UPCOMING EVENTS
Parent Teacher Conferences - February 16th
Parent-Teacher Conferences are open to all parents now! Parent-teacher conferences are scheduled for February 16th from 8:00 am to 10:00 am. -Please use the following website to schedule with your student's teachers. Website: cmitnorthhs.meettheteacher.com -Appointments are on a first come first serve basis. If a teacher is fully booked, there is a waiting list that you can join and if the teacher has time, he/she will set that up with you. -You have until February 15th at 3:00 pm to make or adjust your appointments. -You can use this platform on a computer, smartphone, or tablet. -When you log in, make sure to type your student's name exactly as it is in SchoolMAX. (For example, if your student's last name is Smith-Jones in SchoolMAX, Smith - Jones will not work. Make sure that the spacing and hyphen are exactly the same as SchoolMAX.) This needs to be done correctly because the platform will link your email to your student's classes and teachers. -If you have multiple students at CMIT North HS, please log in using one student's name, and then you can add the other student's teachers on the Choose Teachers section. -The platform has been upgraded and if multiple parents want to be at the same conference with a teacher, it is possible now! One parent will schedule the appointment and then that parent will have the ability to grant access to an additional parent. This is further explained in the "how to attend appointments over video call" link. -All appointments are 8 minutes per teacher per student. When you join the call, you will notice a timer at the top. Once the time is up, the video will close out. Because of this, it is extremely important that you are on time for your appointments. If after 8 minutes, you would like to speak further with that teacher, you will need to reach out via email to set up a separate time to talk. -Each time you go to the website, you will need to enter your name, email, student's name, and student's date of birth -How to attend appointments over video call: https://support.meettheteacher.com/article/803-video-parents-how-to-attend-appointments-over-video-call -If you are having issues with video appointments: https://support.meettheteacher.com/article/811-video-troubleshooting-camera-and-microphone-access

DEPARTMENT UPDATES
The English Department Celebrates Black History Month!
Throughout February the CMIT English department is celebrating Black History Month by reading poems, short stories, and novels written by African American poets and authors. From Frederick Douglass to the Harlem Renaissance and into the modern era, African American writers have made so many outstanding contributions to the literary world. Each teacher in the department is selecting his or her own readings for Black History Month. Mr. Hommel, for example, is beginning every class in February with a poem. To date, his students have analyzed the poetry of Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, Claude McKay, Gwendolyn Brooks, Rita Dove, and Maya Angelou. In Mr. Bevard's classes, students spent two days reading, analyzing, and discussing Amanda Gorman's poem "The Hill We Climb," composed for the 2021 presidential inauguration. His students are preparing to read "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?" by Frederick Douglass. The English department has also been discussing a read-in for Black History Month, so students and/or faculty who are interested may email Mr. Hommel (shommel@cmitacademy.org) and more details will be forthcoming. In the email, state the name and author of the work you would like to read, or attach a copy of your original work. (You maintain all rights in regards to your intellectual property) Lastly, and speaking of original work, congratulations to SabVea Edwards, Alexsia Tarquinii, and Masai Wray for earning top-3 recognition in the Mosaic Theater Playwriting Contest! We are very proud of your achievements as young playwrights and we look forward to cheering on your continued success.

-Mr. Hommel, English Dept. Chair shommel@cmitacademy.org
