PGCPS BOE Restores Spring Break
|
The Prince George’s County Board of Education unanimously approved Thursday fully restoring Spring Break and closing schools next week. Students will return to school April 9.
“Our students, employees and their families appreciate the Board’s action and the state’s willingness to add flexibility to the school calendar,” said Dr. Kevin M. Maxwell, Chief Executive Officer.
Five inclement weather makeup days were built into the approved 2017-2018 School Calendar, including two at the end of fourth quarter (June 14 and 15); one on the February 9 professional development day; and two during Spring Break (April 5 and 6). Dr. Maxwell withdrew his proposal to add an additional inclement weather makeup day on April 4, to make up the lost day of instruction due to inclement weather on March 22.
PGCPS plans to extend the school year to June 20, contingent on the governor signing the legislation into law, rather than open schools next week. All Maryland school districts are required to start school after Labor Day with June 15 as the last day of instruction due to an Executive Order by Gov. Larry Hogan. This week’s state bill does not change the post-Labor Day start for schools.

VIRTUAL REALITY @ CMIT SOUTH - USED SMARTPHONE DONATION NEEDED
|
CMIT South is excited to bring Virtual Reality into the classroom at CMIT South. Virtual Reality (VR) describes three-dimensional computer-generated environments that replace the normal reality in which our everyday lives play out. With this technology, students can take excursions while in the classroom and fully immersed in the environment they are viewing. CMIT South has invested in some VR equipments and would love to begin using them with Google Expedition. We are in need of your old smartphones/IPod - Android and Apple to use with the VR equipments. Please email ebrown@cmitsouth.org if you would like us to take that old phone off your hands. Looking forward to hearing from you. GUESS WHAT THE HOLDER CLASS IS DOING THIS WEEK?
|
March 28, 2018 Dear Parents and Students: This week heads toward the end of the 3rd Quarter and Spring Break rapidly approaches. I am sure the students are looking forward to this time of rest, fun, and relaxation. They deserve it!!! They have been working extremely hard and they should be proud! In class, we have been studying Economic Injustice and Inequality. It is the ARC theme for the quarter. To further explore this topic, we have discussed several types of injustice, such as Economic Inequality, Gender Inequality, Racial Inequality and the like. Part of this portion of the curriculum is teaching about the creation of intellectual arguments and persuasion. This week in particular, the students have been learning about Persuasive Text/Media and the elements of Pathos, Logos, and Ethos. I have inserted a YouTube video here that the kids watched as an example of these three items. https://youtu.be/0aUPsQMLzjw Ask your child about this exercise and some of the class activities, discussions, and presentations dealing with these subjects. For the current Book of the Month, the students are reading The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. In preparation for the upcoming PARCC test, the students are being asked to give more thought and clarification to the characters, vocabulary, central ideas, author’s point of view, plot structure, and writing style of the text and author in the form of the weekly Reading Log. This leads to higher thinking question skills and activities that will help them in other areas as well, such as standardized testing. As always, thank you for allowing me the privilege to engage with your child through literature this year at CMIT-South. I am always available for suggestions and collaboration from the parents in this process. Have a wonderful, safe Spring Break and see you next week.
Warm Regards,
Mrs. Dee Wells-Holder Middle School RELA Department Grade 7 dwellsholder@cmitsouth.org
