It’s Not In To Be Out of School – #PGCPSAttendanceMatters
|
When it comes to attendance: every day counts! Did you know just two days out of school a month (about 18 days a year) can add up to 10 percent of the school year missed? Parent and guardians should take note of changes to PGCPS attendance policies and tips on ways to keep absences at minimum.
Our THEME:
It’s Not In To Be Out of School – #PGCPSAttendanceMatters.
Our GOAL:
Our goal is for every student to attend school every day, ON TIME!
See attachment for Parental tips on how you can take action.

Week of September 23rd
|
We are steadily moving along in learning both the school wide and classroom procedures. The kindergarten classes did a great job with their first fire drill.
Next week, we will work on both new and previously taught skills. In ELA, we will learn about story sequencing and learn new high frequency words: the and little.
In math, we will finish off Topic 1 by learning ways to make numbers 1-5 and construct arguments. On Thursday, we will take the Topic 1 assessment.
As the weather is chilly in the morning and students are now wearing jackets and sweaters, it is important that names are in all clothing items in case they are misplaced. If you have not done so, please send a change of clothes. We want to ensure that all students are comfortable in their own clothing should an accident occur.
Again, we are in our assessment window and the students are being assessed on a number of items. To ensure their best performance, we ask that they have a good nights sleep and a good breakfast.

We just had a great week starting curriculum in second grade!
Next week, we will be continuing our reading unit on exploration! The question of the week next week will be, "What can we learn by exploring space?" Throughout the week, we will focus on main idea and details, as well as text structure. The spelling pattern for List A next week will be long vowels VCe. In math, we will be continuing Topic 1: Fluently add and subtract within 20. In social studies, we are covering the topic of families.
We are currently planning our first field trip. Please be on the lookout for a message on ClassDojo from your child's teacher for more information. Each class is looking for chaperones. Chaperones must be fingerprinted and have their background check with the county.
As a reminder, it is recommended to be practicing basic addition and subtraction facts with flashcards regularly at home.
As always, if you have any questions please reach out to your child's teacher via ClassDojo.
Have a great weekend and we will see everyone on Monday!

Next Week in Third Grade
|
We are off to a great start and is looking forward to an awesome year.
In Math, students will be learning multiplication. In Science, students will be learning about extreme weather.
In Reading, students will continue monitoring their inner conversations and learn how to use fix-up strategies to maintain good comprehension of a text. In Writing, we will continue looking at the Writing Process and effective ways to collect our thoughts and ideas. In Social Studies, we will discuss the three types of communities.
We will begin our MAP testing in Reading & Math next week.
Please check your scholar's folder nightly, as graded work and important papers will be sent home periodically. Homework is also assigned on the first day of the week. Scholars receive homework in Math/Science and Reading.
Scholars are encouraged to bring in a reusable water bottle to keep near their desk/table to help minimize frequent trips to the water fountain during class. Scholars have limited time with teachers and we would like to maximize our instruction time by having all scholars present for instruction. Please ensure that your scholar's name is on the bottle so it can be returned if it gets lost.
Friendly reminders...
-The half day scheduled for September 27th has been changed to a full day with schools closed for students.
-Check Schoolmax weekly to monitor your scholar's progress in all subject areas

Positive Childhood Experiences May Buffer Against Health Effects Of Adverse Ones
|
Hello Tigers' Den!
I often find myself dialoguing with the children with which I work, about the fact that we can each experience the same event quite differently from one another. These conversations open up such fascinating portholes of family, faith, culture and imagination... shaping our Tigers and giving context to their beliefs. More so, it is the culmination of these momentary exposures and experiences, that are the foundation upon which their character and true self if being built. I invite you to read this article, and reflect on your own childhood, the experiences that shaped your life, and then decide to do something today in a direct effort to provide positivity for child :)
Positive Childhood Experiences May Buffer Against Health Effects Of Adverse Ones:
"Well, these are experiences as lived and recalled by the person, which is what the brain and the body and emotions are responding to and reinforcing. So even if someone else might look in and say, 'You didn't have adversity' or 'You had lots of nurturing as a child,' it's really what we took in and built our beliefs and identity around, and that has a big impact on us."

Tigers in grades 1 and 2 are working on keeping a steady beat, and listening to find how many beats are in a measure. We're having fun showing the beat with our bodies! Kindergarten Tigers are working on our four different voice types: whisper, talk, shout, and sing.
