RESCHEDULED - STEM/Maker Fair, WEDNESDAY, JAN 23 2019
|
According to the weather report for next week, we are expecting snow next Thursday night. So instead of waiting to see if we will have school or not on Friday, 01/25/2019 the Science Department is being proactive and moving the fair to Wednesday, January 23, 2019.
Students will need to wear their oxford uniforms on this day (even if it is a gym day) and if they are completing a multimedia presentation, they will need to bring in their computer/laptop/iPad/tablet. Students will leave this devices in the lockers until it is their turn to present. CMIT South MS/HS is not responsible for loss or damage of these equipments. Students may NOT present on a cell phone. Students may also bring in their projects on Wednesday if they so wish.

WE WANT YOUR PICTURES FOR THE MIDDLE SCHOOL YEARBOOK!
|
Get your pictures in this year's middle school yearbook!
We would like to invite all parents, guardians, family members, and students to submit photos for this year's middle school yearbook. If you have great photos of middle school events or of you and your friends just having fun, we would like to see them! Our photographers can't be everywhere this year, so help us get as many photos as possible to create a terrific book everyone will want to have. The more pictures we have, the better chance of seeing yourself and your friends in the yearbook! We want photos of sporting events, school events (Hispanic Heritage, Talent Show, school dances, Black History Celebration, etc.), and casual group photos too (you can keep the selfies though!).
We have two ways to submit photos this year and they can be submitted from now until the end of April, so upload after each event you attend throughout the year. See below and the attachments for instructions on how to use either site.
Option 1: ReplayIt Site
On this site, you can upload any school-related photos off your phone or Facebook to a school-wide photo sharing site. This allows any member of the school community to see pictures of all the things happening at school this year. Directions for setting up a ReplayIt account are attached below.
Option 2: Private Upload
If you'd rather not share your photos to the entire school community site, you can upload them strictly for yearbook use.
Here is how you can submit photos privately:
• Go to: https://images.memoryebooks.com/login
• If it does not automatically log you into the site, enter username: 411443695
• Browse to select the photo(s) you wish to upload.
• Enter information about the photo and provide contact information in case the staff needs additional information.
• Click "Save Details".
It's that easy..submit your photos today! Remember, the last day to submit photos is April 22nd, but don't wait...do it today and keep submitting as the year goes!!
**(We will review all photos and determine final yearbook content. We cannot guarantee that all submissions can be used in the book.)

CMIT-South's Men of Distinction Leadership Program Recent Events...
|
Hello Parents and Students!
CMIT-South's MOD program for Middle and High School young men has gotten off to a great start!
In our first event in November 2018, we hosted a mentor "Meet and Greet". The young men came out and met our mentors for the program, played basketball, and shared good food. (See some pics below).
Our second event in December 2018 centered around "Bridging the Gap with Law Enforcement". At this event, we were proud to host a special guest from Prince George's County Law Enforcement, Major Kevin Hughes. We also hosted some of our own mentors and leaders.
The first portion of the event was an introduction of our Student Support staff at CMIT-South by Mr. Cook. It addressed some of the issues the young men have been facing at school. Some of these issues surround consent and what does that entail, fighting, etc. That was followed up with a discussion about counseling services available to the youth at CMIT-South when issues arise that are difficult to deal with. This was addressed by Mr. Pitter, the Middle School Counselor.
Teachers also show their support every event and talk with the students about pending school issues, the importance of finishing tasks, discipline, and focus. Shout outs to Mr. Tucker and Mr. Washington for being a huge support every event.
The second portion of the event featured Major Hughes and his presentation regarding safety and our youth. There was a question and answer session as well that opened the floor to many of the young men's concerns. What is appropriate cell phone use and can a cell phone really be swiped or erased? How should I act if I get stopped by a policeman and I am walking, driving a car, etc.? What should I expect from a police officer if I get stopped and what is not proper behavior? What about my rights and how does that come into play when a policeman stops me? Can you shed some light on the nationwide epidemic of the deaths of so many young males by police? Major Hughes was more than willing to discuss these topics and was very specific in actions that the young men should and should not do when approached by an officer. He also addressed cell phone usage in depth and the answers the young men received was very helpful and informative. (See some pics below...)
From this event, we are proud to say that there will be some representatives from law enforcement that will come to CMIT-South later on this quarter and discuss school safety, school shootings, shut-down procedures, etc.
Special thanks to Mrs. Asafa, PTO - especially Mrs. Gallaway, the planning committee (Mr. Battle, Mr. Vincent, and Mr. Anderson), teachers, mentors, and parents for all of your support in these efforts to build leadership, character, integrity, and confidence in our young men. This program could not be a success without you!
More to come on the third event soon...

CMIT-Chefs Club is on Fire!
|
Parents and Students,
Since the beginning of the year, the CMIT-South Chef's Club has been held on every other Monday and Wednesday of the month. It is from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in our kitchen area.
The students have been awesome in participating in this club from behavior to commitment. They have learned about various topics like food safety, technique, seasonings and their origin, and food prep. Also, shout outs to the parents for providing the ingredients and supplies each time.
So far, we have over 30 students participating in the club on various days. We have cooked the following dishes... Vegetable Frittata, Oreo Cream Pie, Homemade Pepperoni Pizza Hot Pockets, Homemade biscuits, Homemade Alfredo Sauce, and Shepherd's Pie is next. During the month of February, we will honor Black History by learning some cultural dishes like Collard Greens and Jambalaya.
Special thanks to a fellow teacher, Mrs. Melchoir, for allowing us to use her room in the afternoons for the Chef's Club. We appreciate you!
It is my pleasure to teach this club and there is more to come...
