Oct 29th, 2016, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

www.cityofbowie.org/weedwarriors

The City of Bowie’s Green Team is in need of volunteers to help remove English ivy from Whitemarsh Park. As an invasive, non-native plant, English ivy spreads quickly and easily, and is very destructive to native ecosystems. This is an outdoor activity that requires cutting the ivy vines at eye-level and foot-level, then pulling them back about two feet from the base of the tree to bag them. To participate, please register by contacting Kristin Larson (klarson@cityofbowie.org, 301-809-3044). This is a great Student Service Learning opportunity. Children age 14 and younger must be under the direct supervision of a parent/guardian or Troop Leader at all times, and no volunteers under age 16 can use tools but may participate by pulling and bagging vines. Tiffany Wright (Watershed Manager for the City of Bowie) or Kristin Larson (Sustainability Planner for the City of Bowie) will sign off on service learning hours for students at the event.

EZ Storage on Gallant Fox Lane (near 197/450)

ACADEMY NEWS
Artsonia.com The World's Largest Student Art Museum
Greetings Parents,

As discussed during back to school night, I have been in the process of creating an Artsonia art gallery account for every student enrolled in art class. Artsonia is the world's largest student art museum. It is a great way for students to display their artwork and for parents to support their student's achievements. It also allows technology to be included in the art curriculum here at CMITS.

So far I have set up 462 student accounts with the exception of a few new students. The process is pretty simple. Once I have entered a parent email address, Artsonia sends you an invitation to grant permission for your student's artwork to be published in the school gallery. As of today I have 79% parent permission granted, the rest of the emails are still pending. I have sent those emails to whatever address is in our CLF parent contact system. If you have not received an email yet please contact me at rquinn@cmitsouth.org with an updated address and I will resend the invitation.

We have published a total of 344 artworks and 51 of our students have already received awards from Artsonia! Beginning next week I will show students a tutorial video on how to upload their own artwork to their gallery and that will be the process for submitting art homework for the rest of the school year. I will continue to upload artwork for elective art classwork but uploading general art class homework assignments will be the students responsibility. I have attached a few screen shots of what the initial invitation email from Artsonia looks like along with steps of how the process works. All students need is the school access code which is highlighted to the right of the second screen shot.

Our goal is to have 100% parent permission granted. When the students have your support, their creative effort and ability tend to increase to even higher level. I am looking forward to working with you and your talented scholars to show the world how great their artwork is. If you have any questions or concerns my door is always open and I am always here to help.

National Bullying Prevention Month
The month of October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Throughout the month, students will be learning more about bullying. I encourage you to talk to your student about bullying. It is important to know exactly what bullying is. The definition of bullying provided by stopbullying.gov is; "Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Both kids who are bullied and who bully others may have serious, lasting problems." It is important to be aware of the definition of bullying. Bullying can have lasting negative effects and is a serious issue. Remember for behavior to be defined as bullying it must be aggressive, have an imbalance of power and be repetitive.

Stay tuned next week to learn tips on how to talk to your student about bullying.

Hall Passes
CMIT South staff allows students to use restroom and to visit the health office as needed. To maximize the instruction time in the classroom, students are expected to plan their day effectively. Utilizing the class transition time, homeroom, and lunch periods for restroom visits reduces the need to leave classrooms while learning is taking place.

Upon receiving teachers' permission, students are required to check out through classroom tablets; each classroom departure is logged in to SIS system. Student Support Specialists will be tracking the hall use data each week. School staff was informed about the students who have medical or other health conditions that require more frequent restroom, water fountain, or nurse visits. CMIT South staff also recognizes the needs of our young ladies who may ask for more hall passes. Classroom teachers are asked to approve each restroom and health room visit request coming from students.

Hall pass use data utilization:

- Starting from the 4th hall pass use within the same week, parents receive an email from the CLF Portal system. These emails are not punitive but informative for parents to know that the student have already used hall pass more than 3 times in that week.

- Starting from the 6th hall pass use within the same week, school staff may look into the reasons for frequent hall pass use; a student-staff conversation 'may' take place to identify the student's needs.

- Starting from the 10th hall pass use within the same week, additional conversations with the student or parents 'may' take place. The students who use hall passes 10 or more times in a week without any specific excuse 'may' require an adult escort in the hallways.

With a student-staff-parent collaborative effort, instruction time will be maximized in our classrooms.
