Youth Engagement through Science Smithsonian Internship Opportunity for Grades 9-11
|
Applications are now open for the 2022 Youth Engagement through Science (YES!) program at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History!
YES! is a highly competitive, paid internship program that connects Washington, DC metro area teens with Smithsonian collections, experts, technology, and training. The program provides youth from populations that are traditionally or historically underrepresented in science careers an opportunity to engage in an immersive, hands-on experience and assist them in achieving the goal of attending college. Since 2010, YES! has immersed teens in science research across the Smithsonian and exposed them to a variety of STEM careers by giving them an opportunity to work side-by-side with Smithsonian science staff, researchers, and educators.
We plan to conduct the 2022 YES! internship in person at the National Museum of Natural History. Interns will be expected to follow all COVID-19 safety protocols. In the event of complications due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2022 YES! internship may become partially or entirely virtual. If this happens, we will communicate any changes with you.
Applicants must:
Be between the ages of 14-19 and currently enrolled in 9th - 11th grade
Be US citizens or US permanent residents
Live in the Washington, DC metropolitan region (DC, MD, or VA)
Have an interest in science and communicating science to the public
Be able to participate in the full YES! Program from June - November (see application for detailed program dates)
Be fully vaccinated against COVID-19

Early Dismissal / Late Arrival days
|
There are several two-hour early dismissals and late arrival days worked into the calendar this year.
On two-hour early dismissal days, all car riders will exit the school building no later than 1:05 pm. Parents must pick their children up on time as there will be no supervision outside. The two-hour early dismissals are typically planned so that staff can participate in professional development.
On two-hour late arrival days, all car riders are to be dropped off between 10:00-10:15 am. Students are to be in class in their seats and ready to start the day at 10:20 am.
There is a copy of the two-hour late arrival and early dismissal schedules attached for your reference.

Visitors Must Have Appointment
|
Given that we remain in a pandemic and our focus must be on the instruction of our students, visitors to our school will be permitted only on a limited basis and only by appointment. We ask that families and community members work with us to help fulfill our main goal: to keep the school open and fully functioning in the safest manner possible throughout the school year.
● If you need to schedule an appointment and are unsure whom to contact, please email Ms. Obrien AOBRIEN@MYCSP.ORG, and she will assist you. As much as we miss you
all visiting the building, we are unable to honor that request at this time.
● If you are visiting the building, you must park in a parking space. Please do not park on the curb outside the main entrance.

Repeat-Free School
|
Hi CSP Parents,
Please see below regarding details on Chesapeake Science Point's NO REPEAT policy. If you have questions and/or concerns regarding this matter, please reach out to your child's school counselor.
CSP continues to provide a rigorous and quality education to all students. It has always been our goal to improve upon past practices, find new ways to engage students and make learning something students enjoy. We also believe that high school students need to put forth that same effort in order to become successful adults; therefore, CSP is Repeat Free. If a student receives an E in a required high school course, the class will have to be repeated in an alternate program such as summer school, evening school and twilight school. These programs are available for students to make up credits in courses that they were not successful in the first time; classes at CSP are for students taking them for original credit. If a student does not make up the failed class in one of these alternative programs, there is a chance that we will not be able to schedule the student for the classes required for graduation and the student will have to take classes at CSP for more than four years.

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION SITE - GOINGMERRY, HOW TO SET UP ACCOUNT
|
JUNIORS & SENIORS!
Scholarships and grants are helpful ways to fund your college education. They provide you with free money that can go towards tuition or other educational expenses.
To find and apply for scholarships, sign up for Going Merry ( https://www.goingmerry.com) -- it’s free! Going Merry has thousands of national, regional, and local scholarships. There are also opportunities for every grade level, from freshmen to seniors.
To sign up, go to: https://app.goingmerry.com/sign-up#students
You can also download the Going Merry mobile app (and sign up that way) on iOS or Android.
Here are some reasons why I recommend Going Merry above other scholarship sites:
Scholarship bundles: You can apply to multiple scholarships using one application and the same essay prompt.
Vetted scholarships: The Going Merry team periodically reviews every scholarship listing, to ensure the scholarship program is still active and the information is correct.
Personal matching: Once signed up, you’ll answer a few questions to fill out a basic profile, and then get matched to scholarships that fit your background, academics, interests, etc.
Clear organization: You can shortlist favorites and get deadline reminders about them. All drafts and applications are saved, and you’ll get updates on the scholarships you’ve applied to.
Direct, auto-filled applications: You can apply to many scholarships directly on the site (with forms helpfully pre-filled).
Financial aid applications: Seniors can also submit the FAFSA® through Going Merry, using their more user-friendly version of the government form, which they call “the FAFSA® Made Easier.”
Happy applying!

Johns Hopkins ED Application Info
|
SENIORS - IF YOU APPLIED ED TO JOHNS HOPKINS, PLEASE READ THIS EMAIL SENT FROM THE DEAN OF ADMISSIONS:
As we approach our Early Decision I (EDI) notification date, I wanted to share a few important updates we hope will be helpful.
When will Hopkins notify EDI applicants of their admissions decision?
Decisions will be released on Friday, December 10 at 3 p.m. EST.
Students should have received an email to set up access to their decision portal. If they have not yet done so, please encourage them to check the email they used to apply for instructions.
If they have trouble setting up their account or did not receive the email, they can reach out to applyhelp@jhu.edu.
What does this year’s EDI applicant pool look like?
This year, we received over 2,500 EDI applications. We admitted 520 students in EDI, which is 40% of our anticipated class of roughly 1,300 first-year students.
We will continue our test-optional policy for our Early Decision II and Regular Decision application cycle this year. Any information on future cycles will be communicated at a later date.
What do I need to know if I have an admitted EDI student?
Admitted students will need to officially accept their offer and submit their deposit by January 15, 2022.
If financial aid is a concern, please encourage your student or their family to reach out to our financial aid office right away.
We will ask for mid-year transcripts for matriculating students when they become available later this year.
We will be hosting virtual events for EDI admitted students in January. Registration will be available on the admissions portal at mydecision.jhu.edu.
What do I need to know if one of my EDI students was denied?
Given the volume of competitive applications in EDI this cycle, we were not able to admit many talented students. Admissions committee decisions are final and we do not accept appeals.
How can my 10th and 11th graders learn more about Hopkins?
We offer daily virtual events—from information sessions and tours to workshops and financial aid sessions.
Students can also check out our College Planning Toolkit for application resources, videos, and answers to our most commonly asked questions.
Our For Counselors page includes helpful resources for you and your staff, including more information on:
Requesting admissions or college search workshops
Letter of recommendation resources for counselors and teachers
If you have any seniors who are interested in Hopkins but did not apply EDI, you can apply either Early Decision II or Regular Decision by January 3, 2022.
Sincerely,
Ellen Chow

Georgetown University Pre-College Online Program
|
Summer is a perfect time for motivated high school students to start thinking about college. Georgetown University’s application period for summer is now open.
The online Pre-College programs help students ages 13 and older explore their interests. Through participating in our courses, students can discover if an interest could lead to a college major or even a future career.
Established in 1789, Georgetown is ranked among the top U.S. universities. We follow the Jesuit tradition of cura personalis—care for the whole person. Students deserve the opportunity to develop their own talents and dreams, and we believe our program of Pre-College Online Courses will help them do that.
Georgetown University invites you to get a taste of college study this summer.

FAFSA - REMINDER FOR SENIORS & PARENTS!
|
SENIORS & PARENTS,
Sending along your bi-weekly reminder to fill out the FAFSA form for you senior if you haven't yet. Even if you feel your family doesn't qualify for aid - your child will NOT be considered for ACADEMIC scholarships if you do not fill out the FAFSA form. Please see additional information below!
What is the FAFSA form?
Before each year of college, apply for federal grants, work-study, and loans with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Your college uses your FAFSA data to determine your federal aid eligibility. Many states and colleges use FAFSA data to award their own aid. After submission, you’ll receive your Student Aid Report.
Review Your Aid Offer
Your aid offer explains the types and amounts of aid a college is offering you, and your expected costs for the year. If you’ve been accepted to multiple colleges, compare the costs and aid offers. Accept the aid from the school that's best for you and inform them of other sources of aid (such as scholarships) you expect to receive.
Get Your Aid
Time to go to school! Your financial aid office will apply your aid to the amount you owe your school and send you the remaining balance to spend on other college costs. One of the requirements to maintain financial aid eligibility is that you must make satisfactory academic progress. And don’t forget to complete a FAFSA® form each year!
Federal Student Aid staff members have been busy updating FAFSA resources for you. You'll find resources, updates, and talking points on the Financial Aid Toolkit site. For links to popular FAFSA materials, visit FinancialAidToolkit.ed.gov/fafsa-updates.
If you have questions regarding the FAFSA form, please reach out to Renee Booker (financial aid advisor from AACC) at rlbooker1@aacc.edu.

SAT/ACT TESTING DATES
|
Hi Juniors & Seniors!
It’s no secret that most college applications require you to submit your SAT or ACT score, making taking the exam an absolute must. In addition to it being a requirement, colleges and universities receive thousands of applications every year. The scores on the SAT and ACT allow them to narrow down the playing field and make decisions on acceptance.
In addition to your college applications, your SAT and ACT scores can be used to apply for scholarships. These are sometimes merit based scholarships, granted directly from your choice of college during the application process. Others may be from local, state, or regional programs where your grades, academic achievements, and score affect your eligibility.
We wanted to stress the importance of taking the SAT and/or ACT more than once. Studies show that students typically receive a higher score the second time they sit for the test. It would be most beneficial to take the SAT and/or ACT your junior year, then again your senior year. If you receive free or reduced lunch, you qualify for a fee waiver. The counselors have them available in their offices.
Please see attachment for 2021-22 testing dates. You may register for the SAT on collegeboard.org.
See your counselor with any additional questions.
