My name is Dr. Clarke and I am your program coordinator. I am committed to fulfilling to serve our students in school, especially during club hours. We have more than 50 clubs and 6 active tutorings that run from Mondays through Saturdays, and around 180 to 200 hundred students each day attend those programs. There are 362 active students within the week that goes to different programs, without counting the students that attend our athletics until 9 pm on certain days.

We look forward to hearing from you, and thank you in advance!

Earth Optimism In Action!
|
On Tuesday, October 18th, students from the Earth Optimism club participated in one of three activities around the CMIT campus. Some students helped plant a native garden in the flowerbeds around the flagpole and close to the cafeteria entrance, while other students began painting the storm drain to raise awareness of water pollution, or walked around the school and neighboring lots to pick up trash.
None of the projects are completed, but with another club meeting this Tuesday, we hope to finish them soon. Please take a look at all the progress the students have made!

HACK CLUB - Discovering the Joy of Code, found an Advisor
|
Hack Clubs typically meet for 1.5 hours each week found an Advisor in the person of Mrs. Tookie Sise, a volunteer parent while waiting for the availability of Mr. Sarey Sok who coaches our Soccer team, after the season. CMIT teachers and staff were all stretched out from being athletic to enrichment and services sponsors. It is through the generosity of Ms. Tookie Sise to facilitate the class while waiting for the availability of Mr. Sarey.
The club gathers every Monday.
Hack Club started out like any other robot team or chess club, typically requiring a "teacher sponsor" who donates a classroom after school for 60 minutes once or twice a week. “Now that they have the physical space, and have six active members, they stay forefront in learning to code. For Hack Club, learning to code is like having superpowers. They practice as users of technology to a creator. It's not taught like a class but as a creative and inclusive space. CMIT hack club is student-led and members carry out self-directed projects. Through the 'Hour of Coding' experience, the group hopes to inspire other students to pursue classes and careers in STEM-related fields.
If you are interested to join or have other questions, please email terry.bazemoreiii2026@cmitacademy.org or ousman.sise2026@cmitacademy.org.

THE ART & CREATIVITY CLUB
|
We are Amanda Queen and Jescie Tinio, members of the Arts and Creativity club. On Wednesday, October 20, 2022, under the supervision of our school's program coordinator, Dr. Clarke met with our Principal, Ms. Ozturk to discuss present and future mural plans in our school's cafeteria.
The Arts and Creativity Club (A&C) aims to be a school and community that lays the foundation of positivity around campus and paints it colorfully. We strive to integrate green school campaigns, such as healthy eating habits, mental health, and other real & still life paintings for fun and skill enrichment through on-campus activities and interactions with other art enthusiasts. Through the vision of Dr. Clarke, we aim to bring artists' students together and foster ideas of positive awareness in art. The A&C partnered with the Art Class 2 of Ms. Gotlieb to combine enriched opportunities and experiences for all students by creating murals on the campus.
The first mural of this kind, "mother nature" located in the school's lobby, was created through the partnership between the Green Club and the Art class which is adored by everyone on campus.
We as a team, strive to bring the synergy of arts and creativity in all possible spheres of life and make it count through multiple channels.
The A&C Club, sponsored by Ms. Fermin, is an avenue to nurture artistic skills & a gateway to connect our school with the larger art community.

Pre Health Organization
|
Would you like to attend community services at the University of Maryland?
The Pre Health club under the advisorship of Ms. Graham invites all students who advocate for healthcare. As aspiring young people, high school students are often unsure of which career path to pursue. However, in some cases, students may already have a general idea of their area of interest. If you are interested in pursuing a health career and may be wondering what extracurricular activities you should do in high school to increase your chances of getting into college while still preparing for college medical or healthcare courses, this program is intended to inspire students in under-resourced communities to pursue a career in health education and arrange community service at the University of Maryland Hospitals and Center.
Please fill out the form below to attend meetings and register for community services. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc5HLF0ZzSKYJJ0Zj_vsb9xM6JmcTwGkFWIJKVf_V2rlJYB9w/viewform?usp=pp_url
Students must undergo specific training for services like shadowing and assisting a physician or first aid services.

Ms. O'Donnell's 9th Grade Honors English Classes
|
Our classes have been reading All American Boys by Jason Reynolds (a native of PG County) and Brendan Kiely. The book examines the lives of two students who find themselves bound by a violent incident involving the police. It has sparked great discussions in class and students have been making real world connections with the story. Take a minute and ask your student to share their thoughts on the book. Here is a synopsis from Amazon.
A 2016 Coretta Scott King Author Honor book, and recipient of the Walter Dean Myers Award for Outstanding Children’s Literature.
In this New York Times bestselling novel, two teens—one black, one white—grapple with the repercussions of a single violent act that leaves their school, their community, and, ultimately, the country bitterly divided by racial tension.
A bag of chips. That’s all sixteen-year-old Rashad is looking for at the corner bodega. What he finds instead is a fist-happy cop, Paul Galluzzo, who mistakes Rashad for a shoplifter, mistakes Rashad’s pleadings that he’s stolen nothing for belligerence, mistakes Rashad’s resistance to leave the bodega as resisting arrest, mistakes Rashad’s every flinch at every punch the cop throws as further resistance and refusal to STAY STILL as ordered. But how can you stay still when someone is pounding your face into the concrete pavement?
There were witnesses: Quinn Collins—a varsity basketball player and Rashad’s classmate who has been raised by Paul since his own father died in Afghanistan—and a video camera. Soon the beating is all over the news and Paul is getting threatened with accusations of prejudice and racial brutality. Quinn refuses to believe that the man who has basically been his savior could possibly be guilty. But then Rashad is absent. And absent again. And again. And the basketball team—half of whom are Rashad’s best friends—start to take sides. As does the school. And the town. Simmering tensions threaten to explode as Rashad and Quinn are forced to face decisions and consequences they had never considered before.
Written in tandem by two award-winning authors, this four-starred reviewed tour de force shares the alternating perspectives of Rashad and Quinn as the complications from that single violent moment, the type taken directly from today’s headlines, unfold and reverberate to highlight an unwelcome truth.

AP US and AP Gov Students Visit the Capitol!
|
On Wednesday, October 19th, 45 students from AP US History and AP Government went to the US Capitol Visitor Center where they were divided into two groups.
Each group was able to take a tour of the building and learn about its history, construction, and changes that have been made. Samuel A. (10th) stated that he "liked the National Statuary Hall because it is a great way honor American leaders and remember how they changed the nation for the better. I learned that the Capitol has been constantly expanding. and renovating throughout history."
They also participated in a classroom lesson: The Debates of the Constitutional Convention of 1787. During this lesson, the students roleplayed as delegates in order to analyze the plans, debates and compromises forged during the creation of the U.S. government and vote for the best plan they believe should be considered for the Constitution. Momoore O. (10th) stated that he "liked the classroom lesson. It made me feel like I was actually at the convention myself. I learned that New York actually withdrew in the middle of the process."

Updates from the PTSO!
|
Hello all!
The PTSO has been working a lot this past month!
1. We are ready to accept members and begin the work of supporting our CMIT North community. Membership dues are $15--$5 of which will go directly into the Athletics budget to support their needs. Remember, as a charter school PGCPS does not financially support our athletic teams. So we are helping with equipment needs, uniforms, and health and wellness support. Here is the link to join:
https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=3ZLU7REMAPRAS
2. We have been doing A LOT of fundraising, selling concessions after school and at athletic events as well as pizza sales on Tuesdays and Fridays. In the last two weeks we have raised nearly $300! If you would like to donate items for sale, we are accepting honey buns, canned soda, bottled water, boxes of assorted chips and candy bars. You can drop them off at the front desk. Thank you!
3. We do still have uniforms available for sale. We will work with administration to find a date to hold a final sale. Mostly small and medium sizes and pants are available.
4. PTSO sent out a survey asking about transportation needs and references. If you have not yet filled it out, please use this link: https://forms.gle/SX1bvquddbULT9m3A
We are hoping to put together a resource of transportation companies and possible carpooling options to share with parents. Stay tuned!
5. PTSO is also supporting one of our students who lost their mother suddenly last week. If you are interested in donating or dropping off meals/food, please contact Ms. Bond: sbond@cmitacademy.org. She has been organizing assistance for the student. Any help is appreciated.
6. Teachers have set up WISH LISTS with Amazon.com. With their Prime Day/Holiday sales coming up, this would be a great time to donate to their classrooms. Teachers create a wish list on Amazon of supplies needed for their classrooms, i.e. books, paper, pencils, etc.
