PSAT 8/9
|
The Practice SAT (PSAT 8/9) for 8th grade students will be given the morning of December 5, 2018. This test comes from College Board and provides indicators in many areas.
PSAT 8/9 is used for:
1. Acceptance into PGCPS Specialty High School Programs (Science and Tech, Aerospace Engineering, etc.)
2. Provides areas of strengths and growths for which to improve in an effort to be prepared for the SATs.
3. PSAT 8/9 is also a predictor of success in High School Honors Courses and AP courses at CMIT High School, and is one piece of data used for placement (amongst others).
CMIT North Middle School prepares students for the PSAT 8/9 through the standard curriculum and does not stop to prepare solely for the test.
Parents are encouraged to utilize the following resources in their spare time to practice and prepare.

8th Grade Trip to JA Finance Park
|
The 8th graders are scheduled to attend JA Finance Park on January 7th and January 8th. It is never too early to start planning! Students will receive their permission slips in November which will indicate which date they are scheduled to attend. We will need at least 20 parent and community volunteers each day to make this trip success for our students.
Students will begin the finance park curriculum in their social studies and math classes in December and will continue until they visit Finance Park.
If you are interested in learning more about the Finance Park curriculum, click on this link: https://www.myja.org/financepark/
PLEASE NOTE: Parents and other volunteers do not need to have their fingerprints on file with PGCPS in order to volunteer at Finance Park. Parents and volunteers will transport themselves to the site an hour before students to receive training.
If you are interested in learning more about volunteering, please view the attachment below.
If you are interested in volunteering on the day that your student is attending Finance Park, fill out this survey: https://goo.gl/forms/Ccps2Mm3UpR9ar3u2
If you know a community member that would be interested in volunteering for this activity, have them fill out this survey: https://goo.gl/forms/iyi0BfuA2IxOpGZi1

MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE OLYMPIAD
|
The Science Olympiad competition is like an academic track meet, consisting of a series of 23 events spread over different divisions, ( e.g. Middle School is competing at Div. B). Each year, a portion of the events are updated to reflect the ever-changing nature of earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering and technology. By combining events from all disciplines, the Science Olympiad encourages a wide cross-section of students to get involved. The emphasis is placed on active, hands-on group participation. A core value of the Science Olympiad is to get students, teachers, parents, principals, and business leaders to work toward a shared goal.
Regional and State competitions are held at universities. This gives students the opportunity to visit and tour colleges they might consider for their undergraduate studies and provides a memorable experience that will last a lifetime.
The mission of Science Olympiad is to provide fun and challenging science, technology, art, engineering, and mathematics (STEAM) competitions that build team skills and highlight the value that diversity brings to a team.
For more information Please visit: www.marylandscienceolympiad.org https://www.soinc.org
Eligibility Criteria:

Mrs. Crespo's Science Class Updates!
|
Mrs. Crespo's students in Life Science class were learning "photosynthesis". To have an understanding about the lesson, students learned to test a green and non-green part of a leaf for starch. A positive test for starch in a leaf provides evidence that photosynthesis has occurred. The test for starch in a leaf is an extension of the Iodine Test for Starch where the depigmented leaf will turn bluish black. Glucose is the product of photosynthesis, and is rapidly converted to granules of starch - a polymer of glucose - for storage.
In connection to the STEAM FAIR project, students in life and physical science classes spent time in their science class period writing their project proposal using the standard school form uploaded in their Google classroom. The teacher created an exclusive Google classroom for the STEAM FAIR only where the STEAM Fair student packet and project timeline were uploaded. The project proposal is due on Monday and needs to be submitted in their Google classroom.

THE CENTER OF THE MASS: Balancing Fork & Spoon on Glass With A Toothpick
|
We were studying water, air, oxygen, hydrogen. Amazingly discovering how raindrops formed…how a big heavy thorny lizard can walk on water, how the earth can remain in a constant temperature and how water from plant roots moves up to its stem, branches and leaves – defying gravity.
On Thursday, we took one fork and a spoon with toothpick to perform an amazing balancing act (figure 1). This demonstration aims to teach students the fundamentals about "center of mass" and introduction to the nature of matter. The center of mass is a position defined relative to an object or system of objects. It is the average position of all the parts of the system, weighted according to their masses ( https://www.khanacademy.org/science/physics/linear-momentum/center-of-mass/a/what-is-center-of-mass)
Mass: a coherent, typically large body of matter with no definite shape.
Our scholars were surprised that the utensils remained balanced. Why didn’t the flame keep burning and cause a collapse? Is this surface tension??? But there are no external forces? Is this cohesion, but there was no water?
SPEAK UP Dr. CLARKE!!!
The center of gravity of an object refers to the central location that gravity acts on the object. In this activity, the center of mass is straight down from the spot where the toothpick sits on the rim of the glass (called the pivot point). If you look closely at our balancing utensils, you’ll notice that the handles are curved well below the toothpick. This actually moves the center of gravity directly below the point where the toothpick touches the rim.

Dear CMIT Parents,
We are having a multicultural fest, as we do every school year and are asking for your help. The cultural fest is a student event where they get to show insights on their culture. While our CMIT families are walking through the demonstrations, shows and events, it would be nice for them to have something to eat and/or drink.
We as an athletic department are asking that you kindly donate snacks and drinks for this event. Also, if you have a specific culture you may bring in a home-cooked dish to share in the event.
This will help us raise money for sports programs. If you are interested in supporting athletes in this event, please click the link below and fill out which school you will be supporting and what you would like to donate.

FAQs |
|
Q: Is CMIT North MS a public school?
A: Yes We are a public charter school who is staffed by PGCPS teachers and administration, along with CLF staff. We also benefit from additional guidance, management and financial support from Chesapeake Light House Foundation, whose educational concept this school is based on.
Q: Do siblings get preference in applying to CMIT?
A: The process of gaining entry to any charter school in Prince George's County is through a lottery. However, siblings of already attending CMIT students are weighted differently during the lottery process. This different weighting gives preference to siblings.
Q: What makes CMIT different then any other school in the district?
A: Although we are a PGCPS public charter, we are given some autonomy over curriculum. This autonomy allows us to fast track students, who are academically ready, through selected high school courses in math, foreign language and technology. It is that fast tracking that opens up opportunity to more advanced coursework on the college level while still in high school. Additionally, we offer students supports and enrichments to every student, not available at most schools.
Q: Do you offer everything the big middle and high schools offer?
A: Unlike many school in Maryland, we do not have a full spectrum offerings in sports. Instead, our focus is on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics). Therefore, our sports offerings are more limited. We offer, boys and girls soccer, basketball, boy's softball, boy's baseball, boys and girls track/field at the high school. With that said we recently (2017) won the girls county basketball championship and made it to the playoffs in soccer. Our High school recently opened a multi-million dollar, state of the art gym complex. The middle school has also added an indoor gym space. Lastly, we do offer special educational services, but becuase we are a school of choice, the amount of service hours we can provide is limited to 7.5 hours a week. Services hours are delivered by special education teachers but are limited to literacy and math courses.
