your hands dirty and learning and leading by example. Our year will be full of labs and questions and answers for anything science. As we explore the science around us, I expect involvement, creativity, and look for the student's awareness of the connection that science has to all subjects. I am excited to work with the other wonderful teachers, and learn all about my new students. Miss Butler

Spanish with Ms. Cantrell
Hola! My name is Christina Cantrell and I teach half of Spanish 1 and all of Spanish 2. I attended Emory & Henry College on the far side (the pretty side!) of Virginia. Although I am new to CMIT North Middle School, I am not new to the constellation of CLF schools. Before arriving at CMIT I taught at Chesapeake Science Point High School in Anne Arundel County, a sister school to CMIT. I believe that it is most important to build relationships and rapport with your students and only then can you teach the content in a way they will receive it. I am most excited about continuing my career at CMIT Middle School and testing out my skills in a new venue.

Technology with Ms. Conde
Hello Everyone, my name is Jennifer Conde and I will be Teaching 6th Grade Technology. I enjoy teaching because there is always something new that my students teach me. I enjoy working with children and believe that children are eager to learn, especially when learning is experiential. I studied Fine Arts and Education at Bowie State University earning a Masters Degree of Fine Arts. I have professional experience working with HTML, CSS and computer illustrations. I am most excited about the new school year and having a bunch of smiling faces entering into the classroom. Teaching young minds is a task that cannot be taken lightly. It is full of challenges, at times frustrations, but mostly responsibilities. However, it is a task that is also full of excitement, wonder, and joy. I strongly believe that all children are capable of learning, if they have the proper motivation and direction from their teachers. As a teacher I need to be knowledgeable of the latest learning, motivation, behavior, and developmental theories in order to be effective for my students and push them to reach their full potential. It is my duty to see that all my students are being motivated and being engaged. They deserve my time and full attention in regards to their education. I also want to create a classroom that is a safe learning environment for all. If students do not feel safe in my classroom, whether it is emotionally, physically, or socially, their learning will greatly decrease, if not shut down all together. It is important to me that my students, as well as their parents, other teachers, administrators, and people in the community, see me as someone they can approach, who will be fair. I am most excited about the all the technology and how it enhances the learning experience.

Welcome To CMIT Middle School Mr. McCormick
My name is Bryan McCormick, MS, and I will be teaching Physical Education during the 1st & 2nd quarters and Health during the 3rd & 4th quarters. I will be educating all of 6th and a portion of 7th grade this school year. I began my college tenure at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and transferred to Towson University where I received my Bachelors Degree in Sports Management with a minor in Business Administration. I obtained my graduate degree from Georgetown University while majoring in Sports Industry Management with a concentration in Marketing, Digital Media, and Communications. My educational philosophy is “Learning is physical as well as mental”. My expectation for the year is that each student leaves with a better understanding of not just themselves but others. I’m most excited about working at CMIT due to the opportunity to impact the youth and prepare them to fulfill their destiny. Best, Bryan McCormick, MS

PSAT 8/9
The Practice SAT for 8th grade students (PSAT 8/9) will be given the morning of December 5, 2018. This test comes from College Board and provides indicators in many areas. PSAT 8/9 is used for: 1. Acceptance into PGCPS Specialty High School Programs (Science and Tech, Aerospace Engineering, etc.) 2. Provides areas of strengths and growths for which to improve in an effort to be prepared for the SATs. 3. PSAT 8/9 is also a predictor of success in High School Honors Courses and AP courses at CMIT High School, and is one piece of data used for placement (amongst others). CMIT North Middle School prepares students for the PSAT 8/9 through the standard curriculum and does not stop to prepare solely for the test. Parents are encouraged to utilize the following resources in their spare time to practice and prepare. Khan Academy https://online.flippingbook.com/view/619592/ PARCC/PSAT standards in Khan Academy: Use the links in the document to go directly to Khan Academy that focus on these topics. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zTi4_T3WZuEgaycxZzE50c-EOzhJMXTOPid07j7vd6w/edit?usp=sharing

Our school will be participating in National Run @ Work/School Day on Sept. 21st. On the 21st our students and faculty will be running a 3/4 mile course around the CMIT to promote health and fitness for our students. All students will be able to wear their P.E. uniforms on this day. Our students will be collecting pledge donations for each lap they run to support their grade to use for future events this school year. The pledge sheets were given out to all students on Wednesday, September 12. The pledge sheet is also attached below. We are asking for donations of cases of water for this event. You can leave your donations at the front desk. Please contact Mrs. Linnenkamp at jlash@cmitacademy.org with any questions!

TEACHER ANNOUNCEMENTS
Mr. Conde-RELA 7
Testing is all done! The first week was mainly focused on Student Learning Objective (SLO) tests and Measures for Academic Progress (MAP) tests to monitor students' reading and writing levels, but all the tests were finally completed Wednesday this past week. Students have started to read biographies and autobiographies to practice during-reading strategies that they will implement throughout the year. I have posted the lesson presentations in the stream on Google Classrooms for your convenience to cross-reference my notes in their Reader Notebook and the expectations in the lesson presentations. Each student will keep a Reader Notebook that I will check on a daily basis to ensure the class assignments are fully completed. The Reader Notebook is a great tool for students to keep track of their reading comprehension and for studying in preparation for weekly tests. Students are currently reading Angelou's memoir Encounter with Martin Luther King and they will take an assessment on it Friday. In addition to reading comprehension, the test will include vocabulary words from a list they will receive on Monday. Most of the assessment will be multiple choice, but there is a writing component to assess students' ability to express their analysis of the text in writing as well. The Reader Notebook can be in the form of a spiral notebook or a composition notebook with perforated pages in case I ask for them to turn something in from their notebooks. The notebook must be brought to class everyday along with a pen. I do not have a pencil sharpener in my classroom, so I prefer the students to use pen instead. I do not mind pencils, but pens will ensure that students can do their work without the need for resources I do not offer.

FAQs

Q: Is CMIT North MS a public school?

A: Yes We are a public charter school who is staffed by PGCPS teachers and administration, along with CLF staff. We also benefit from additional guidance, management and financial support from Chesapeake Light House Foundation, whose educational concept this school is based on.

Q: Do siblings get preference in applying to CMIT?

A: The process of gaining entry to any charter school in Prince George's County is through a lottery. However, siblings of already attending CMIT students are weighted differently during the lottery process. This different weighting gives preference to siblings.

Q: What makes CMIT different then any other school in the district?

A: Although we are a PGCPS public charter, we are given some autonomy over curriculum. This autonomy allows us to fast track students, who are academically ready, through selected high school courses in math, foreign language and technology. It is that fast tracking that opens up opportunity to more advanced  coursework on the college level while still in high school.  Additionally, we offer students supports and enrichments to every student, not available at most schools.

Q: Do you offer everything the big middle and high schools offer?

A: Unlike many school in Maryland, we do not have a  developed tradition in sports. Our focus is on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics). Therefore, our sports offerings are more limited.  We offer, boys and girls soccer, basketball, boy's softball, boy's baseball,  boys and girls track/field at the high school. With that said we recently (2017) won the girls county basketball championship and made it to the playoofs in soccer. Our High school recently opened a multi-million dollar, state of the art gym complex. Additionally, we offer special educational services, but becuase we are a school of choice the amount of service hours we can provide is limited to 7.5 hours a week and in only literacy and math courses.
