GENERAL NEWS
Honor Roll Ceremony
CMIT South celebrated achievement of more than 270 students who were listed as Honor Roll students for the 2nd quarter. Parents were present to witness the achievement of their students.

Closing remarks came from our very dedicated School Counselor Ms. Warehime. She reminded the importance of keeping high GPA and also suggested students to take time off of electronic devices to play, get social with friends, and have a balanced school-family life.

Scholars of the month and the students with perfect attendance were also recognized.

Congratulations.

Weed Warrior Work Days

March 25th, 2017, 9:00am – 12:00 p.m. (Major Lansdale Park)

May 6th, 2017, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (Whitemarsh Park)

June 10th, 2017, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (Whitemarsh Park)

www.cityofbowie.org/weedwarriors

The City of Bowie’s Green Team is in need of volunteers to help remove English ivy from Whitemarsh Park. As an invasive, non-native plant, English ivy spreads quickly and easily, and is very destructive to native ecosystems. This is an outdoor activity that requires cutting the ivy vines at eye-level and foot-level, then pulling them back about two feet from the base of the tree to bag them. To participate, please register by contacting Kristin Larson (klarson@cityofbowie.org, 301-809-3044). This is a great Student Service Learning opportunity. Children age 14 and younger must be under the direct supervision of a parent/guardian or Troop Leader at all times, and no volunteers under age 16 can use tools but may participate by pulling and bagging vines. Tiffany Wright (Watershed Manager for the City of Bowie) or Kristin Larson (Sustainability Planner for the City of Bowie) will sign off on service learning hours for students at the event.

Stream Cleanup

Various Locations Around Bowie

April 1st, 9:00 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The City will hold its annual Stream Cleanup on Saturday, April 1, 2016, from 9 a.m. to noon, rain or shine (unless there is lightning). Stream teams walk along select streams across the City and pick up trash and litter that would otherwise wash down to the Patuxent River and head towards the Chesapeake Bay. Cleanup days are a great time for Bowie residents and their families to get out into the environment and experience nature while working to protect Bowie's water resources. We will provide all necessary supplies. You just need to have sturdy shoes or boots, long sleeves, water, and fun! Eligible students will earn Student Service Learning (SSL) hours, and Scouts will receive a Green Bowie patch or year bar. To nominate a stream for cleaning or to register for the cleanup, contact Tiffany Wright at twright@cityofbowie.org or 301-809-3043

Community Seed Swap for Home, Community and School Gardeners.

Student volunteers can receive community service hours. If you are a student 16 years or older and would like to volunteer to help with the seed swap, please let us know. Bring your volunteer documentation form with you when you report.

Event to be held at the following time, date, and location:

Saturday, April 15, 2017 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM (EDT)

Watkins Nature Center @ Watkins Regional Park
301 Watkins Park Dr
Upper Marlboro, MD 20774

On Saturday, May 6th, our community holds it's annual "Berwyn Heights Day" celebration.
Through out the day we have activities, including a fun run, pancake breakfast, a parade, rides, games, refreshment and ticket sales.

We will need volunteers throughout the day to help us manage all of this. Teens can fill some of their community service hours, and hopefully have some fun at the same time. We can also offer them some free food tickets, and possibly some free ride and game tickets.

At our next Rec Council meeting, we will be compiling our specific needs for volunteers, but in the meantime, if you can spread the word, we would greatly appreciate it.

For any questions, or offers to volunteer, they can contact me, Susan Jones at violindreams@verizon.net

ANNOUNCEMENTS & REMINDERS
CMIT South Girls and Boys Rugby!

Practices start March 29th!

I am very excited to announce that CMIT south will be joining Washington DC's Youth Rugby league through Play Rugby USA this Spring!

Both girls and boys in grades 6-8 are eligible to play, no prior experience needed. This program will establish students within the sport in a safe, non contact flag rules environment.

Below is a link to a recent Washington Post article about our program.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/for-inner-city-youth-theres-a-new-game-in-town-rugby/2016/07/28/606083dc-538a-11e6-b7de-dfe509430c39_story.html

Students who commit to the team will be able to compete against other teams at a major tournament in May 2017.

If students are interested in continuing play in high school, Ms. Fay can help facilitate placement on a full contact rugby team in the area for grades 9-12 (for both men and women!)

Students must possess and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA in order to participate in Interscholastic Athletics. Also, remember all students are required to have a signed parent permission slip and signed medical physical evaluation form to be completed by a Licensed Physician before they may participate in any school sponsored interscholastic athletic activity.

If you are interested, have any further questions, or need more information, please contact Ms. Fay directly (kfay@cmitsouth.org), or drop your e-mail address into the link below, and I will contact you!
