The End of Our 1st Quarter!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the students and parents who have been patient during this challenging environment we find ourselves in. I realize that this is not an optimal way to study science, and I know that there have certainly been some hiccups along the way. I ask you to encourage your student to attend FLEX for additional support in the lesson material, or to ask for more help. I will also be offering tutoring outside of school hours, in addition to the FLEX and Office hours, to assist students who are in need of assistance. Tutoring will be available from 4PM-5PM on Mondays for Chemistry, and 4PM-5PM on Wednesday for Physics. The Google Meet code is: https://meet.google.com/lookup/agooh65kcn

Emory University Scholar Programs
We want to be sure you know about the Emory University Scholar Programs, our comprehensive merit scholarships that empower students to reach their full potential and make an impact on the world. The Scholars application deadline is November 15, 2020. Not much has changed since last year; however, we want to provide a quick refresher about how the Scholars selection process works with this year's test optional policy in mind. What kind of student is an Emory Scholar? At Emory, we believe the criteria for a merit scholarship goes way beyond GPA and test scores, especially in a year where so many students don't have scores. We invest in students who have creative minds, are intellectually curious, and are engaged with their communities and areas of interest. Emory Scholars are typically the students you describe like this: “I have never met a student this curious, engaged, bright, accomplished, and kind, all wrapped into one.” Can students without test scores be considered for merit scholarships? Yes! Students who have not submitted test scores (or who have stated they would not like their scores considered in the review of their application) will be eligible for full merit scholarship consideration. For many years, test scores have not been a large part of our holistic review process. We will lean more heavily on other application materials, including personal statements, short answer questions, letters of recommendation, high school transcript, and, where available, alumni interview feedback. Broadly talented We’re looking for students who have made the absolute most of the opportunities and resources available to them. impactful character intellectual and personal vigor outstanding academic achievement masterful communication skills formidable leadership and creativity in school or the community high potential for enriching the lives of peers at Emory More than just a merit scholarship In addition to full tuition, fees, and on-campus room and board, Scholars often enjoy many of these benefits: university grants beyond what is typically available for research, internships, service, and study abroad opportunities additional mentoring and networking opportunities with top-tier faculty connected to the Scholar Programs a community of active, engaged Emory Scholars on campus and across the globe Important details The Emory Scholars application deadline is November 15. Applicants do not need to be nominated by their high school counselor. There is no separate application or additional Scholars essay. All students, regardless of citizenship, can be considered. Selection as an Emory Scholar is nonbinding. There are three paths into the program: Emory College Woodruff Scholars, Oxford College Woodruff Scholars, and Goizueta Scholars. To apply, click here: https://apply.emory.edu/financial-aid/types-of-aid/scholar-program.html

Winter Sports Family Survey
Dear winter student-athletes and families: The MPSSAA winter sport season is scheduled to run from December 7, 2020 through February 13, 2021. Our intention in AACPS is to engage this season in whichever way we can, weather that be virtual, in-person, or a combination of both. Our primary goals are to maximize participation, promote school-community engagement, and support the social-emotional needs of our students. While we know our COVID metrics are trending in the wrong direction at this time and a virtual start to our winter season is a very real possibility, we feel strongly that the connection between a student-athlete and their coach (in any capacity) is invaluable. We want those connections to occur and are planning accordingly. With all that in mind, we are asking for your feedback on the survey to help guide us forward. Additionally, we are surveying coaches. We hope the information learned from both surveys will help inform all stakeholders. AACPS Winter Student-Athlete/Family Survey https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSex6IidMKTly734lJDsCv7XfEWfgnSJJOOqA4HWWA9122zs_A/viewform We are asking that the survey be completed by Tuesday, November 17th. Thank you very much for you feedback,

Mr. Smith
