We are excited to announce that we held a successful Groundbreaking Ceremony for our new High School Building on Thursday, September 15th. Representatives from CMIT North, CMIT Elementary, CLF, and the school board were in attendance. Overall, it was a momentous occasion.

The 78,000+ sq. ft. high school will be a three-story facility located near CMIT Elementary. There will be a gymnasium, an outdoor athletic field, 32 classrooms, six science labs, two computer labs, two art classrooms, a makerspace for robotics, and two resource rooms.

The facility is scheduled to open Fall of 2017.

CMIT-North offers a wide variety of clubs and activities for the students to participate in throughout the school year. Club selections will be done through CLF Portal. 6TH Annual CMIT STEM FAIR

This year, CMIT is introducing its first Maker Faire in this 6th Annual STEM Fair. STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Maker Faire is primarily designed to be forward-looking expose, showcasing persons who are exploring new forms and new technologies. But it’s not just for the novel in technical fields; Maker Faire features innovation and experimentation across the spectrum of science, engineering, art, performance and craft.

Research/Inquiry projects in any of the STEM areas are mandatory to all middle school students and all high school students are encouraged to participate to create, problem-solve, innovate and showcase their inquiry skills and creative research abilities.

All of your teachers will be involved in supporting you and parts of your project will be evaluated in multiple subject areas. This means a good project will make differences in your report card without additional effort. STEM Fair category winners (first, second and third place) will be awarded one of the following prizes: Kindle Fire HDs, Kindle Paperwhites etc. The overall STEM Fair winners (first, second and third place) will receive iPad, laptop or Kindle Fire HD. Eligible projects will represent CMIT in the Annual Prince George's Area Science Fair (in March) and other national STEM Fairs.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS AND WHAT SHOULD THE END PRODUCT LOOK LIKE?
1. You select the topic.
2. Focus on a question/problem on your topic.
3. Use Scientific Method.
4. Do your research/investigation/experiment/observations.

Saturday Academy will begin on October 1st. This free program is offered to all middle schools students. High school students taking Algebra 1 and Geometry can also register to attend. Registration is on a first come first serve basis, it opens on September 12th and closes on September 23 @ 9 pm. Please follow the link below to register.

Become a PTO Member – Sign up to become a member of PTO for $10 per family member. The dues are used to support many activities and events sponsored by the PTO. It also entitles you to voting rights during meetings.

In addition, please complete the following documents required by CMIT and Prince George's County Public Schools, and have your student return them to their first period teacher by Wednesday, September 21, 2016. These documents are important to ensure safety of all students.

The past few weeks in Physical Education, the students have been learning the fundamentals of badminton. Students have been perfecting their serves, forehand and backhand hits, and their overhead smashes. They have been partnered up for a two week long doubles tournament which is still in progress. At the end of the tournament students will see who is the king and/or queen of their class in badminton! Results are still to be determined. Here are some photos from class!

There will be an interest meeting for Boys Basketball this Monday, September 19th in Portable 6 from 3:00-3:30pm. Anyone interested in trying out for the middle school boys basketball team should be in attendance. Please arrange for a ride at 3:30pm.

The kick off event for our school-wide College Test Prep day started on Friday September 9, 2016 during the first period. We will continue the program every Friday until the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) date October 19, 2016. All high school students will be solving PSAT/SAT/ACT style questions for one period during the day. Students are also expected to work everyday for 30 minutes at home until the test date. The PSAT test date for 9th, 10th and 11th grade students is October 19, 2016 and 12th grade students will be taking their SAT/ACT tests in October and November.

We need to work as a team to make sure that students not only work at school but also practice their skills at home for 30 minutes everyday until the test date. We use Naviance Test Prep to monitor the growth and each student's progress. We plan to reward students based on their progress each week. Applications for officer positions in high school student government are available in room 160. SGA is a great extracurricular opportunity for students seeking to contribute to the school and enhance their college resumes. Positions for president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, and historian are available as well as two class representatives per grade level. Students have to be willing to meet Mondays during club hours. Applications are due by Monday, September 26th.

Ogechi has volunteered to be Physics Student Co-Teacher for Friday, Sept. 12 in her Physics class. She will take the class through the homework recitation.

Both Physics and Environmental Science classes had virtual lab/activities this past week. Labs count as assessment grades.

Ms. Cline wants to recognize Jahnae' for being "excellent" as a Teacher's Aid. Jahnae' is in AP Chemistry.

Ms. Smith's Chemistry class has been doing labs and the students are learning and putting to use their knowledge of Chemistry. See Ms. Smith's Chemistry news for more details about her classes.

Mr. Fleming reminds his students and parents that there will be homework quizzes every Friday. Students may use homework they completed throughout the week to complete homework quiz. In addition to homework quizzes, there will also be weekly quizzes on the content covered in class.

Students learned about composition by moving small handmade shapes around the "canvas" to fulfill the a prompt about repetition and the rule of thirds.

In all of my classes, we are moving right along and nearing the end in our first unit.

Algebra 1 - We have been working diligently on solving all types of equations from multistep to literal equations, and proportions. A strong hold of these skills are pivotal for moving on to the connected algebraic topics we are heading towards. There are tons of online practice resources your student can use to practice outside of class to get even better. Please encourage them to do so!

15 September to 15 October is Hispanic Heritage Month and in order learn and celebrate the Latino history and culture, students in Ms. Young's class will do historical research projects.

Students will find the rubric and directions for project in Google classroom for their class section. Students also received the information the first week of school. Students know that project sare due 23 September.

In addition to completing the textbook required chemistry lab assignments, students read and discussed science articles describing how microbubbles can be used to deliver prescribed drugs to specific disease areas in the human body. Students created their own methods enabling them to attach multiple bubbles to each other, or to another solid object, in an effort to simulate some of the research challenges involved in using microbubbles as transport vehicles for drug delivery.

One of the reading selections discussed how scientists are using microbubbles as a more efficient and effective drug delivery method. Another article explained how microbubbles can be injected into the human body to target tumor cells or cancer cells. The students had fun completing the lab activities and they enjoyed reading the research articles as well.

Dear Family:
Your 6th grade scholars have been empowered with decision making skills.
We make many decisions in our lives. Some decisions are easy to make, such as what clothes to put on in the morning and what to eat. Other decisions are harder and have serious consequences. Children are influenced to make decisions in direct and indirect ways. Examples of direct influences are being persuaded, bribed or threatened by others to do things. Examples of indirect influences are provided by advertising, the media, or the behaviors of popular or famous people. Children are notorious for making quick decisions, often without thinking about what is influencing them to make a certain choice. One of the ways to prevent children from making poor decisions is to help them understand how they are being influenced.

In class, your scholar has learned about decisions and the direct and indirect influences on his/her decisions. Your scholar shall be making a graphic organizer that depicts the various influences on his/her decisions. You might wish to ask your child about this graphic organizer.

you can help your scholar with his/her decision making skills. When your scholar wants to buy something, ask him/her what is influencing him/her to want the product. The more your child is aware of influences on decision-making, the more your scholar will be able to make decisions that are based on his/her own personal judgements and values rather than the influences of others.

The main purpose of this program is to provide your scholar(s) with the kind of knowledge and skills that will enable them to become happier and more successful adults. Also by becoming aware of the various factors promoting substance abuse and how to deal with them as by becoming more independent, self-confident and satisfied with themselves, they will be less likely to yield to pressures to smoke, use drugs, or do anything that they do not really want to do.

In Summary:
Occasional drug use frequently leads to drug abuse with both physical and psychological dependence.

People begin using drugs for many different reasons; the most common factors leading to drug use and abuse are social factors.

The process of becoming addicted to drugs involves a series of stages leading from trying commonly used substances (such as tobacco and alcohol) to one or more (illegal) drugs.

The best way of preventing drug abuse is never to start.

Rather than "calming one down," smoking serves to make a person more nervous.

Smoking elevates a person's heart rate. Regular smokng puts an extra strain on the heart and reduces endurance for physical activity.

Violence means harming others physically and emotionally. It can grow in a climate where violence is accepted. M ost people, are not violent, and the have many good reasons for staying that way.

The purpose of this lesson is to increase the student's understanding of the causes and consequences of drug abuse.

The Major Objects are, to be able to identify causes of drug use; identify the major social factors promoting drug use, and being able to describe physical and psychological dependence.

In Summarizing:
Although people get involved with tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs for many different reasons, the number one cause of drug use is social influence (particularly peer pressure).

Drug abuse or drug addition develops gradually and usually without the drug user even knowing how "hooked" he or she is until it's too late.

If one is aware of the factors associated with drug use/abuse, one can then learn how to reduce one's risk of getting into trouble with drugs.

This coming week, we will be studying the major religions of the Middle East: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Our examination of these three religions will be for an academic purpose only, so that your students can better understand the culture of this region.

8th Grade

This week, we will begin studying the 13 English colonies in America. Students will be completing a group project to help them learn about each colony. Please see Google Classroom for assignment details and due dates.
