Hello Everyone, Within the next few weeks I will be meeting with each grade level on the following topics: As per county mandate students in grades K,2, & 5th will receive their second Good Touch, Bad Touch Lesson. Each grade level will receive the lesson in the following ways: K- We will read Hands Are Not for Hitting by Martine Agassi and discuss effective social skills 2nd & 5th- We will play a kahoot game to review the important points we learned from the previous Good Touch, Bad Touch Lesson Our 2nd and 3rd graders will also have another kindness lesson. Parents please discuss with your children the importance of being kind to their peers. Students will display acts of kindness and sign a kindness contract to encourage kind behavior. Our 1st graders will continue to complete their Personal Education Plan (PEP). The PEP is an electronic tool that will follow them to high school to help students plan, with the school counselor, for high school graduation and college and career readiness. Students will be meeting with me one on one to complete the form. This will be on going with the 1st graders until they are all complete. I will also complete this form with our 4th graders. This will be conducted in a group setting. I will review the document with the students step by step in order to assist them in planning for the upcoming school year. The Kids-2- College curriculum will be implemented for 4th and 5th graders. This curriculum focuses on college and career readiness. It is a user friendly college awareness curriculum designed to make students more aware of how education impacts their future life choices. Updates from the Art Room!
Kindergarten is learning about texture and cool colors for the next couple of weeks while thinking about the saying "April showers bring May flowers!" and Earth Day. That's right, they're painting raindrops, stamping them with purple or green painted objects such as bubble wrap, and then gluing various textured objects like string, balled up paper, or bottle caps to them! It teaches them about the elements of art and environmental awareness at the same time. Any bottle caps that you can donate would be much appreciated. The first graders are bringing their knowledge of shape to their next project that involves making a fruit bowl! Last week, we did a couple of quick sketches, a strawberry is a heart, a banana is a crescent, etc. This week they are cutting those shapes out of construction paper and gluing them into a semicircle of a bowl. They are grouping warm colored fruits and cool colored fruits together to learn about their color families! The second graders are working on two projects at the same time. One is reenforcing what they learned about contour lines in their self portraits, by drawing an op art hand. They traced their hands on a piece of paper, drew straight lines with a ruler but not through their hands, and they connected their straight lines with curved lines on their hands. Their second project is bringing shapes and lines together in the real world application of designing buildings! The third grade just finished up their Cubist self portraits; they were using fractions through having to cut their paper in half so many times and didn't even know it until the question about it came up! Their next project is using shapes and lines to create some suns shining through this lion of a month! The fourth grade finished up their positive and negative masks, so it's time for them to move onto a more mathematical project using radial designs! That means that they'll have to divide their papers into fourths and make the shapes and lines in each section symmetrical to the others. Tricky, but I believe in them! Last but not least is our fifth graders! They finished up their tessellations and will now be using shapes and lines to create a nice landscape!

Let's get creative! Miss James

4th Grade
Fourth Grade Parents, All missing work packets were due today, Friday March 13, 2020. SchoolMax will be updated as we work through the large amount of missing work returned. In Reading we are 2 chapters away from finishing our novel. We will take our assessment and begin watching the movie Shiloh. We will shift into a new set of leveled novels once we’ve finished our movie viewing and final assessments. In Social Studies, students have started talking about the U.S. Economy. This week we will dive deeper into the four sectors of economy, how they work indepently, and how they impact one another. The Math we will be discussing 4.NF.4 - multiplying fractions by a whole number, improper fractions, and mixed numbers. Our next assessment is scheduled for March 26, 2020 In Science we are discussing waves, and will have a vocabulary quiz on Friday March 20, 2020. Please review the following terms: amplitude, crest, opaque, reflection, translucent, transparent, trough, volume, wave, and wavelength. In Health we are discussing disease prevention and control.

P.E. weekly review
Dear Parents and Guardians, This week in P.E. class all grades were learning about shooting a basketball. The younger students learned the 4 basic elements and the older grades focused more on the body mechanics and reasoning behind why the ball is shot the way it is and the physics behind the elements. The younger grades practiced before playing my version of knock out and the older kids got to play a game called hot spots. Myself and the other CARTS teachers are doing our parts to integrate more math and reading vocabulary into our lessons in order to review more and grow the repetition of facts and exposure from these areas to help with the MCAP tests coming up in April. PLEASE LOOK FOR MORE INFORMATION REGARDING THE TEACHERS vs. STUDENTS BASKETBALL GAME INCENTIVE AFTER THE TESTING WINDOW IS COMPLETED.

Keeping Healthy in Kindergarten
Happy Friday! Many parents have voiced concerns about what actions are taking place in Kindergarten to keep children healthy and safe during this time. Please know that ALL of us at CMIT South Elementary School are doing our best to keep students safe. In Kindergarten, Ms. Johnson started a practice where students come in to the classroom in the morning and wash their hands immediately. Students then get a stamp on the back of their hands. Students are encouraged to take time to wash hands properly. If the stamp comes off, students get another one. Students earn prizes/points for washing their hands properly. The Kindergarten teachers are also working hard on getting a Google Classroom set up for our students, just in case we need continue our learning online. We also will be using Khan Academy and ABCMouse to help with our continuing learning. Please, if your child is not feeling well keep them home. If you have any questions, please reach out to us.

5th Grade Trip Cancelled
Unfortunately, the 5th grade trip to the National Geographic Museum has been cancelled. This won't stop us from learning about Jane Goodall though! We will be watching a documentary about Jane Goodall in class as well as doing some technology-based explorations of the Gombe Stream National Park where Goodall first made a name for herself. Also, just a quick reminder; please remember to wash your hands thoroughly with warm water for at least 20 seconds (sing happy birthday twice as a guide!) and don't send any sick students into school!
