Hour of Code
|
Dear Parents: We live in a world surrounded by technology. And we know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly hinge on understanding how technology works. But only a tiny fraction of us are learning computer science, and less students are studying it than a decade ago. That’s why our entire school, during Computer Science Education Week (Dec. 7-13), is joining in on the largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code. All this week, 191,000 organizers are leading schools and events worldwide. More than 130 million students have already tried an Hour of Code. Our Hour of Code is a statement that CMIT South is ready to teach these 21st century foundation skills. To continue bringing programming activities to your students, we planned a poster competition - optional project and spending time this week exploring computer science through programs provided by Hour of Code. This is a chance to change the future of education. See http://hourofcode.com/us for details.

SUMMIT Scholar High School Program
|
The SUMMIT Scholar Program is · an intensive, comprehensive college preparatory program · a small, supportive learning community within a large public school · a rigorous and challenging Advanced Placement experience · a place for motivated, achieving, thoughtful students · a signature program available only to students residing in the Bowie High boundary Although the official deadline is past, the SUMMIT program does accept late applications for consideration for the wait-list. Historically, they accept several students every year from the wait-list; if a late applicant has a strong academic record and entrance exam score, the odds are in his or her favor. Students may apply and register for the entrance exam here: https://sites.google.com/a/pgcps.org/bowie-hs-summit-program/

CLP Winter Gear Drive
|
Hello CMIT Family,
As we approach the cold weather season, the ladies of CLP recognize that many in our community cannot afford proper winter gear to keep them warm. To that end, we are asking for donations of gently used winter gear of all sizes, including infant and toddler. We are in need of gloves, mittens, earmuffs, scarves, hats, jackets and coats (please do not send boots or clothes). A bin to collect donations will be located in the Safety Hallway across from the gym. Donations will be given to Shepherd Cove, a family emergency shelter located in PG County. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

ID Checks
|
Scholars and Parents,
For issues of safety, as well as identification, CMIT South requires all students to wear a student ID card on a lanyard daily as part of their uniform. Students who do not have a lanyard or ID holder may come to the SSS office and see Mr. Curtis or Ms. Miles for a temporary substitute until an appropriate one can be obtained at home. Lost IDs can be replaced at a cost of $5. The penalty for not wearing an ID is 3 SIS points. During random ID checks, students wearing their ID will receive 3 SIS points for that day so be sure to have it on at all times!

CLF Invites Parent Members to Serve on the CLF Board of Directors
|
Chesapeake Lighthouse Foundation Board of Directors voted unanimously to increase its board membership from 7 to 9 effective 2016. The CLF Board will add two parent members from Prince George’s County to its Board of Directors. Interested parent candidates wishing to join are required to submit their resume along with a cover letter of intent to the board of directors by January 10th, at the latest. Cover letter items should include various ways the parent candidate believes they will best represent CLF’s public charter schools by contributing to the CLF board. Potential candidates are also asked to indicate how many children they have attending CMIT schools and how many years they have been involved with CMIT schools in their cover letter. Please e-mail your resume and cover letter to: secretary@clfmd.org with the subject line: “CLF Board Parent Candidate.”
Board Executive committee will review resume submissions and select five candidates prior to the board meeting. The board will vote to elect two out of these five parent candidates recommended by the executive committee at the January 21, 2016 CLF Board Meeting. The parent board members selected will then serve a one-year term and parent board members may serve for three consecutive terms if re-appointed by a majority board vote at the end of each annual term.
