September 11 Remembrance
In remembrance of September 11 tragedy, Captain Edward W. Gantt addressed CMIT South students. Captain Gantt explained how the September 11 tragedy impacted our nation, the reasons behind the tragedy, and how to avoid such experiences in the future. Captain Gantt emphasized the importance of education, peace, and respecting diversity.

Captain Gantt, who grew up in Fairmount Heights area, shared his education and experience with his various Navy assignments. Students were advised to set goals for themselves, focus on their studies, and be exemplary citizens to bring the peace back to the world.

Tech Savvy Parent Platforms


As we begin the new school year, CMIT South is providing returning and current parents with a one stop shop for the platforms you would find useful throughout the school year.

Lunch Payment - www.myschoolbuck.com.
You will need to set up an account. You will need your child's student's ID number for this. Once done, you can view all of your children who attend PGCPS under one login, make payments, view balances, payment history and finally view meal purchases.

This is a platform exclusive to CMIT South families. You will need to create an account to utilize this platform. Once done you can view your child's SIS points in real time. You will also be able to see when your child leaves the classroom and returns. With this information, you can continuously monitor your child's progress. SIS points are used throughout the year to determine eligibility for various activities and events.

Schoolmax - www.pgcps.org - Parents - Schoolmax Family Portal
This is a PGCPS platform utilized to keep parents abreast of their student's attendance and grades. Parents would need to create an account to access this platform. Once done, parents can view student's attendance, grades, student information, schedule, grades since student started in PGCPS, and Service Learning Hours.

Edmodo - www.edmodo.com
This is CMIT South's e-learning platform. All teachers at CMIT South use this platform to communicate daily assignments, give quizzes, provide updates and alerts, etc. Parents will need to create an account to have access to their child's Edmodo groups or classes. To create an account, you will need the parent code on the bottom left of your child's Edmodo home screen. Once created, you will be able to see all your child's activities in various classes, upcoming due dates, assignments, graded work, completed work and teacher comment. CMIT South does not allow discussions among students however students may drop comments/questions for teacher.

This is the platform made available by Chesapeake Lighthouse Foundations for the purpose enrolling and paying for before or after school enrichment.


Pearson Online Learning and Resource - www.pearsonsuccessnet.com
This is a CMIT South platform for online textbooks and resources for some of the classes your child will be taking. Students will be given access by their teachers and have to remember their login information.

NWEA MAP Testing
Welcome Back!

Over the next two weeks (9/19-9/30) all students will be participating in NWEA MAP testing. The MAP test is an adaptive computer based assessment that measure student's current achievement levels. Students will participate in both Math and Reading portions of the assessment.

The MAP teasing will help to measure students progress throughout the year. Please make sure your students are in school and on-time each day.

Drop off and Pick up
Thank you parents for following the traffic pattern and making plans to arrive by 7:25 every morning and by 2:40 every afternoon. We ask everyone to be patient and to allow additional time in the morning and afternoon.

Please arrive no later than 7:25 am in the morning so that the students have ample time to use lockers, eat breakfast, and be ready to learn.

CMIT South's 2nd Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration October 13th
At 6:30pm on October 13th, CMIT South's students, World Language Department, and parent volunteers will be hosting our 2nd annual HHM celebration. We are looking forward to an exciting and culturally enlightening evening with student presentations of word, dance, and music.

Student Service Learning Opportunities
The Ports Town

Join one of the county's biggest events, Port Towns Day! We need your help in setting up tables, tents and picking up trash during the day shift. During the afternoon to evening shift, you will be breaking down tables and chairs, picking up trash and helping to put things away. During the afternoon and evening shift, you will also get a coupon for food from one of our vendors.

Hispanic Festival
Volunteer groups, with members ages 14 and up, are needed on Sunday, September 18, at Lane Manor Park, 11 am - 6:30 pm to assist with youth games, rides and crafts, and other duties as needed. This event is outdoors and will take place rain or shine. Ability to speak Spanish is helpful, but not required.

This volunteer opportunity is approved for Prince George's County Public Schools student service learning hours.

The City of Bowie’s Green Team is in need of volunteers to help remove English ivy from Whitemarsh Park. As an invasive, non-native plant, English ivy spreads quickly and easily, and is very destructive to native ecosystems. This is an outdoor activity that requires cutting the ivy vines at eye-level and foot-level, then pulling them back about two feet from the base of the tree to bag them. To participate, please register by contacting Kristin Larson (klarson@cityofbowie.org, 301-809-3044). This is a great Student Service Learning opportunity. Children age 14 and younger must be under the direct supervision of a parent/guardian or Troop Leader at all times, and no volunteers under age 16 can use tools but may participate by pulling and bagging vines. Tiffany Wright (Watershed Manager for the City of Bowie) or Kristin Larson (Sustainability Planner for the City of Bowie) will sign off on service learning hours for students at the event.



Wetland Cleanup

Parents and Guardians,

CMIT South will soon begin tryouts for middle school boy's and girl's basketball. All students must have a physical on file before tryouts. Tryouts are expected to begin around the beginning November.

CMIT South will also like to have a our very first JV boy's and girl's basketball team. Tryouts for JV basketball is expected to begin in the middle of November. Participants must have a physical on file before tryouts.

ACADEMY NEWS
STEM Project Update


The tentative date for this year's CLF STEM/Maker Fair is January 28, 2017. Prior to this date, all CLF schools will hold a STEM Fair at the school for their students. The top 3-5 students in each category will be participating in the CLF STEM Fair. Students are to complete preceding parts of the project before moving on to the next parts. Please keep this dates in mind. All parts will be recorded in Schoolmax as an assessment grade. These assignments are not eligible for retake.

STEM and Makers Fair Proposals Due This Weekend!
CMIT South students and parents,

All middle school students are required to participate in the CMIT South STEM Fair or the Makers Fair. All projects must be approved by the student's science teacher before work may begin. Project proposals are due to the science teachers by 7:30 am on Monday, September 19.

What is the Uniform Policy?
The uniform policy can be found on our website, under Students tab.

How do we order uniform items?
Uniform items can be ordered by completing the online order form: http://www.glenburnie.minutemanpress.com/cmit/welcome.html

Do I have to purchase uniforms from this vendor?
No, however, uniforms purchased from other vendors must have 100% identical color tone and the CMIT South logo. The current uniform vendor provides donation to the CMIT South PTO based on sales. Each uniform purchase from Minuteman Press is contribution to the school. 

What is CMIT's Daily Schedule?
7:35- 7:45am:
- Student arrival (drop off is at the side entrance)
- Doors close at 7:45am (after 7:45am parents need to sign late students in at the Front Office)

7:35 - 7:57am:
- Homeroom (Breakfast is available during this time until 7:50am)

8:00am - 2:49pm for 6th grade and 2:54 for 7th grade: 
- Academic instruction

2:49/2:54 - 3:05 pm
Student pick-up outside (Students who are not picked up by 3:10pm will be waiting outside for their ride. There is no adult supervision for these students during this time).

Clubs and enrichment activities will begin immediately following dismissal. All club/enrichment participants must report directly to the cafeteria. Students who continuously fail to report directly to their designated locations will lose the privilege to participate in any after school activities. 

How do I pay for my child's lunch?
Breakfast and lunch are served every day. You can add money to your child's account by visiting this link. You can also pay by cash or money order in the cafeteria. 

Can my child bring their own lunch to school?
Students can bring a lunch from home. Lunches can be stored in the student's locker. Microwaves are available in the cafeteria to warm food. Refrigerators are not available for students.

What do they serve for school lunch?
A monthly menu is provided by Food and Nutrition Services. Click here for lunch and breakfast menu.

What is the academic calendar?
CMIT follows the Prince George's County Public School calendar found here. To receive notifications of PGCPS school cancellations by providing information here.

Where can I find information about CMIT events and updates?
