This is a reminder regarding the drop off and pick up procedure at CMIT Academy (Middle and High School locations).

Please be sure to enter the parking lot and circle the building when dropping students off in the morning and picking them up in the afternoon.

Keep in mind, stopping on Sweitzer lane to pick up or drop off your student is a serious safety hazard. Please do not use this practice for the safety of our students.

Parking at CMIT Academy for Events and Games
While attending events and games at our high school building, remember to use the parking lot in the front and back of the building.

If the high school parking lot is full, please feel free to use the parking lot at the elementary school. There are stairs and lights that will lead you directly to our high school building

Please DO NOT use the parking lot of the neighboring building as this may result in towing at the car owner's expense.

The same will apply for the middle school building. If the parking lot in the front of the building is full, feel free to use the shuttle bus parking lot.

Please DO NOT use the Stantec parking lot for any reason as this may result in towing at the car owner's expense.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to the front office.

Thank you.

MS BREAKING NEWS
ITEC Applications Released Soon
Dear 8th Grade Families:

Are you interested in ITEC? It is time to apply!

ITEC stands for Information Technology Early College program. The program operates in partnership with Prince George's Community College and offers 8th grade CMIT students who are self-driven, have a strong work ethic and have a profound interest in information technology an opportunity to earn an Associate of Applied Science degree in Information Technology by the time they graduate high school.

On January 29th, Ms. Gaudette and I will be visiting the middle school to talk about academic opportunities available to 8th grade students when they enter the 9th grade at CMIT. During this presentation, students will learn more about the ITEC program and have a chance to pick up an application to Prince George's Community College. The completion of this application is the first step in applying for entry into the ITEC program. (Other steps may include writing samples, teacher recommendations, and interviews.)

Applications will be due February 9th. Students should return their application to Ms. Spence in the middle school front office.

Feel free to contact me with questions at tcolandrea@cmitacademy.org

Time to Order a Science Olympiad T-shirt
Dear CMIT Family,

I would like to thank to all Science Olympiad students who designed one or more T-Shirts for the team. When we opened the five final T-shirt designs up for voting, I did not write who designed them so as not to affect voting.
One design belongs to Dave Jose from 8th grade. Two designs belong to Kavyasri Gouda from 9th grade. The other two T-shirts were designed by Haris Chaudry from 9th grade. Congratulations! Haris and Kavyasri especially spent a lot of time to make their designs over and over, and they prepared Google Forms for voting and newsletter blurbs, too. Special thanks to them for their leadership and effort.

The winning T-shirt belongs to Haris Chaudry, and he is doing another round of leadership and organizing of T-shirt orders. Now it is time to order our T-shirts. Here is Haris' message to you!

---

We have all voted and decided upon our final design for Science Olympiad! Please follow the link below to make your payments, and you will receive your t-shirt. We need all the support for the Olympians, so please buy! Please buy your t-shirts by February 1, 2018.

Drama Club Students & Parents
Please be advised, all Drama Club students must be picked up on time (no later then 4:30pm) from the rear parking lot, rear door of classroom #120.
Tardiness is unacceptable for picking up your child after 4:30pm, once the
Drama Club has been dismissed.

It is imperative that the timeline is respected.

Only one tardiness per Drama Student is allowed, and if the pick up time is
disrespected more then once, your child will not be permitted to be a part
of the Drama Club.

For those parents picking up your child in a timely manner, I sincerely appreciate, your cooperation and support.

Sincerely,
Dr. Sullivan-Williams, Ph.D. (a.k.a. Dr. BB)

Science Olympiad Team Updates

While we are only one month away from the Science Olympiad Regionals on Saturday, February 24th at UMD, Science Olympiad students continue working diligently.

Last week, we had the Mystery Architecture final tryout. Maya Miller and Alena Nooniwal won the final game.

This week's significant event was the Towers tryout. We broke three towers and measured their efficiency. Chinyere Ikegwu's 21 gram tower held 19.2 kg amazingly, and she became the partner to previous year winner, Jasmine Wilson.

Nigel Seymour completed his hovercraft.

The Crimebusters team went on to complete experiments with our only parent coach, Mrs. Omokanwaye. Special thanks to Mrs.Omokanwaye.

I want to open a bracket here and make another call to parents to be a parent coach. Here is what a parent coach does:
1) Our team has more than 20 students, and we are using three classrooms. The easiest thing a parent do is to watch students in one of the classrooms.
2) Science Olympiad contains 23 different competitions in different science areas. A parent coach can help us with one of the events. All events do not require a deep science knowledge. (On the other hand, a parent coach with a science degree would be matchless!!)
3) A parent coach can help his/her own kid at home by reading the event rules together, watching where his/her kid is at this point, and motivating.

Science Olympiad 6th grade meetings continue on Fridays after school.
Last week students competed in Mystery Architecture. Seth and Emerson will be doing the Mystery Architecture event in the 2nd team.

Congratulations to the CMIT North PHCL-Forensic Robotic Team for their creative and authentic “robotic hand” exhibit displayed Saturday January 27, 2018 at the CLF MakerFEST. Peter Thompson, Carvengy Milfort, Hannah Tchokote, and Luchas Wright are students in chemistry and forensic science classes at CMIT North H.S., who worked collaboratively throughout the 2017-2018 school year to create and build an authentic “working” model
of a robotic hand.

Special appreciation to CMIT North High School Principal Mr. Gunes, and Vice Principals Mr. Avsar and Mrs. Colandrea, for providing material resources that made it possible for the team to build their model of the robotic hand.

Additional acknowledgements are also extended to the following CMIT North High School faculty members: Mrs. Graham, Mr. Bekiyev, Mr. Wellman, Mr. Hynes, and Ms. Smith, for mentoring and encouraging the students in their robotic research and development efforts. The PHCL Forensic Robotic Team members plan to continue their research and display the robotic hand at the USA Science and Engineering Festival April 5-8, 2018 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center located in Washington, D.C.

The students were excited to have had the opportunity to share their robotic research experiences with many parents , students, Aerospace Engneer Milton Davis, also the director of the NASA NSBE Program at CMIT North High School, and Honorable Craig Moe Mayor for the City of Laurel, Maryland.

CMIT Students Welcome Senior Medical Students Mr. Bivins and Mr.Bell

The students were delighted and inspired to consider the health care professions as future careers after listening to the senior medical student, Mr. E. Bivins and Mr. Bell, who came to speak about careers in the medical field during career day. He intends to specialize in the field of Interventional Radiology.

Interventional radiologists can treat certain conditions through the skin (percutaneously) that might otherwise require surgery. The students listened attentively as Mr. Bivins demonstrated the use of several radiological instruments such as: balloons, catheters, microcatheters, and stents. We hope the “senior/4th” year medical students, Mr. Bivins and Mr. Bell will return to CMIT North High School as guest speakers in the near future.

HS Parking Update

As soon as spaces are painted and numbered at the elementary school, we will begin to issue parking permits so students can park there. Moving forward, Ms. Gaudette will be the point of contact for parking. Please look for communication from her on this subject.

In the meantime, until students have been issued parking permits, we are requesting that they continue to park in the middle school parking lot. We are learning of more and more students parking in the high school parking lot, which is posing an issue for teachers who arrive later in the day and guests who are invited for special meetings and events. Students who are found to be parking in the high school parking lot may be towed.

We appreciate your patience and prompt response to this request.

Respectfully,
CMIT Administration

HS Uniform Clarification
Hi, CMIT Families:

We continue to have difficulties with students coming to class out of uniform. With your help, we can reduce the amount of time students are missing instruction while these issues are addressed. The most common infractions are below. Please take a moment to review them with your student.

- CMIT polos in purple or gold and khaki or navy blue bottoms are required daily with the exceptions listed below. IMPORTANT NOTE: Tops with hoods are NEVER permitted.
-- Spirit wear may be worn on Mondays and Fridays only. Spirit wear must be issued by CMIT and bear a CMIT logo. Examples include Class of XX shirts and items purchased through the PTO FanCloth Sale. Spirit wear items must conform to the PGCPS/CMIT Dress Down policy.
-- Seniors may wear their Class of 2018 tops daily.
-- Athletes may wear game day jerseys/track suits on game day as instructed by their coaches.
-- PE uniforms (including tops) may only be worn on gym days. (There are no gym classes until second semester.)

- No tops with hoods. This is true whether the garment is a CMIT garment or not. This is true whether it is a dress down day or not.

- Outerwear (other than CMIT windbreakers, fleeces and sweatshirts) may not be worn in the building at any time.

- No Crocs, slides, flip flops, slippers at any time.

This list is not all-inclusive but highlights some of the most common infractions. Please visit the CMIT website for the full uniform policy and reach out to administration if you have questions.
