Happy Thanksgiving!!!
|
CMIT Families,
We have so much to be thankful for. We are still here weathering this pandemic and succeeding. We have had very minimal Covid-19 cases due to our community working together. We have students successfully learning virtually and in-person and we were named the 3rd Best Charter Elementary School in the state of Maryland by the U.S. News and World Report. We are so awesome-Together! Thank you for your partnership and dedication.

Week of November 29- December 3rd
|
We have reached the end of another month and it seems the school year is flying by. Teachers have created small groups for math and reading and are starting to work with those small groups during the week. Instruction during these times is based on the needs of the students in these groups.
As we move into colder weather, make sure that your scholar is dressed appropriately for the weather. We will have recess as long as the temperature is above 32 degrees and the weather permits. Make sure to label all clothing items with name and grade if possible. Make sure you are also labeling lunch boxes, pencil boxes, computers, headphones, charges, etc. Labeling your scholars will help ensure they make their way back to them. Reinforce the importance of your scholar being responsible and keeping track of their items.
Please have your scholar put on their coats and zip them up. Also, practice how to fix the sleeves when they are inside out. This will help to ensure that we do not lose recess time or are late for dismissal as teachers are spending a great deal of time doing these activities.
Make sure that devices are charged as they are used daily in class. Students may not be able to do classroom activities if their device is not working.
We are going to start giving the DRA for students who were above the 60 percentile on the fall reading MAP. The DRA will allow teachers to determine those scholars reading levels and the scholars ability to comprehend what they have read and make real world connections.
This week in ELA we will:
-Learn digraphs /sh/ and /ch/ and sight words: they, you, do
-Learn antonyms
-Use words first, next, last
-Review adjectives
This week in Social Studies we will:
-Continue learning about state and national symbols
-Learn about American heroes
This week in Math we will:
-Review Topic 5 vocabulary
-Review comparing numbers and groups up to 10
-Take the Topic 5 Assessment
This week in Science we will:
-Continue learning about solids, liquids, and gas
-Review the 5 senses and matter
-Take the Topic Assessment

January 3 - First Day back from Winter break
Activities you can do with your child to practice the skills for this week:
Making Words with Consonant Blends. Have an adult isolate the sounds in a word. You blend the sounds together and say the word. Example: An adult says, “The sounds in the word are /br/… /u/… /sh/”. You blend the sounds together and say, “Brush!” Continue playing using other words such as clap, strong, swim, frost, blend, drum, grapes, plum, cream, etc. Note to parent: When you are isolating the sound, say the consonant blends together as one sound. Example: /spl/…/a/…/sh/. Extension: After you have played the game orally, have an adult write the words on a piece of paper, you blend the sounds of the letters together and read the words.
Creating Complete Sentences. Have an adult help you generate a sentence by asking you questions. Who do you want the sentence to be about? (Gabe). What did he/she do? (ate). How did he/she do it? (slowly). Where? (in the kitchen). When? (at dinner time). Why? (because he didn’t like his food). Put the sentence together. (Gabe ate slowly in the kitchen at dinnertime because he didn’t’ like his food.) Once you have said the sentence a few times, have an adult ask you who, what, how, when, where, and why questions. For example: Who was our sentence about? What did he/she do? Extension: Switch the sentence around. Does it still make sense? (In the kitchen at dinnertime, Gabe ate slowly because he didn’t like his food.)
Rolling Subtraction. You will need dice for this activity. Pick a number such as 20 or 10. Roll the dice and take that many away from 10 or 20. Example: 10-6=4 or 20-6=14. Keep playing until it is no longer fun. Explain to an adult how you solved the math problem. Extension: Do the same activity subtracting 3 or more numbers. Example: 20-1-4=15.

We had a terrific (short) twelfth week in Second Grade!
We hope everyone is having a restful break!
Next week, we will continue Unit 2 in reading, titled, "Nature’s Wonders." The big question for the unit is "What patterns do we see in nature?" Throughout the week, we will focus on informational text. The weekly question is, "What patterns can we see on a prairie?" The spelling pattern will be long a: ai, ay, ea. In Math, we will continue topic 5. This topic covers subtracting within 100 using strategies.
Updates:
It is HIGHLY recommended that students practice their basic addition and subtraction facts with flashcards regularly at home.
If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher via ClassDojo.
Have a terrific weekend and we will see everyone on Monday!

In Reading, they will be on Unit 2: Week 3. They will be focused on informational text. The skill they will work on is Analyzing Text Structures. They review r-controlled vowels and irregular and plural nouns. New words will be given out on Monday for spelling. It will be named Weird Friends Spelling Word List.
In Social Studies, students will be continuing Chapter 2, Lesson 3: Economic Choices. Second quarter is here, and we are excited to start the quarter fresh!
Please make sure students press turn in when turning in their work. Please note that we follow the grading policy for PGCPS. Please look over the policy. Students are required to fill out the make-up form BEFORE attempting to redo the assignment (located in Google Classroom). Also, teachers have to approve the student before they do the assignment because not all assignments are eligible for make-up. Please express to your scholar the importance of turning in their own work on time. If they have not attempted to complete the assignment and it is late, it will NOT be accepted, per the PGCPS Grading Policy. Parents will have until Wednesday to request a redo of an assignment. Resubmissions must be submitted by the following Sunday. If an assignment is not eligible for a redo, teachers will put "not eligible for redo" in the assignment description.
Class Dojo is our main form of communication. Please join your scholar’s homeroom teacher’s Class Dojo. Please check Class Dojo for any updates and new information to be shared. If you would rather use email as your main source of communication, please tell your scholar’s teacher. Lastly, please be sure to check SchoolMax for all graded assignments. All students should be bringing their school devices with them to school daily. Have a great week!

What's Happening Next Week
|
The Fourth Grade Team would like to wish all of our parents and scholars a Happy Thanksgiving. We are so thankful to have the opportunity to be a part of your scholar's educational journey. We hope that everyone will take the time over break to rest and spend quality time with family.
Next week in Reading, students will be analyzing text structures and making predictions on informational text. In Social Studies, we will be studying the responsibilities of the three branches of government. In Math, students will continue using strategies and properties to divide by 1-Digit Numbers. Please encourage your scholar to work on memorizing their multiplication facts. In Science, students will be learning how to distinguish between renewable and nonrenewable energy sources and be able to give examples of renewable energy sources.
Please check SchoolMax weekly to stay abreast of your scholar's grades in all academic areas. Students can request a re-do of an assignment using the Google Form that is posted in Google Classroom. Only assignments that have been assigned or entered in SchoolMax within the last week can be redone unless noted otherwise. Please have your scholar complete one form for each redo request. Once the form has been submitted, your scholar's teacher will give out additional information. If students are granted a redo, the assignment(s) must be completed within 3 days from the date assigned.
Please encourage your scholar to complete assignments in a timely fashion. Not using the time given to complete assignments will result in falling behind and it will be very hard to catch up.
Just a friendly reminder that ClassDojo is the best way to contact us. We are available from 7:55 a.m. - 2:55 p.m.
