Information Technology Early College Program (ITEC)

The Information Technology Early College program, also known as ITEC, refers to a dual enrollment program jointly offered through Prince George's Community College (PGCC) and Chesapeake Math and IT Academy South (CMIT South). This is a grant-funded program that responds to the identified need to increase opportunities for high school students to earn college credits and/or industry certifications in STEM fields. By offering dual enrollment courses, academic and career counseling, and professional development all supported by an innovative Virtual Learning Lab, students entering the ninth grade have an opportunity to graduate with an associate degree in information technology upon graduation from high school.

The mission of this early college project is to transform students' lives by providing them with innovative, rigorous learning, training, and career experiences that meet and exceed industry standards.

Enrollment & Participation

1.Who is eligible to participate in the ITEC program?
Enrollment is limited to rising CMIT-South 9th grade students who have achieved the required Accuplacer score and met other selection criteria.

2.How do students apply?
CMIT students are eligible to apply toward the end of their 8th grade year.

3.Is there a limit to the number of students that can enroll each year?
Yes. Enrollment is capped at 22 students per cohort in order to optimize the learning experience for students.

4.Can students enter the program after the ninth grade?
No. However, students not enrolled in the ITEC program who wish to earn college credit are encouraged to consider taking AP courses offered at CMIT.

5.What if students would like to earn college credit but are not interested in information technology?
If this is the case, the ITEC program is not a good fit. This program is rigorous and immerses students heavily in the study of information technology. Students with no interest in information technology should consider earning college credit through AP courses or PGCPS's dual enrollment program.

6.Does participation in ITEC limit student's participation in CMIT activities?
It can. With the exception of state- and county-mandated testing, ITEC activities generally take precedent over CMIT activities. On occasion, there will be assemblies and field trips that ITEC students are unable to attend because of ITEC courses. Conversely, there will occasionally be ITEC activities and field trips that are exclusive to students participating in the program.

For more information about ITEC program please visit:

STEM and Maker Judges Needed!
CMIT Family,

CMIT South STEM Fair and Maker Faire competitions are coming up in less than two months (January 12).

In order to fairly judge our students' projects we need as many judges as possible. All that is required is some level of college or work in a STEM field.

The single student who recruits the most judges will receive an easy-to-fly, live camera feed, quadcopter DRONE!

Simply send this form to as many people as you can that meet our criteria:
https://goo.gl/forms/ipMLwmyNglGzxes03

Make sure your judge recruits mention your name!

The more judges we have the more each project gets judged. This will result in a much more fair competition.

Best!

Immunization information & Health Screenings
Happy Friday CMIT South - Staff, Parents and Scholars! If you received a letter in the mail informing you that your child's immunizations are either delinquent or not on file, please note that the student will be excluded from class as of the DECEMBER 6, 2017, and, until the immunizations are up to date OR provided documentation to satisfy COMAR 10.06.04.03 (see attached). I know that this is a busy time of year. However, please be sure to check in with your physician if you received a letter from us as the state requirements can vary from the last time your child received a physical. I have attached a copy of the 2017-2018 vaccine requirements. Feel free to call me with questions or concerns. If you cannot secure an appointment with your child's pediatrician prior to the above listed date, please call your local health department. They can most likely provide an appointment for vaccines.

Finally, Please note that on December 7, 2017 I will be conducting vision, hearing and Body Mass Index screenings on all 8th graders and any student new to Prince Georges County Public School System as this is a state requirement. Results (pass or fail) will be sent home with your child. Please follow up with your child's pediatrician as needed.

American Red Cross Blood Drive @ CMIT South

Greetings CMIT-South Family!

Thank you to those staff members and families who have committed to our American Red Cross Blood Drive! We need a minimum of 40 registrants in order to hold our drive and we are just over one-fifth of the way to our goal! If you have not signed up and you're interested in saving a life through this precious giving, please sign-up via the GoogleForm below. Even if you think you might have second thoughts the day of the drive, we need you to register today!

Please read below for more information on how giving blood saves lives. Thank you!

Did you know?
Every two seconds someone needs blood.
One donation may help save or sustain 3 lives.
A single car accident victim can require as much as 100 pints of blood.

Local patients depend on the blood supply every day. There is no substitute for human blood and the only source of obtaining life-saving blood is through volunteer blood donations. Trauma victims, cancer patients, premature infants and others depend on their neighbors to roll up their sleeves and give the gift of life.

Here is a link to an American Red Cross recipient’s story:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZPlnPIRyCE

Brian lost 60% of his blood. He required 36 blood transfusions and 13 plasma treatments, which he received from Red Cross donors.
If you have an eligibility question, please call 1-866- 236-3276.

Please click on the link below to show your support and donate the gift of life.

UMOJA "Stay READY, so you don't have to get ready."

Today Umoja Girl's Mentoring Club was led by Ms. Shelva Nobles. Ms. Nobles is a product of PGCPS. A graduate of Hampton University and a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Ms. Noble has a passion for giving back to the young people of today, especially young ladies. She encouraged the ladies of Umoja to "Stay READY, so they don't have to get ready." Ms. Nobles asked each young lady what they wanted to do at present or in the near future. Then she expressed the importance of planning to ensure they are ready, be it a test, a job interview, presentation, applying for college etc.

Thank you Ms. Nobles for sharing your time with the ladies of Umoja! You are "fabulous!"
