HS Homecoming / Spirit Week
|
Please see the attached flyer for information about our upcoming Spirit Week! High School students ONLY are encouraged to show their school spirit by dressing according to the theme that was selected for each day. Spirit Week will last from October 24th through October 28th and will culminate with the Homecoming Dance on Saturday, October 29th. As a reminder, this is not a dress down day and any student who chooses not to participate in Spirit Week is expected to wear their school uniform. AACPS Dress Code Policies still apply to Spirit Week attire.
I'd also like to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU to all of the families who have already purchased decorations off our Amazon Wish List or signed up to bring food/beverages to the Homecoming Dance. There are still a few items on our wishlist if you are interested in donating. We also have some spots remaining on our Sign-Up Genius.
On behalf of the entire Student Leadership Team, I'd like to express our gratitude for the incredible community here at CSP and the support you have shown for our students. This Homecoming Dance and Spirit Week would not be possible without you and your generous contributions!

Repeat-Free School
|
Hi CSP Parents,
Please see below regarding details on Chesapeake Science Point's NO REPEAT policy. If you have questions and/or concerns regarding this matter, please reach out to your child's school counselor.
CSP continues to provide a rigorous and quality education to all students. It has always been our goal to improve upon past practices, find new ways to engage students and make learning something students enjoy. We also believe that high school students need to put forth that same effort in order to become successful adults; therefore, CSP is Repeat Free. If a student receives an E in a required high school course, the class will have to be repeated in an alternate program such as summer school, evening school and twilight school. These programs are available for students to make up credits in courses that they were not successful in the first time; classes at CSP are for students taking them for original credit. If a student does not make up the failed class in one of these alternative programs, there is a chance that we will not be able to schedule the student for the classes required for graduation and the student will have to take classes at CSP for more than four years.

2022-2023 ACT & SAT REGISTRATION DATES & INFO
|
Hi Juniors & Seniors!
It’s no secret that most college applications require you to submit your SAT or ACT score, making taking the exam an absolute must. In addition to it being a requirement, colleges and universities receive thousands of applications every year. The scores on the SAT and ACT allow them to narrow down the playing field and make decisions on acceptance.
In addition to your college applications, your SAT and ACT scores can be used to apply for scholarships. These are sometimes merit based scholarships, granted directly from your choice of college during the application process. Others may be from local, state, or regional programs where your grades, academic achievements, and score affect your eligibility.
We wanted to stress the importance of taking the SAT and/or ACT more than once. Studies show that students typically receive a higher score the second time they sit for the test. It would be most beneficial to take the SAT and/or ACT your junior year, then again your senior year. If you receive free or reduced lunch, you qualify for a fee waiver. The counselors have them available in their offices.
Please see attachment for 2022-23 testing dates. You may register for the SAT on collegeboard.org.
See your counselor with any additional questions.

Howard University STEM Program
|
Seniors!
Howard University reached out requesting your Counseling Department to nominate a senior for the Karsh Stem Scholars Program. Please review the information below. If you meet the critiera and you are interested in being nominated for this program, please reach out to Mrs. Siwicki.
The Karsh STEM
Scholars Program (KSSP) is designed to attract and prepare high-achieving high school students for careers in STEM. Students who are selected for the program are expected to ultimately pursue, a PhD, or a combined MD/PhD. Students are required to major in a STEM-related discipline. The purpose of the KSSP is to challenge students through rigorous preparation and to create an environment/community of interdependent scholars who are focused on academic excellence. The program will also focus on building a global perspective to prepare its students to live, prosper and contribute to a world that is increasingly diverse and global in nature.
The KSSP presents an opportunity for academically talented students interested in STEM fields to become thinkers, researchers, educators, and leading practitioners. Howard University is a leader in producing Black STEM PhDs. However, according to the research conducted by the American Institutes for Research, Black students complete doctoral degrees in STEM fields overall at disproportionately low rates. This program will expand and extend the reach of Howard University’s leadership role in producing more students immersed in science, technology, engineering and mathematics that will change the landscape in higher education.
The Karsh STEM Scholars Program will incorporate key components such as mentoring, tutoring, in-group support, high expectations, financial support, personal advising and counseling, summer bridge, family support and study groups, which research has shown leads to student success in such programs. To be considered, students must have an overall grade point average of 3.30 or higher, at least a “B” average in college-preparatory science, and be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident. For the 2022-23 application cycle, SAT and/or ACT test scores are optional when applying for the 2022-23 admissions cycle (Cohort 7). Students who were able to take the SAT/ACT and would like to submit their scores may choose to do so.
