SENIOR PICTURE MAKEUPS
|
I have been in touch with the photographer and unfortunately, the casual picture date will have to moved to May. There simply aren't enough photographers to schedule a date sooner.
The MAKE UP day for senior pictures will be THURSDAY FEBRUARY 10TH FROM 9-12. First priority will be given to those students who DID NOT have a picture taken AT ALL in December. If there are still spots available, it will open up to retakes.
An email will be sent to students by Monday. If the student wishes to be scheduled they should complete them form by midnight.
I have been getting questions on which picture will be in the yearbook for seniors. It will be the drape/tux picture. Students/parents will be able to choose which one.
If you have any other questions, please let me know.
Thank you all again for your patience!

FORENSIC MOCK TRIAL - INCREDIBLE TEAMWORK
|
Overwhelming teamwork and perseverance have been demonstrated by the Forensic Mock Trial Team that fought over different districts for the past four weeks. The team has ups and down moments, by winning and losing some points. But what makes this team most promising is that the Judges of the district the team competes with each week never failed to recognize our student's ability to public speaking, critical thinking, and part of forming a persuasive, cohesive argument.
The team stayed and fought till almost 9:00 p.m. each week to give our school prestige. You might think you already know how to give a good speech or that you're pretty good at debating with your friends, but Mock Trial is on a whole other level. Assume you're delivering a direct examination and the other team's attorney raises an argument you've never considered. You must deconstruct the argument, apply federal rules of evidence to it, come up with two counter-arguments, and then condense everything into a three-sentence answer. You only have roughly 10 seconds to complete the task.
When you see these students, please address your congratulations to them as they work around the clock to bring prominence to CMIT. Emnete Theodros and Lea Brooks, Grade 10 (Counsel/Lawyer 1) Gabriell Hernandez-Grade 10 & Naysa Wayne Grade 11(Co-Counsel/Lawyer 2) Rachel Salazar-Aparicio, Grade 10 (Witness 1). Genesis Edwards-Grade 10 (Witness 2) Carlos Lopez-Ramirez, Grade 10, Nketchi Ekekwe, Jaylene Bright as Student Coaches, VeaFrancine Corder, Grade 9, Bailiff Phoebe Brown-Defendant/Plaintiff Kelly Shawm-Grade 11, Reliever Lawyer Huda Chaudry-Grade 9, Nahome Nonila, Grade 9 Reliever Lawyer.
As their coach, I can never be prouder.

CMIT Green School
|
Hello there, we are the CMIT Green School (GS). GS is much more than just curriculum, programming, and physical structures. It has 78 active members and works together as a team. It is a school that is committed to global sustainability in every way. A green school starts with the future in mind, creating a learning environment for students that will educate them to lead the world toward a healthier, cleaner, more sustainable future.
Last Thursday, despite the early dismissal, lead members of the team stayed and presented their achievements and current project to our principal, Ms. Gonul Ozturk. We began our journey in the middle of the school year 2018-2019 and were able to receive our awards plaque and certificate of recognition as a Certified Green School at the end of the year from the Maryland Association for Environmental & Outdoor Education (MAEOE), the institution approved by the Prince George's Department of Education and supporting Maryland State Department of Education graduation requirements and standards.
Our goals and aspirations are
(1)Enhance environmental education to achieve systemic sustainability.
(2) School-Wide awareness through students' and staff professional development.
(3) Accelerate Environmental Behavior Change
(4) Create and Celebrate Partnerships Using Student-Led Sustainable Practices
(5) create scholarship application portals to help our members get college scholarships.
At the moment, we have projects lined up, such as
(1) We are preparing to renew our Green School certification for the school year 2022–203.
(2) Working to receive Bronze, Silver, and Green Flags from the Eco-Schools-USA, the most prestigious of the Green Flag Awards, is the third of three award levels in the Eco-Schools USA program. To be eligible for the Green Flag Award, a school must follow the Seven Step Framework.
(3) working with the robotics team to create an aquaponics garden and a solar power clock garden Aquaponics delivers a consistent supply of organic, pesticide-free herbs and vegetables since the procedures are completely natural. As a result, staff and students will have easy access to nutritious and organic vegetables. At the same time, the solar clock is part of our school's beautification and reinforces for students the relationship between the Sun's motion and our concept of time.
(4) partnering on The Climate Change Action Plan. It is a group full of decision-makers, and experts, that ensure CMIT along with PGCPS meets its Climate targets.
Lastly, this year, Green began joining Envirothron. The Envirothon is a yearly competition where teams compete for recognition and scholarships by proving their understanding of environmental science and natural resource management.

Saturday Academy with Dr. Chute of St. John Hopkins University, Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Health Informatics
|
John Hopkins University, School of Medicine, and Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Health Informatics, Dr. Christopher Chute, will be visiting CMIT Saturday Academy from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon on February 12, 2022, to provide our students with hands-on knowledge on the importance of health informatics.
Because of the overwhelming number that wanted to register and attend the Physical conference, the Saturday Academy decided to have a zoom account to accommodate all those parents and students to join us Virtually. The Saturday Academy team apologizes that we can only accept 50 participants in the cafeteria room due to the COVid restrictions. If you want to attend the conference virtually, please register by your email and use the same email to join us in zoom with the following link.

If you want to pave your path in a field that combines healthcare and technology, health informatics is an ideal choice. Not only do health informatics occupations enable you to use your technical abilities to better the lives of others, but they also provide competitive income and job stability due to the industry's growing demand for competent personnel. Dr. Chute will help students explore the potential and significance of health informatics in representing COVID-19 medical data to forecast trends at the population level and discover predictors, treatments, and mitigations.
I am also pleased to inform you that Dr. Chute runs on several large national class grants funded by the National Institute of Health in the United States.
* All Physical attendees are required to have their publicity release form (No longer collecting responses).
* All Virtual attendees must register with the email they will use to attend the conference via the registration form

Art Club Printmaking
|
Studio Magic art club has been busy making our own styrofoam prints. We planned by designing our prints on paper, then put the paper against styrofoam rectangles. Then, we traced our designs into the styrofoam and created a relief printing matrix by going over the lines with a pencil. We have just started practicing printing. You can see some of the practice results here.

DEPARTMENT UPDATES

What's happening in the art room?
|
Art 1 has just completed their Spirit Drawings based on the film "Spirited Away." They developed their own, unique spirit characters and a bathtub and room to put them in.
Art 2 is in the middle of creating oil pastel macro (zoomed in) drawings of natural objects. This project is inspired by the vibrant artworks of Georgia O'Keeffe.
Art 3 is in the midst of a printmaking unit. They made styrofoam relief mandala prints inspired by the artist M.C. Escher. Now, as part of Black History Month, they are studying the linocut prints of Elizabeth Catlett. Catlett was a prominent African American printmaker who commonly focused on themes of African American oppression and empowerment in her work. Students will design their own linocut prints focusing on these same themes.
