Welcome Back From The Principal
|
Greetings CMIT South Community:
As principal of Chesapeake Math & IT Academy South MS/HS, it is my pleasure to welcome everyone to another great school year! We are so excited to welcome staff and students back into the building, filling our classrooms and hallways with energy and enthusiasm for teaching and learning. This has been an exception first week of school!!
Here at CMIT South we strive to create a learning environment where every student feels safe, loved, challenged, and has meaningful reasons to come to school each day. We want to ensure all students have opportunities to achieve their maximum potential by equipping and empowering them with analytical thinking and quantitative reasoning skills. We aim to prepare our students to become competent, responsible, and successful individuals in our globalized and technology-based society. We believe that it’s only through our partnership with students, parents, and our community of supporters, that CMIT Academy South students continue to demonstrate educational excellence!
CMIT South worked hard this summer, preparing for an incredible new school year. The admin team has met consistently all summer to plan supportive systems of support for both students and staff. We have hired and on-boarded over 26 new staff members! Our Operations and Administrative Teams have organized several classroom changes to include six brand new computer labs, grade level hallways, Promethean Boards in every classroom, and iPads for our instructional staff. We’ve also had some updates to our plumbing and electrical needs. Our hard-working custodial staff have been cleaning and sanitizing our school and moving furniture all over the building. Our cafeteria workers are preparing to serve our children a delicious and healthy breakfast and lunch each school day.
We are excited and ready to safely welcome all of our students and staff back to the building for a year of clear systems and support that will lead us to success! Effective Tuesday, September 6th all PGCPS schools are returning to optional mask wearing while in the building.
I am honored to serve as the Principal of Chesapeake Math & IT Academy South MS/HS. It is an absolute privilege to be a part of an academic community where students, parents, and staff members genuinely care for each other and strive to build positive relationships that support academic, social, and emotional growth. Once again, welcome back!

Student Arrival and Dismissal
|
Thank you all for your patience as we have experimented this week, trying to find the safest and quickest way to get you in and out of the school parking lot!!! This year we will use all three lanes during dismissal. This allows us to clear the roads quicker and get more cars into the parking lot. It is imperative that you follow the directions of school staff. PLEASE PULL ALL THE WAY TO TOP BEFORE STOPPING. This allows us to get more cars in the parking lot. It is also important to have conversations with your scholars about being ready when you arrive to keep the traffic moving. When students are not paying attention it slows down the process. One suggestion is to call your scholar as you are entering the school so they are upfront and ready.
Our school building opens for students at 8:20 a.m. In order to ensure your child’s safety, we ask you not to release your child from your car onto school property before 8:00 a.m. (Changed). Releasing students on the property before this time is a safety concern and will be followed up on by an administrator.
Student drivers and van riders will be dismissed at 2:50pm. All other students are dismissed at 2:55pm. The location of CMIT South is not ideal and traffic can be very overwhelming for everyone. Please ensure you are following the direction of the PG County Police Officers and CMIT South Staff. Our goal is always to get your children to you as safely and quickly as possible. If patience is not a strength of yours, we have a few recommendations that will help you to avoid the traffic at dismissal:
Register for our Before/After School Enrichment Program
Hire Private Transportation Services
Wait to pick up your scholar between 3:20-3:30
Afterschool Clubs/Sports (dismiss at 4pm)

Attendance Policies At CMIT South MS/HS
|
Hello CMIT South MS/HS Families,
As we begin the new school year, we want to make sure all parents and students are aware of the CMIT South attendance policies. At CMIT South we follow the PGCPS attendance policy AP 5113. Below are some quick bullet points of the attendance policies:
CMIT South will use the google form 2022-2023 Absence Reason Notification Form CMIT South Middle/High School for all student's absences. This form will serve as the official means of parent/guardian notifications for student absences.
CMIT South does not take paper excused/doctor notes. When a student is going to be absent please fill out the google form 2022-2023 Absence Reason Notification Form CMIT South Middle/High School. This form will be sent straight to the attendance manager.
Parents are the only ones who can fill out the form and email the attendance manager about a student who is absent. A student cannot send the email or fill out the google form, the absence will not be excused if a student does it.
The google form must be filled out within 3 days of the student’s absence, otherwise, the absence will not be excused.
Students who are considered unlawfully (unexcused) absent from school or a class will not have the opportunity to make up missed assignments.
A doctor’s note is needed if a student is reported absent for three school days for an illness and a physician’s certificate will be required if a student's absences reach six days. Please send the physician’s certificate directly to the school's attendance manager at attendance@cmitsouth.org.
Mental Health Day. Students may receive as an excused absence one (1) day of absence in each semester of each school year for a student’s mental health needs. A note from a physician to excuse a student’s absence for mental health needs is not required.
Here is the link to the 2022-2023 Absence Reason Notification Form CMIT South Middle/High School Form: https://forms.gle/QCb1Xu2ytD9vUToW6
Once again these are just some of the new updates that PGCPS has put in the attendance policy AP 5113. We encourage all parents to read the full updated attendance policy here:

Thank you.

Uniform Policy
|
CMIT South MS/HS is a mandatory uniform school. The complete dress code policy, with pictures, can be found at https://cmitsouth.org/uniform-policy/. All students are expected to wear their complete uniforms to school daily. In addition, students are expected to wear PE uniforms on days they have PE and oxford shirts and ties on days we have Picture Day, assemblies, field trips and any other special events. This includes jackets, sweaters, hoodies, etc. Shoes MUST be 100% black as well.

Students are required to place their cellphones and non CMIT-South issued outerwear/apparel in their lockers. Welcome to Sixth Grade Art!
|
Hello 6th Grade Families!
My name is Miss Bell and I am happy to say I am the 6th Grade Visual Art teacher this year. Because I am the sixth grade art teacher, I am so excited to be guiding your children on a creative voyage. I will be able to see sides of their personality that the other classroom teachers may never see. I will witness them create solutions to problems and use their critical thinking skills to create thoughtful pieces of art.
You can review the Art 6 Syllabus by clicking on the attachment below.
I understand that each teacher probably sends home or emails you a syllabus so I will include the highlights right here in this email:
- Students are expected to provide a sketchbook for class. They will need it for class starting next week. (If you cannot get a sketchbook, please let me know via email immediately.)
- Students receive a Art Class Rewards Card where they can get hole-punches on a card for doing well in class and are able to turn in completed cards for a reward.
- The grade breakdown for art is a little different from other classes, Classwork is worth 50%, Independent Assignment is worth 30%, and Assessment is worth 20% of students' grades. This is important because half of their overall grade comes from their classwork so it is important to come to school and be focused.
If you have any questions about your child's education or simply want to talk with me, I can be reached primarily by email at abell@cmitsouth.org. I check my email regularly so this is really the best way to get in contact with me, however after 5pm I will not guarantee a response until the following morning. Please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to teaching your children this year and pushing them to reach their full artistic potential!

Volleyball Opportunities for Middle School Students
|
Hello all!
I have received several emails asking about volleyball for middle school students. PGCPS does not offer volleyball at the middle school level; however, there are some opportunities through organizations in our area that could provide middle school players the chance to get involved and start developing their skills before they get to high school.
Please note: I do not have any personal affiliation with these organizations. I am simply passing along information I have received about opportunities for middle school students.
Metro Volleyball Club offers rec leagues and clinics for middle schoolers. Please check out all their offerings at their website: https://metrovbc.sportngin.com/info
Athletic Republic in District Heights has some volleyball opportunities throughout the year. Please check out all their offerings at their website: https://capitolregion.athleticrepublic.com/sport-academies
DCPG Sports has also sent me the flyer attached about opportunities for middle schoolers.
I hope this helps!
Our schedule is attached below. We'd love to see future players at some of our games this season!
