We honor the Veterans for Veterans day
|
On November 11th, people across the country paused to recognize those who have served in the military to support and solidify our rights and freedoms. At CMIT Elementary, we have marked this day with each others in various small and collective ways so that we are continually mindful of the sacrifices made for our freedom.
To all of you who have served in the military, we honor and thank you for all that you do and have done.

Students of the Month PAINT & SNACK!
|
We have reinvented how we celebrate our Students of the Month!
On Thursday, November 10th our October students of the month enjoyed cookies and a juice box during a one hour creativity session with Mrs. Breckenridge. The students allowed their creativity to emerge on to canvases with a mod podge collage of various materials, patterns, shapes, textures and designs that they ordinarily would not get to use in their Art class. Their beautiful works of art will be showcased in the Front Office hallway. Please be sure to take a look at our gallery of art wall during your next visit.

Lottery Opens for PGCPS PCS for 2017-2018 on November 1
|
Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) public charter schools will be accepting online applications for the 2017-2018 school year starting November 01, 2016.
All Prince George’s County families can apply to a public charter school, as there are no attendance boundaries assigned to charter schools. Interested families must complete the online application for each child they wish to enroll.
Prospective public charter school families must ensure that the students has a PGCPS student ID to apply. If your student does not have a PGCPS ID, please visit your neighborhood school to get one.
This is particularly important for your 5th grade families. If they are interested in continuing to CMIT North or CMIT South as 6th graders- they must re-enter the lottery for the specific school of choice. This is a new provision as a result of the recent change in the Maryland Charter School Law that allows "only 35%" of the currently enrolled 5th graders to automatically enroll as continuing 6th students at CMIT North or CMIT South. Therefore, CMIT Elementary parents of 5th grade students are strongly encouraged to apply to the 6th grade program at CMIT North and/or CMIT South to ensure they receive a spot.
****Mrs. White will hold an information session on November 17, 2016 at 7 pm at CMIT NORTH, to address questions and concerns around the Lottery change. The location has changed to CMIT NORTH. **********

Student of the Month Spotlight Our Student Spotlight this week is Beruk Yiheyis from Ms. Santiago's class. Beruk loves to go to Music and enjoys his Language Arts centers every day. He is a very neat writer and is awesome at Math. Congratulations on being Student of the Month, Beruk! Parent Conferences Thank you to the parents that came to parent conferences on Friday, November 11. We are thankful for your dedication and support, and we look forward to continuing the year working as a team to further your child's growth in Kindergarten! Upcoming Events On Tuesday, November 22, we will be creating "disguises" for turkeys to keep them from getting eaten on Thanksgiving! We will have construction paper, glue, and crayons, but we would love more items! If you can, please send items like feathers, cotton balls, beads, or other craft items that students can use to create their turkey disguises. Check out this link to see examples of what we will be doing: https://www.pinterest.com/handmadekidsart/turkey-disguise-project/This week in Kindergarten... English Language Arts We will read the story "A Bed for Winter" about a little mouse that is looking for a bed to sleep in during the cold. We will be discussing sequence - retelling a story in order, working with initial and medial /i/, and learning more about adjectives that can describe opposite. Mathematics We will be learning about shapes! We will look at different shapes and identify them by their attributes. Additionally, we will create a fox using a shape! Please note: students should still practice finding 1 and 2 fewer. Be sure to get some extra practice at home! An easy way to incorporate this at home is during dinner prep or at the grocery. For example, "I have eight apples, but I need 2 more (or 2 fewer). How many will that be? Can you do that for me?" This will help make Subtraction and Addition much easier later in the year! Science Students will be learning about matter and mixtures throughout the month of November. We will look at mixtures and how temperature can cause matter to change. High Frequency Words Here are our sight words we have learned so far. Remember to practice reading and writing these words regularly! (When reading at home, if you see these words, have your child point it out!) All of the words we will learn this year are available on our grade level website under "Sight Words." I, am, little, to, a, have, is, the, we, my, like, he, for REMINDERS - Homework is due on FRIDAY each week. Remember to look for their new homework packet on Fridays. Homework that is not submitted by the due date will be given a ZERO. - Please read regularly! Remember that just 20 minutes a day can boost your child's reading levels! - If you would like to chaperone any future field trips, you must have a fingerprint background check. This can be obtained from the Fingerprint office at the county building 14201 School Lane, Upper Marlboro, MD Monday-Friday from 8:00am-3:45pm. For more information or to contact the fingerprinting office, please look at the fingerprint office website: http://www1.pgcps.org/fingerprinting/- Please remember to send an extra pair of uniform clothes to keep in your child's cubbie at school in the event of accidents or spills. - Uniform is enforced daily, including uninterrupted black shoes. Group Project - States of Matter (Due Nov. 21st)
|
As 5th graders complete their lessons on the States of Matter (Solid, Liquid, Gas, and Plasma) students are assigned a group project that is designed to introduce them to the “2016 Nobel Physics Prize” winners, David J. Thouless, Duncan Haldane, and J. Michael Kosterlitz. The three Physicists were awarded the prize for their contribution to the field of Quantum Physics. The three used Mathematics in their discoveries of rare forms of Matter that will be used to advance Technology and/or Medicine. Using a hands-on activity, the pictures above shows 5th graders applying their knowledge of Proportions, Mixtures, and Properties. With that, students will submit a One-page research paper along with a model (due, Nov. 21st) that demonstrates the Physicists discoveries of: Topology (fluent shapes of ATOMS) Topological Phase Transitions (how substance changes properties) Topological Phases of Matter (how matter changes in layers) Practical Application (future usage. Example: Quantum Computers) Scholars | Parents – The second quarter has begun. Please ensure that your child stays on track to avoid stress at the end of the quarter. Visual Arts- Artist of the Month and Updates
|
Our focus artist for the month of November is Romero Britto. He is a Brazillian-born internationally known artist. He uses "bright colors and bold lines" to create a visual language that communicates "hope and happiness" to viewers from around the world. It unifies the viewers by using subject matter that is easy to relate to and is often inspiring. He is a strong "believer in the role of an artist as an agent of positive change. Romero Britto is committed to developing and supporting the role art will continue to play in world issues." http://www.britto.com/ It is almost time to take down the oh so popular "Why do you PIKACHOOSE to make art?" Bulletin board. I will leave it up for parent conferences on November 11th, so please feel free to stop by and check out some of the responses! This was an extra activity that students could do at home or when they finished their projects. I will have a collaborative art project that you can drop in and add to in the 11th! Our next school-wide bulletin board will be showcasing art that students make at home and bring in. (Art that you make for fun/on your own. I already have 3 works to hang and I haven't even announced it yet!)
