America Recycles Day Success Fully Celebrated
|
America Recycles Day (ARD) is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States. This “Keep America Beautiful” (KAB) initiative is an annual event started in 1997 to spread the word on the importance of recycling and to educate others on how to recycle correctly.
On Friday, November 15, 2019, CMIT High School celebrated the event with exemplary participation by the Green School Team headed by Dr. Clarke. The celebration began with peer instruction. Selected students received training from “William S. Schmidt Center (Camp Schmidt)” and “The Alice Ferguson Foundation.” Two highly prestigious CMIT community partners. They provided instructions and meaningful experience on environmental awareness that enhances and reinforces skills learned in the classroom.
The selected students showcase the information by explaining to their peers what substances are biodegradable, their decomposition rate, and recognize trash items that can be recycled or reused in order to reduce our landfill usage. CMIT teachers educate students on What Goes in My PGCPS Recycling Bin?
Ms. Ozturk, our Principal, and the rest of the administrators, Mr. Avsar, Ms. Colandrea, Mr. Bayram, and the Green School Team grace the celebration by presenting the teachers with refillable whiteboard markers and air purifying peace lilies.
The art students of Ms. Gottlieb started the mural as a symbol of our commitment to a green and beautiful school. And what made the celebration extremely profound was the assembly of our students, where they recognize the importance of a clean environment at CMIT and pledge to be more aware of their actions concerning our resources in everyday life. Shannon L. Okoronkwo, recycle inspector of Prince George’s County Government, Department of the Environment, presented the importance of recycling and clean environment to the students. Saul Giron graces the show with his rendition of America the Beautiful.

Rainbow Chemistry
|
Acids and bases are important in living things because our body functions best with a specified level of acidity. Cells secrete acids and bases to maintain the proper pH for it to work. For example, every time you digest food, the acid in the stomach breaks down the food into nutrients that the body can use.
In Dr. Clarke’s biology class, students utilized the scientific method to do rainbow chemistry for them to investigate the different chemical reactions using the pH scale. Correct investigation resulted in the appearance of specific color indicators.
