Parents, Staff:
The media has been focusing on the measles outbreak across the country. As you may know, the only way to prevent Measles transmission, is through vaccination. Parents, please ensure your child has updated vaccinations based on their age. Below, you will find some facts on the Measles.
Measles is a contagious vaccine-preventable viral infection easily spread to unvaccinated persons through coughing, sneezing and secretions from the mouth. Early measles symptoms of high fever, runny nose, cough and red, watery eyes typically develop 10 to 14 days after exposure to the virus.
Usually, one to four days after the early symptoms, a red rash appears on the face and spreads to the rest of the body. A person with measles is contagious beginning four days before the rash appears until four days after the rash begins.
Those who are most at risk of complications from measles infection are: pregnant women, infants less than 1 year old and those who are immune compromised.

MAKERFEST is NEXT WEEK! Join us on Saturday, May 4th for the STEAM Extravaganza!
|
Held on the first Saturday in May, this will be the 3rd Annual MakerFEST, CLF's yearly STEAM Festival celebrating our community's inner genius! CLF schools are now eight programs and six institutions across the State of Maryland serving over 3,200 students K-12! MakerFEST invites these students to participate with staff, parents and our wider CLF STEM community partners to feel encouraged to exhibit and enjoy all the day's inventions, artwork, personal projects, experiments, robots, wild creations, noble attempts, fine solutions to typical problems, and makers making so much more!
CLF will also have volunteer opportunities available for anyone who wants to help build the best MakerFEST ever!
To register for an exhibition space visit
https://www.clfadvancedstudies.org/makerfest
For volunteer opportunities visit
https://goo.gl/forms/y1qs5zfo8OPOuRo92
This year, the first Saturday in May happens to coincide with May 4th, often celebrated by fans of the widely popular Star Wars franchise.
We fundamentally feel obligated since astronomy, space exploration fit all too well into the MakerFEST concept, so Community Partnerships is also encouraging all exhibitors to share their project progress with @CLF_CLF on twitter or @ChesapeakeLighthouseFoundation on Facebook with the hashtag #MayTheFourthBuildWithYou.
Until next update, May The Fourth Be With You!

Grade Level Greatness
|
|
Welcome back to Kindergarten!
|
Welcome back! We hope you had a great break. We are nearing the end of our year. We still have more to do. During May we will be testing the children with their reading levels. If you have questions please contact your child's teacher.
Science: This week in science we talked more about helping the environment. We discussed recycling items, reusing them, and reducing the things we use. Students did an excellent job in sorting objects and pictures depending on if we could reuse them, recycle them or reduce our use of it. Students have become very aware about the ways we can keep our earth clean and safe! Next week we will begin talking about the resources we use!
Math: In math this week we worked on measuring things by various attributes. We discussed measuring things based on weight, height, length, and more. We have learned a lot about scales, rulers, how to measure things using nonstandard measurement and more! Students did a great job at describing things based on their measurable attributes along with measuring them!
Social Studies: This week in Social Studies we identified the differences between basic needs and wants. We learned that needs are things we must have to live such as food, clothing, and shelter.
ELA: Welcome back. Students are becoming excellent writers. Students are continuing to use nouns and verbs in their writing and identify them. Students will continue to perfect the writing process which includes, finger spacing, using correct form of letters, end marks and capitalization. Students are gaining strength with sight words.

Butterfly Garden & Release
|
Dear Parents & Guardians,
Today we was an exciting day because we released butterflies that grew from caterpillars in the Makers' Lab. Thank you to all who volunteered and spent time bringing in plants to add to our garden. Also, 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders grew beans & peas from seeds which are also a great addition to our garden! PG Parks was kind enough to volunteer and they gave some zinnia, marigold, parsley and dill plants.
We will work together to perfect the butterfly garden as more materials are brought in!
If you have any questions feel free to contact me at zozturk@cmitsouthes.org

4th Grade
|
Parents,
We have wrapped up our reading testing this week and MCAP Math testing will continue next week on April 30 and May 1. The 4th grade Honor Roll assembly will be May 6, 2019 from 9:30 am-10:15 am. Though we have had a great deal of testing this week, students were able to conduct a Science experiment (pictured) and Language Arts immigration activity. Encourage students to continue their hard work next week and remind them to get a good night's’ rest and eat a healthy breakfast as we close out our MCAP testing on Tuesday and Wednesday. Have great weekend. We're looking forward to another awesome week.

2nd & 3rd Grade Art
|
Hello Parents! Welcome back from the break! Now that we are in the final stretch, there will be a lot of projects coming home toward the end of the year.
Lately in 2nd and 3rd grade art class, students have begun a new art project. The focus of this project is to learn all about EMPHASIS! Students analyzed a teacher prototype to find out what the main focus was. We decided that the reflection in the sunglasses was the main focus and learned that using different art materials for different areas of an artwork will draw attention to a specific spot - in other words, emphasis! In the next weeks to come, students will draw a self-portrait of themselves wearing sunglasses and depict a special place in the reflection of the glasses.

Parents/ Guardians,
Beautification project
We are embarking on a beautification project of our outdoor space this spring. The learning environment, both inside and outside should be conducive to learning. In this regard, we are requesting help from you-our partners to donate potted plants, including rosebuds. Through the PTO, we would like to plant these into our beautiful garden. Today, students released their butterflies, and they were so excited about this activity.
PARCC
Students are still in testing mode. Please encourage daily and weekend reviews. Students who have missed the taking the tests due to days out will do the makeup.
Thanks to all the parents who sent in flowers these past two days-you guys are phenomenal. The dates have been extended to all of next week to provide you guys with an opportunity to give to the garden.
Thanks for supporting our scholars each and every day.
