First Week of School for 6th Grade Students
|
September 6, 2017 is the first day for all 6th grade students.
Students will have received their schedules on the September 5, 2017 during orientation. Students are expected to report to the multi-purpose room/cafeteria upon arrival. Staff members will be in the hallways to direct the students. After the breakfast, students will be picked up by their homeroom teachers and they will report to class.
After the new students complete their pre-assessment during the first week of the school year, CMIT South administration will analyze students’ data and place the new students in appropriate curricula. On September 11, 2017, all 6th grade students will be placed in their student groups and new schedules will be provided to them.
The following criteria will be utilized to determine your child's curriculum: -- MSA/PARCC or other standardized test scores from previous years, -- Report card from the previous grade, -- Course history in elementary school (e.g. any advanced or Honors courses), -- TAG (gifted & talented program at PGCPS) status, -- Data results from the pre-assessment taken during the first week of the school year/May-August 2017
The procedure for placements during the first week of the new school year prior to pre-assessment, September 6 - 8 is as follows:
-- All 6th grade students coming to CMIT South will be temporarily assigned to student groups based on alphabetical order. -- Students will go through orientations and take pre-assessments. -- CMIT administration will review the pre-assessment data along with data from all the other items listed above to schedule students based on their assigned curriculum -- After September 8, students will receive their actual schedule.
The analysis of all pre-assessment data along with the criteria mentioned will ensure your child receives their customized curricula based on their assessed areas of strengths and growth.
Students are asked to bring a notebook, pencils, pens, an eraser, and a sharpener. No backbags until lockers are distributed. Expected donations include but not limited to hand sanitizer bottles, tissue boxes, paper towels, etc.

GET INVOLVED! JOIN A COMMITTEE!
|
Chesapeake Lighthouse Foundation (CLF) is working to get our family of schools at work here in Maryland. There is a need for more engagement within the family. By the community leveraging the Local Motive through the submission of articles, accomplishments, photos, etc, we can generate more excitement this year. Families, students and staff are encouraged to get published. CLF would love to broadcast your accomplishments to a wider audience.
Parents are also encouraged to join CLF's new committees that will branch and support all CLF schools with group-based, PTO involved projects. Please see publication picture. We'll all have more to celebrate simultaneously and likely tackle bigger obstacles too. Let’s make CLF a central hub of involvement.
As a reminder, these three committees are ADULTS ONLY. Any CLF schools' Admin, Staff, Parents, Teachers, or Alumni can participate.

GIRLS BREAKING DOWN STEM DOORS
|
My name is Felicia Johnson, Founder of the community outreach organization "Ready, Set, Help". Our mission is to initiate and support projects in local communities that help combat homelessness, empower the youth, and rebuild neighborhoods. We have completed several projects over the year, and now we're planning a STEM event for 6-10th grade girls on October 7, 2017 at Chesapeake Math and IT Academy in Upper Marlboro, MD. The Girls Kicking Down the STEM Door event will be a day of fun and challenging hands-on exercises in each STEM discipline that will be led by STEM women. The girls will rotate through two sessions in the morning, have lunch with a dynamic guest speaker, and two additional sessions in the afternoon. It's going to be a great day and opportunity for them to so see how amazing and diverse STEM women are. We would love to have you come lead or co-lead a session. The sessions will be 30-45 minutes long and geared toward either middle or high school age students. During the session, you will lead them through an exercise (we can brainstorm ideas), and talk with them about your career path and education. We want to shower these girls with positive women who work in an amazing and underrepresented career field. I’ve attached an overview of “Ready, Set, Help” and a volunteer flyer for more information. I believe this event will encourage and empower girls to pursue a STEM career, and I hope you all can make it! Thank you in advance for your support and I look forward to working with you!

SCHEDULES FOR SY18
|
CMIT South staff have been working diligently all summer to ensure that schedules are ready for returning students. Our goal is to have all schedules ready to pass out to students on September 6, 2017. Some consideration for scheduling includes a reorganization of the college compositions across similar curriculums. This means your scholar's college may not be same as the previous school year. Schedules will be distributed to returning students on September 6, 2017. Please look for scholars to bring their schedules home.

CMIT South 2017-18 Academic Calendar
|
CMIT South follows PGCPS calendar. Parents are encouraged to register for text or email alerts for school closings and emergencies by filling out the online form on PGCPS website: https://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/PGCPS/subscriber/new?qsp=PGCPS_9Students and parents are asked not to schedule any vacations or trips to coincide with school days for the 2017-18 school year. Maryland state law requires that all students between the ages of 5-16 attend school regularly. Absences from and tardies to school is disruptive to the learning process. Studies have shown that students who attend school on a regular basis earn better grades and learn more than those who are frequently absent. Students will earn incentives for Perfect Attendance. Please note that June 14, 2018 and June 15, 2018 are assigned as inclement weather make-up days and students may be required to attend school on those days, depending on the weather conditions throughout the Winter. Please do not any family vacations until after June 16, 2018. Parents and students are asked to visit PGCPS website for 2017-18 calendar updates: http://go.activecalendar.com/pgcps/The state of Maryland recognizes the following as lawful (excused) absences from school: -Death in the immediate family -Illness of the student -Quarantine -Court summons -Principal-approved activity -Mental or physical incapacity -Violent storms -Observance of a religious holiday -State of emergency

Traffic Pattern for 2017-18SY
|
CMIT South in collaboration with a committee comprised of parents, came up with a new traffic pattern to ease the congestions experienced during the drop off and pick up hour. This new pattern was tested during the last few weeks of the SY17. Feedback from parents was positive in regards to this pattern. CMIT South will continue with this pattern this year.
Our efforts are to make drop off and pick up easier for all. To this end, we ask for the community's full cooperation with staff and volunteers who are outside helping. Please do not instruct students to leave the designated pick up location in the afternoon. All students must remain in front of the exit doors where the canopy is located. Please note that the school will not accept any responsibility if students do not follow the expected procedures and parents are not redirecting their students to stay where the students are expected to be.
Before and after school enrichment entrance will remain the same – Cafeteria entrance. This traffic pattern applies only from 7:15 am to 3:10 pm.
