GENERAL NEWS
CMIT South Annual STEM/MAKER FAIR
CMIT South welcomed over 50 judges today to help in judging our scholars' STEM and Maker projects. The scholars were excited to share their innovative ideas and inventions with the judges. The judges were highly impressed with the students' depth of knowledge of their project, in addition to the pride and confidence with which they presented them.

We at CMIT South are proud of the scholars' hard work, creativity and the determination to come up with new ideas to help advance several studies or solve a problem. We are grateful to the judges who showed up today to support our scholars. We are grateful to the parents who continuously support our scholars as we continue the push toward greatness. We are grateful to all staff members who supported the students' efforts, especially all Science and Reading teachers.

Middle School Basketball: The Next Play
Education is not filling the pail, its lighting the fire.--William Butler Yeats

During this basketball season, the players were provided with the drills and skills to fill their pails and they applied the knowledge to ignite a fiery blaze on the basketball court, defeating every opponent. In the end, they were defeated in the first playoff game, giving meaning to the phrase "after ease, comes difficulty."

Although the players left the court teary-eyed, heads bowed; they left learning a life-long lesson. In life, we will encounter defeat but we must muster the courage to simply dust ourselves off and focus on the next play.

To all the players, especially the 8th graders, as this is their last year in middle school, thank you for leaving a light for the others to follow. To the parents, thank you for providing the sparks of encouragement from the sidelines. And to the coaches, thank you for your commitment to increasing the flames of confidence through demonstrated success.

Congratulations on a job well-done!

Umoja Girls Career/College Goal setting
Umoja girls received a special presentation from our very own Ms. MacAllister, who is a guru bullet journalist! Today we stepped it with our goal setting. The girls participated in a College/Career Assessment and received pointers from Ms. MacAllister on how to set up their goal journal using bullet journaling.

Next steps... the girls will create another goal poster using the results of their assessment and the information on bullet journaling. "Plan the work and work the plan."

Thank Ms. MacAllister for taking the time to share.

CMIT-South Families,

Camp Kesem University of Maryland will offer its first ever camp in summer 2018, open to at least 30 campers from throughout the area. Our camp is offered free of charge, and is open to any 6-18 year old who has, or has had, a parent or primary caregiver with cancer.

Camp Kesem University Maryland is one of over 100 active Camp Kesem chapters throughout the United States, and the program is staffed by student volunteers from University of Maryland. As a national non-profit organization, Camp Kesem has over 15 years of experience bringing top quality programs that have a significant impact on children and families. The camps are designed to allow children the opportunity to find support, have fun, and feel safe, loved, and respected.

As everyone gears up for summer 2018, the staff would love to work with you to bring Camp Kesem to families in the area. With this being Camp Kesem University of Maryland's first year, they are trying to reach as many families as they can to give the children in the area a unique, and inspiring experience. High School Physics
Hi all!
I just wanted to show off some of the work the students completed this year. We have since moved on from energy and power to thermodynamics but I have attached pictures of their work.

Students planned and built roller coasters to demonstrate an understanding of energy, power, and work in physics.

These students have done some stellar work and this is to acknowledge their hard work and achievements!

High School Biology - Wassam
Since I submitted a shout-out to the physics class, I also wanted to do the same for the Biology classes. We recently finished our Unit on Ecology and some students submitted recycling posters to be hung in the room/school.

I have attached some pictures of these to this post to show their hard work, creativity and understanding of the importance to save our planet.

Keep up the good work!
