GENERAL NEWS
FIRST QUARTER HONOR ROLL
CMIT South is proud of all the Scholars who earned 3.0 GPA or above to be honored during the assemblies this week. Approximately 57% of all students earned this honor. This is a tribute to their hard work and dedications to scholarly pursuit. In addition Scholars of the Month for the months of September and October were also recognized. While these students may not have made Honor roll, their exemplary conduct and scholarly pursuit is commendable. Keep up the great work everyone.

Information Technology Early College Program (ITEC)

The Information Technology Early College program, also known as ITEC, refers to a dual enrollment program jointly offered through Prince George's Community College (PGCC) and Chesapeake Math and IT Academy South (CMIT South). This is a grant-funded program that responds to the identified need to increase opportunities for high school students to earn college credits and/or industry certifications in STEM fields. By offering dual enrollment courses, academic and career counseling, and professional development all supported by an innovative Virtual Learning Lab, students entering the ninth grade have an opportunity to graduate with an associate degree in information technology upon graduation from high school.

The mission of this early college project is to transform students' lives by providing them with innovative, rigorous learning, training, and career experiences that meet and exceed industry standards.

Enrollment & Participation

1.Who is eligible to participate in the ITEC program?
Enrollment is limited to rising CMIT-South 9th grade students who have achieved the required Accuplacer score and met other selection criteria.

2.How do students apply?
CMIT students are eligible to apply toward the end of their 8th grade year.

3.Is there a limit to the number of students that can enroll each year?
Yes. Enrollment is capped at 22 students per cohort in order to optimize the learning experience for students.

4.Can students enter the program after the ninth grade?
No. However, students not enrolled in the ITEC program who wish to earn college credit are encouraged to consider taking AP courses offered at CMIT.

5.What if students would like to earn college credit but are not interested in information technology?
If this is the case, the ITEC program is not a good fit. This program is rigorous and immerses students heavily in the study of information technology. Students with no interest in information technology should consider earning college credit through AP courses or PGCPS's dual enrollment program.

6.Does participation in ITEC limit student's participation in CMIT activities?
It can. With the exception of state- and county-mandated testing, ITEC activities generally take precedent over CMIT activities. On occasion, there will be assemblies and field trips that ITEC students are unable to attend because of ITEC courses. Conversely, there will occasionally be ITEC activities and field trips that are exclusive to students participating in the program.

TERP YOUNG SCHOLARS - UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND

Terp Scholars enroll in one three-credit course that is at the cutting-edge of theory, thought, and technology. Courses feature field trips or guest speakers designed to broaden understanding of the field through career discovery. Outside of class, students should expect to spend several hours a day on course-related assignments.

Classes meet every day, Monday-Friday, with meeting times varying according to the specific course. Both credit and grade earned post to the UMD transcript and become part of the student record. The course may not be taken pass-fail or audit.

Courses are offered in a broad range of academic disciplines from UMD’s Colleges and Schools. Students should expect to purchase books, class packets, or classroom supplies. Each course description features a link to the sample syllabus that lists specific requirements for that course.

On the application, you’ll be asked to make a second choice in the event the first selection has filled. Course selection is processed on a first-come, first serve basis when the complete application packet has been received.

Students must attend the program in its entirety. Students are not permitted to miss class time, including arriving late and/or leaving early. "I am strong, I am smart, I am beautiful, I am talent! "
The CLP Girls Mentoring Club session today focus on "Yoga!" Today the girls participated in a Yoga session lead by Ms. Courtenay Smith Brown, owner and operator of Shabach Yoga, located in Waldorf Maryland. "I am strong, I am smart, I am beautiful, I am talent" was today's mantra. She started by having the young ladies introduce themselves and provide their prior knowledge of yoga. Many shared yoga helps with stress. Today's teens are stressed more than we will ever know, in the areas of peer pressure, academics, personal and more. Courtenay provide a quick history of yoga and explain that yoga can be for everyone.

The yoga session was about 1-hour. This session will go towards the physical fitness hours towards their physicial fitness goal.

"I am, strong, I am smart, I am beautiful, I am talent" "Namaste!"

We all had fun and felt better after our session. Thank you Courtenay.
