GENERAL NEWS
Principal's Corner
Happy Friday Families! I hope you are all well and staying safe. Thanks to those of you who continue to reach out to welcome me to the CMIT South MHS family! I hope to meet everyone face to face at some point. As we approach the likelihood of schools moving to a hybrid model, I plan to hold a town hall prior to that point. My hope is to share with you CMIT South MHS' plan for students, staff, and visitors during that phase. Our school team designed to maintain safety, is currently being formed. We will be discussing all foreseeable concerns, as well as thinking proactively to anticipate concerns that will need to be addressed. Once we hold the town hall, I hope to get some of your thoughts for our consideration. While we plan for our scholars' return, I ask you to consider how you might be able to support us. For example, we already know we might need parents to help us monitor students "eyes on" from their cars during arrival. We will need to ensure students wear masks and maintain appropriate distances as they enter the building. This is just one example of support we might need from parents. We will most likely limit the number of visitors (anyone not employed to work in the building) in the building at any given time. Building access will most likely be by appointment only. These are just a few considerations we must entertain. We are aware, hybrid learning does not mean business as usual before Covid. We will need to diligently maintain safety to avoid having to return to a total distance learning mode. Again, our schedule will most likely be a Monday/Tuesday (AA) day in the building for one group and Thursday/Friday (BB) day in the building for another group. I hope I have given you a few things to consider. I will have more information when we meet. I will also send a written outline of what to expect once I have received directions from PGCPS and CLF. Until then, continue to stay safe and engaged.

Service Hour Opportunity: Youth Tutor Initiative
Dear Parents and Students! We have a fantastic opportunity for high school students to receive service hours! This message is from Ashley Brown and TaKaya Mcfarland, two CMIT South seniors who have recently started an online free tutoring service called Youth Tutor Initiative(YTI) that has been running for over six months now. This tutoring program is offered to students in grades K-8, but all of our tutors are high school students. We want to invite all CMIT South high schoolers to apply to this program. As said before, this tutoring program is free to all clients, but our tutors will receive student service hours for participation. We have an upcoming two-month tutoring session starting March 1st, and we urge all students to apply as a tutor today! Being a part of this program allows you to work one-on-one with a young student that you can help academically and even personally. Our tutors have complete freedom over the days and times they tutor, and they communicate directly with parents. Our program will not only provide service hours to our tutors, but the chance for them to become better communicators, learn how to manage their time, and even an opportunity to refresh on topics that may have slipped their mind over time. Ashley and Takaya run this program and have put their heart and soul into it! As a matter of fact, they were recently awarded the 2021 Catalyst IGen Influencer award from the Jack and Jill of America PG County chapter for their work with YTI! As YTI is in the process of expanding and moving into our next session, we hope that you or your child decides to apply! This program is such a great opportunity and an amazing way to help the community. Email us if you have any questions youthtutorinitiative@gmail.com. Sincerely, The YTI Family

Note: This program is not affiliated or managed by CMIT South or Chesapeake Lighthouse Foundations. Please find important links below. Application: https://forms.gle/EJWa1bZqUertdpMD6 Extended Deadline (February 15th at 11:59 pm) Our Website: https://youthtutorinitiative.wixsite.com/home

HS SGA - Your Health and Wellness
To all of our CMIT-South students and families, We know that this year has been unlike any other year. We understand the challenges that each person faces are unique and they may impact each person differently. We want everyone to know that we take our and your mental and emotional health seriously. We had a few high school students gather help resources to share with students and families. There are links for those feeling lost, stressed, anxious, or depressed, and links for those having trouble with school. We also encourage students to talk to people you know and feel comfortable with. You have family, friends, and trusted adults that are here to support you. All you have to do is ask. Don’t suffer in silence. UPCOMING EVENTS
PLTW and Amazon Application Deadline Extended to FEB 12TH
We are so honored to have you as a part of our CMIT South family and are excited to share our in house high school specialty programs with you. While the deadline has passed for the ITEC program, we also offer a pre-engineering pathway through the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Engineering curriculum and a computer science program in partnership with the Amazon Future Engineers program, and the application deadline for these programs is being extended to FEBRUARY 12, 2021. The PLTW program exposes students to real-world formulas, software, and projects to expose students to various areas of engineering. The Amazon program offers a unique opportunity for students to explore computer science and makes them eligible for one of Amazon's 100 scholarship/internship opportunities. Below you will find links to a presentation that offers lots of great information about how each program works. You will also see links to the CMIT South Specialty Programs application and the teacher recommendation forms. Even if you are familiar with these programs, we encourage you to review the presentation in its entirety with your scholar prior to making your final decision on which program to apply to. Traditionally, students have entered this program as a rising ninth-grade student. However, it is our goal to offer this opportunity to rising 10th-grade students as well, if we have enough interest and available space. This goal would require those interested 10th-grade students to simultaneously take the 9th and 10th-grade program courses.
