GENERAL NEWS
ITEC Enrollment for SY18-19 is Now Open

Rising 9th-grade students are invited to participate in CMIT-South's Information Technology Early College (ITEC) program next year. This is a unique program that allows students to participate in dual enrollment courses beginning in the 9th grade and earn an Associate Degree in Information Technology by the time they graduate high school. The program is especially suited to students with a strong interest in information technology and those with a strong work ethic.

We have started the application process on Friday, January 19th, by giving ITEC application forms to our current 8th-grade students. The due date for ITEC application is Wednesday, January 31st, at 3:00 pm. All applications must be returned to Ms.Amos, Professional School Counselor, no later than the due date.

Students who successfully meet this deadline will be invited to take the Accuplacer Exam. Any student who meets PGCC eligibility requirements will be invited to continue the enrollment process which may include, but not limited to, interviews, teacher recommendations, and writing samples.

This enrollment season is the only opportunity to enroll in this unique program, ITEC, and the application deadline is firm.

For more information about ITEC program please check out the attached flyer and visit:

Inclement Weather: Update on Make-Up Days
Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) lost a third day of instruction on Wednesday, January 17 after closing schools due to unsafe weather and road conditions affecting school transportation. With little flexibility in the 2017-2018 school calendar due to constraints imposed by Governor Larry Hogan’s school calendar Executive Order, teachers and students now will be required to attend school on February 9, 2018, to meet the State’s 180-day mandated school year.

The teacher professional development day originally scheduled for February 9 has been cancelled. Schools will follow a B Day schedule on both February 8 and 9.

PGCPS developed its school calendar to meet Governor Hogan’s requirements for students to have a school year beginning after Labor Day and ending by June 15. So far this school year, PGCPS has closed schools due to unsafe weather conditions on January 4, 5 and 17.

Any additional school closures will impact Spring Break. One additional emergency school closure will require attendance on April 5 and a second emergency closure will require students and staff to come to school on April 6.

School delays or closures greatly impact students, families and staff. The decision to delay or close schools is based on safety and a variety of other factors, including National Weather Service reports, recommendations from PGCPS transportation supervisors and building maintenance directors, who survey conditions throughout the county as early as 3 a.m. Facility staff report on power outages, HVAC/heat issues and any plumbing issues that could impact schools and offices. PGCPS executive staff members communicate with County government agencies. The school system’s top consideration is safety for buses, motorists and students who walk to school.

By 4:30 a.m., the Chief Operating Officer recommends a delay or closure and provides additional information to support the recommendation to Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Kevin M. Maxwell, who makes a final decision.

RENEWING APPEAL - DISMISSAL PROCEDURE
CMIT South will like to remind our families to pick students up on school property during dismissal. Our neighbors continue to express displeasure with the students' unruly behavior as they walk off CMIT South to meet their parents. Even more important, student safety is being jeopardized everyday the students walk off school property.

CMIT South is asking parents not to lead our scholars to do wrong such as encourage them to trespass on our neighbors' properties and as they do so, vandalize their property. Please help CMIT South so that the school does not become a nuisance to its neighbors.
